Subject: Based on past and present trends, what do you think 2017 will be like?

Written By: youngerderek on 04/21/11 at 7:51 am

I've said several times here, I can't imagine the pop culture being markedly different from the pop culture of 2010-2011. I just think that because of the fragmentation of the media due to the Internet, it's not longer possible for a full-on 'feeling of the times' to infect everything like it was in the 60s, 70s and 80s (and to a smaller degree the '90s), which were so dated to their time they almost seem like parallel universes LOL.  ;D

2017 will likely either be more of the same kind of garbage we have now, or there won't really be a mainstream media at all anymore, IMO.

TBH we will probably have to wait until the mid-2020s or so to experience a pop culture that doesn't strong resemble 2009 probably  :(

Does this mean we will have a full decade of electropop and autotune?

hmm lets see, in 2017 'll be 26. Still young enough to be "up to date" with pop cultre. I hope it won't be garbage, but in the 2020s i'll be in 30s, at that age people usually settle down more. The last time I was "feeling the times" was  when i was about 9-16. After that, things changed. However,  I think pop culture now will probably stay until ATLEAST 2013? Just maybe. I think in 2014 there will be a difference. Like in the 90s, 97-98ish  started to change into pre- millinium. After 2002, culture started to change. So yeah, maybe in 2014 things will change.

While I was thinking about this, comparing 2011 to like 2001, even though there are some stylistic similarities, some of the differences in popular music from 10 years ago till now is jarring, 2001 was a year of R&B style rap music and nu-metal, alot of the music was more laid-back, popular music in 2011 is just about devoid of any rock or slow jams, the music is more harder hitting, it's like the music is heading in a dark, edgy industrial-trance direction. I mean even in 2005 there was still slow jam R&B number one hits(We Belong Together), that event seems highly unlikely to happen in the early 10s though.

I'm starting to hear more pop/electropop songs with a dubstep break in them(Judas by Lady Gaga), that's starting to be one of 2011's trends I think. I think the dance music of the 2010s will be darker, dirtier, and edgier. I have an extremely hard time imagining traditional guitar/drum/bass rock music being dominant(or even moderately popular) as we progress further into the 2010s.

That is kind of how I feel also in regards of today's culture as I am approaching 26 in a week or so.  Don't get me right wrong, I am less judgemental now about newer music than I was when I was 20, but I don't have the same attachment as I had during 1996 when I was getting into music. Yeah, I hope music, particularly rock music, gets better but I am not putting a lot of stocks to it.

the 90s and especially the 2000s both had "feelings of the times", I dont know where you're getting that from.

There will always be a "mainstream" pop culture. Always has been, always will be.

2017 probably will have similarities to 2011 but it'll be quite different. Were 2001 and 2007 alike? sort of, but not totally.

Autotune will definitely not be around in 2017. People are already getting sick of it. Electropop probablly won't be either. Its a fad, soon to be lumped in with disco, boybands, nu metal, crunk and emo-pop.

Sad but true. As much as I love rock, it doesn't really have any new territory to cover. It's all been done already. Its still enjoyable though.

Which grapes were better, the ones from 1997 or the grapes very to be produced in 2012?

Well the ones from 97 made excellent wine in 2012. While the 2012 grapes will be decent wine in 2017.

Well... in 2017 the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan would be long gone and it will be a peaceful time (I hope).
Electropop will have a huge backslash I am sure. Hip-Hop will still be popular, but it will be different from today.
And if we don't get some new sound (not indie) in 2017 post-post-post-post-grunge will still dominate the rock world.

Yeah, tbh it does seem (sadly) tired out. Owl City's new album, as well as Gaga's 'Judas' seem tired out, not fresh like they sounded in 2009. Which is a shame because I saw huge potential for Electropop.

Yeah, tbh it does seem (sadly) tired out. Owl City's new album, as well as Gaga's 'Judas' seem tired out, not fresh like they sounded in 2009. Which is a shame because I saw huge potential for Electropop.

I really liked 2008 and 2009 electropop, but I can't say I really like the current stuff.  It seems to have gone in a darker, more serious direction.  Songs like "S&M" and "Judas" are very different from the carefree party songs like "Poker Face" and "I've Got A Feeling".  I also liked the urban/electropop hybrid songs that seem to have gone by the wayside.

