Subject: More International Artists in the North American charts

Written By: whistledog on 01/15/11 at 1:57 pm

Give or take 5 years ago, most of the music that was in the US and Canadian Hot 100 chart was a majority of American (or Canadian) artists, but it's nice to see a wider range of International artists making waves over here

The big one in Canada is Edward Maya from Romania who is currently at 46 consecutive weeks in the chart with 'Stereo Love'

French DJ David Guetta has also made quite a splash in North America, but mostly through collaborations with known artists like Flo Rida (Club Can't Handle Me), Rihanna (Who's That Chick) and Kelly Rowland (When Love Takes Over / Commander)

British giant Taio Cruz had 2 #1s with 'Break Your Heart' and 'Dynamite'

I agree, if the 00's pop culture was urban-centric, the early 10's pop culture is very euro-centric. I would have never thought electro-house would ever achieve this level of popularity in the US. I hope the mediterranean style music of "Stereo Love" becomes more popular in the US.

I wish that Dutch Indonesian rocker Taco would record another hit for the American market.

I highly doube he will.  He remained a one hitter in the States with Puttin' on the Ritz.  The extent of his success in North America continued in Canada with a Top 50 cover of 'Singin' in the Rain', but he was never heard of this side of the Atlantic again.

I am surprised 'Who's That Chick' never made the Top 40 in the States.  It's a (loosely based) updated version of 'Who's That Girl' by Madonna, and the US is one of three charted locations (Japan and the Czech Republic, the other two) where it has not seen a Top 40 placing.  It could still become a sleeper hit in the US.

2010 was an excellent year for both Guetta and Rihanna, helping prove that there will always be a place for International Artists in the North American chart.

I agree with you, Jason. Taco is now 55 years old. Though it's not impossible for him to record another hit, it's highly unlikely.

If a Taco song did make an appearance in the charts, it would probably be on the dance charts with an Oakenfold remix or something like that lol

With International Artists in the charts, is it the same for the International countries themselves?  To Europe and the rest of the world, is North America considered International?

Quite a few Canadian artists saw BIG success in the UK and many parts of Europe ...

- Justin Bieber had 4 UK Top 40 hits in 2010.
- Drake currently holds the #1 spot in the UK with the Rihanna collaboration 'What's My Name'
- The Canadian-American duo of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden took a big nosed legend and made her a hit in a stylish new way:  'Barbara Streisand' by Duck Sauce peaked at UK #3
- Dragonette recently debuted in the UK chart at #29 with their collaboration with French DJ Martin Solveig on the fantastic single 'Hello'
- K'Naan took 'Wavin' Flag' to #2 in the UK

I won't be surprised that Yo-Yo Ma may have a Top-40 hit, or Pink Lady might.

There may be some new acts from the Far East that may have Top-40 hits soon....

I think Puttin On The Ritz was his only #1 hit.

Rihanna doing a near re-creation of a Madonna song doesn't surprise me.

Yeah musical artists having a comeback isn't likely nowadays. That stopped happening when the glam rap era started in 2003. Although Mariah Carey and Green Day did have comebacks in mid 2005.

Rihanna has become like an institution in the US. I mean she's having a musical run since her debut in August of 2005 like Madonna(80's and 90's.), Michael Jackson(80's-mid 90's), and Mariah Carey(1990-1997/1998.)

I don't see whats so great about her, she seems like another cookie cutter pop princess type but then again thats not really my style of music.

Yeah her songs are just catchy and the top 40 radio audience just eat her songs up. Don;t get me wrong I like a few songs by her but not her whole catolog like the top 40 radio or legal download listeners like her music catalog.

Why did Rihanna do a remake? She didn't have to do that!  ::)

Its just a fad.
The United States are in downfall at the moment, and this reflects to the american culture as a whole.
I hope true badass macho American sounding music will retrurn in about 2012.

Creeder, I hope so! I haven't liked the radio since 1998!

UK Rap Artist Tinie Tempah has now scored his first chat appearance in Mainstream North America.  His collaboration with Swedish House Mafia on the hit 'Miami 2 Ibiza' has entered the Canadian chart at #92.  The song was hit #1 on the US Dance/Club chart, but has failed to see the US Hot 100

Jessie J is taking off in the USA with "Price Tag" and Tinie Tempah with "Written In The Stars". I've been hearing both of those on the radio.

Ed Sheeran, Cher Lloyd and Emeli Sande have debuted in the Canadian Hot 100.  I honestly never expected them to breakout in North America.  I love Cher Lloyd, her album is fantastic!
