Subject: Do the 2010s seem futuristic to you?

Written By: Mat1991 on 12/21/10 at 2:13 am

Whenever I ponder over the upcoming years of the '10s, it always seems so "futuristic", in a sense, to me. Like when I think of the year 2015, it just has a futuristic ring to it.

To be fair, though, I remember when I started junior high in 2004, and learning that I was expected to graduate from high school in 2010. The year 2010 seemed so far off to me at the time that I didn't give it much thought; and now that's it's almost 2011, and I've been out of high school for six months and have completed my first semester of college, it all just seems natural to me.

And yet I still can't help but get "futuristic" vibes whenever I think of the 2010s. I guess we all feel that way at the beginning of any decade.

There may not be flying cars and hoverboards by the end of this decade, but if you were to show someone back in 2004 an iPad, Amazon Kindle, or even smart phones they might think its futuristic. I think the major technological milestone will be green technologies, such as EVs (electric vehicles).

So far the music seems futuristic, some of the fashions(Lady Gaga inspired) also seem that way. Something like the ipad would blow people's minds away in like 1995 ;D.

And to think 30 years ago we had Atari and Intellivision to play with.

What I meant was popular music is very "techno-ish" now, I'm guessing that is the sound many people think of when they think about the future(everything being electronic based).

At least me, yes it did, because of all the heavy electronic synths and drum machines being used at the time.

Mat1991, yes I think our society is starting to look futuristic. I think by 2030 it'll be even more obvious, right now it's kinda subtle. But overall I'd say yes, the 2010s does seem futuristic to me.

In 2011, flying cars will be available for people to buy. But I don't think we'll see most people with a flying car until about 2090 or so.

The 80s were the most futuristic of the classic decades with all the synths, neon lights, colors, technology (computers started going mainstream). Just look the robot in Rocky IV and you'll know what I mean.
The 90's looked retro and hippie, not that futuristic.
So the late 00s/early 10s looks very like the 80s in terms of futuristic.

I agree too. I mean seriously the only things I've noticed futuristic about the 2010's so far is touch screen devices, internet TV, and pretty much just things like that. Its just technology we've had for years now being updated with new technology.. As for flying cars, I HIGHLY doubt they're gonna catch on. I mean think about it. First off they're probably going to be VERY expensive, they're probably going to have really ugly designs, and probably extremely difficult to drive. I agree with what you guys said about it being like the 80s in terms of futuristic. But like I said above, its mainly just like touch screen phones, computers, and internet TV making it feel futuristic. Its not really that big of a deal. :P Its the same stuff we've been using for YEARS and like I said above just updated with new technology.

It's only been one year in the decade, we've got nine more to go. In fact, are you old enough to remember a world without the internet, it was quite different.

The 90's had sort of a dark, sleek, more "minimalist" futuristic vibe too, compared to the bright, neon 80's. The early 10's(so far) have a ravey, techno club futuristic vibe.

The Automat was actually obsolete by the time the Jetsons aired.  It was more "retro" than avant-garde.

On the other hand, this cover of a computer magazine in 1978 should look oddly familiar to anyone who's ever used a microSD card.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VjiB9NmK-4

And this piece by Doris Norton, also from 1978, should sound pretty prescient.  Doris Norton grokked electronica in its fullness, some 20-30 years ahead of her time, and she did it all with an 8-bit, 1-MHz (yes, one megahertz, one one-thousandth-of-a-gigahertz) Apple ][ computer.  The equipment depicted on the album cover was the setup she used to compose and perform her work.

That would be great but the problem would be on how long that food was sitting there,it might not be fresh,I understand pies, cookies and small cakes but to have a Frankfurter or a hamburger sitting there in that warm oven might not be fresh and taste good.

Ah, there's nothing like a frankfurther that's been slow-cooking all day on one of those convenience-store hot dog racks that slowly rolls them back and forth.  Yum.  :P

I know a lot of you don't understand what I'm trying to say when I say the 2010's is kinda futuristic.

But think of it this way; internet, personal computers, everybody having a cell phone, dvd's. All those things may seem 'normal' to us. But to people 50 or 60 years before we're pretty advanced and if a person from 1950 came here, they'd think we're pretty futuristic.

Sure we're not like the Jetsons yet and nobody but a rich person can afford a flying car, but all these small technological steps since the mid-90's is a sign of where we're headed. Maybe we haven't reached the futuristic look as soon as we thought we would, but it doesn't mean it's impossible. It is, it just might take some time.

And if we went back to the 1950's,there'd be all those Black And White TV's and payphones with rotary dials.

When I step back and really think about it, the 2010s seem WAY futuristic. The coolest thing for me is that I have a PS3, and I got Gran Turismo 5 a few weeks back and I love being able to race people online. That's the kind of thing I'd been waiting 20 years for.

Plus I really dig watching football in hi-def, and being able to call and text my friends from anywhere.

On the other hand, I like the fact that there is still no shortage of places I can go that still look and feel the same as they did 30 years ago (and most likely long before that), and those are the things I really appreciate.

Doesn't seem too futuristic to me. Than again, I was born in the 90s so its only my third decade so far. Biggest change for me personally is going from a Nintendo 64 to an Xbox 360  :). Guess that goes for all late Gen Yers/Gen Zers or whatever the hell I am.

It's all relative I think, back in the day in the '90s using the internet for the first time as a kid was futuristic, I remember my parents got Satellite TV for Christmas back in '96 that was so futuristic back then with the interactive on screen guides and hundreds of channels, this was pretty cutting edge stuff in '96. Ha I remember I used to record new movies off pay per view with my VCR and I thought that was so cool and I was really making out lmao, still have some of those old "direct ticket" recordings today. At the turn of the new millennium burning a cd was a new thing. When my parents bought a new 1994 Escort back in '94 it seemed really futuristic, and now I look back at all this and think how primitive it really seems compared to today. A more recent thing is the first blu-ray player when it first came out back in '06...was $1,000!, now you can get one for like 70-80 bucks. And I'm sure fast forward to 2025 that 2011 is gonna look primitive too.

From the walk-through X-ray scanners from Total Recall, to the cyberwars of Uplink (a game written 10 years ago and pretty much describing the events of 2010 to an uncanny degree), allow me to say this: welcome to the future.

Even in 2007 when I first saw that AT&T video I was already baffled. And a story on Google News today says about how tablets will finally kill off netbooks in 2011 (I just got one for Christmas!) :( I couldn't imagine a post-netbook era in 2006 before the iPhone came out. But I see desktops dying (replaced by Internet TVs) before netbooks do. And one sports channel even shows that annoying textspeak on screen not taking effort to properly spell words once only found away from the TV! :(

Read more religion/spiritual/history books! It's the only way to preserve our values!