The good news is hip-hop has had somewhat of a resurgence this year, though not in Top 40.

Well, it depends on whether you are talking about the weather in 1982 or 1987. When did the weather change in the 1980s? Did something happen to the weather in 1985 that they talked about in 1993? And you know what they say, if you don't like the weather, wait a moment.  ;) :D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The End of Wallets

Now in 2017, no one needs to worry about carrying ID cards, passports, keys or wallets because our credentials are embedded in our bodies at birth using a convergence of RFID and nanotechnolgy. In the MSNBC article we began with, it is clear today that Don Monro was right, except for one main point:
Forget face-recognition software; in 2017, it will be all about the eyes. "I think it's possible to free us completely from our wallets and keys using biometric technology if that's what people want in 10 years' time," said Don Monro, a professor at the University of Bath in England.

Back on topic, what will 2017 be like?

Hip-Hop, rap, and R&B will be dead.

Autotune will only be used on spoken word-originated works only. Maybe we'll finally get some autotuned Shatner.  ;D I'm okay with autotune in that respect, such as that Bed Intruder song or John McCain singing Chocolate Rain.

E3Z_giMNUDc
emw0DvF0aIw

But if you can't sing, you can't sing. Yes, I'm looking at you, Miss Black.  ;)

I Somebody will pull a Nolan on Halloween and give Michael Myers his dignity back. Horror will no longer be a wasteland, nor will Hollywood, and original ideas will flourish. Yes, there will still be remakes, but they will be releagated to only the best remakes and whatnot from master directors.

Rock will find some way to stay relevant. If bands have to throw in a dubstep beat or synthpop elements or throw in a rap in a rock song, then so be it. Remember what Neil Young said about rock and roll.

By 2017 everybody will have DHTVs, Blu-rays, receivers capable of DolbyTrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and PCM 7.1 and they will also be using 120hz HDTVs so that they can watch movies in 24p. Spielberg's films will be coming out by then -- maybe Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park.

Nickelodeon will continue to cater to us 80s and 90s kids. Not only will they do the TeenNick block and release shows like Rocko and Hey Dude on DVD, but they will also start making more movies based on All That. We'll be seeing Good Burger 2, Detective Dan, Repairman (man man man...), and Coach Kreeton hitting the big screen in huge franchises.

Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. (and to an extent PBS) will follow Nick's example and bring back their 90s classics in some way, shape, or form. Since most of us are old enough to drink, Disney can name their 90s resurrection, Malt Disney.  ;D Fox will reinstate Fox Kids and maybe buy back all of the Fox Kids shows from Disney. I mean, Saban did it, why can't Fox? Maybe it will air on Fox or FX?

Well here we are in 2017. 6 years has passed by and the OP is sort of right, but there were still quite a bit changes that have happened since 2011. We are at the point where 2011 can seem slightly dated, but not to the extent of it being a different world from now. Let's look at some predictions from the past.

Hip-Hop, rap, and R&B will be dead.

Not even close  ;D

Well... in 2017 the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan would be long gone and it will be a peaceful time (I hope).
Electropop will have a huge backslash I am sure. Hip-Hop will still be popular, but it will be different from today.

First point is correct, but it is even less peaceful now than it was in 2011.  ;D
Correct if you are talking about me, but majority of people seem to miss electropop from that time, at least on this forum.

Back in 2011, 2017 seemed like forever for me. It kind of felt like "the future" back then and so far out. However I thought pop culture won't change that much but technology will change significantly. Tech has changed quite a bit, but not to the extent I thought it would back then. Anyways, my apologies for the grave digging.  ;D

2017 will likely either be more of the same kind of garbage we have now, or there won't really be a mainstream media at all anymore, IMO.

There is a mainstream media, it's called the Internet. The media already moved on to YouTube and Twitter, since they noticed that barely anybody watches TV now.

TBH we will probably have to wait until the mid-2020s or so to experience a pop culture that doesn't strong resemble 2009 probably  :(

2017 already drifted away from 2009, considering not everybody used smartphones during that year. Hell, my parents still had flip-phones at the time.

hmm lets see, in 2017 'll be 26.

Politically, you are correct. By 2014, there are these people called Social Justice Warriors, who tend to get upset over everything that's made by straight white men. I am not kidding, this is actually true.
