Subject: Will the 2010s be better or worse than the 2000s?

What do you think (we are just starting to see the 2010s but discuss anyway)?

Still hard to say, but hopefully it will get less trashy and greedy as the decade goes on and distances itself from the 00s.

But was 2010 more like 2000 or was 1971 more like 1982? :D

I think it'll be worse. Just my humble opinion though.

Probably worse, I'd definitely take '04 over '11. At this point I prefer the '00s. TV isn't interesting at all, economy is even worse than most of the '00s, politics is more divided than ever, music is stagnant. Things just continue to be a mess.

One thing I've noticed is that before recently everyone thought that things can only go up from the 2000s. Recently, people are much more pessimistic in their outlooks regarding the 2010s. I think things are going to get worse then better later on.

I think music will get better. There usually is a backlash against over-exposed genres. Disco, Hair Metal, Teen Pop, and hoepfully Electropop.

I think that the 'score' of 2000-2020 will be a tough one economically and definitely a hard one for the music industry too!

For those of you that don't know, a score is 20 years.

I really really hope so, for one thing there needs to be more variety in mainstream music, in 2011 it's basically electropop/dance dominance with some country-pop on the side and the occasional alternative rap song.

As a pessimist, I would say worse. At least its starting really bad. I hope there is some kind of music revolution soon, but maybe times have changed for that to happen.
2000s was a lot better for me because rock was still a big genre.

I personally intend to make the 2010s better with regards to my personal life.  Heck, so far they already are, considering 2010 was the best year of my life up to that point.  I plan to spend the first half of the decade mostly abroad.  Studying abroad in Japan from October 2011 to August 2012, then aim to teach in Asia in 2013 and beyond.  All in all, the 2010s promise to be exciting times for me, at least as far as the first half goes!  I'll be 30 by 2019 so the second half may have that whole "settling down" thing.

All indications are that the next few years will be mostly prosperous for much of Asia, except for ironically (considering I'm studying there later this year) Japan, which has been hindered by their earthquake.  Remember, the 00s weren't that great for the US, but in countries like South Korea, Taiwan, and especially China, it was the best decade many of their people had ever experienced.  As far as North America and Europe are concerned though...I'm not too optimistic about it.

Most 00s rock wasn't very good, most of it was either generic dated post grunge, pop punk or that weird mid-late 00s emo thing.

I like 10s rock so far. The indie sound is refreshing after 20 years of grunge and has a trippy vibe that harkens back to the psychedelic pop of the 60s and 70s, at least imo.

OK, I'm going to keep it real up in here, and I know that people are going to hate me for saying what I have to say, but for those who know me for 4 years in this board, you know how I roll.  Even though I don't go to church as much as I used to, I know what the Bible says about the End Times.  It's going to get worse.  It's not going to get any better.  If you read the book of Revelations, it will tell you what's going to happen in the future.  You think this is bad now, according to God's Word, it's going to get even WORSE in the future, so you better live your life and enjoy it right now the best way that you can.  The prophecy in the book of Daniel and Revelation has to be fulfilled.  In the future, it's going to become a ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT, NEW WORLD ORDER! Let me tell you right now, it's not going to be pretty.

As far as music goes, it's going to be even WORSE than the 2000 decade.  I believe that the last time you heard good music from all genres was the early to mid 2000s, probably because it was still some 90s influence in the music.  It's not going to get any better. I mean, don't get me wrong, there are some hot albums, such as Beyonce's new album, 4.  That joint is HOT!  On average, though, the majority of the music is WORSE. I can't stand that electro-pop, autotune bullsheesh!

You have to look at the signs of the time, sweety.  It's obvious that this world is coming to the end in the future. We are living in the last days.  The Bible says that in the last days, there's going to be wars and rumors of wars.  It's going to be famine in the land.  Earthquakes in divers place. The mark of the beast.  In the future, they are going to start putting chips in people which I believe is the mark of the beast.  Without this RFID chip, you can't buy or sell anything.  When the New World Order comes, you will have NO freedom.  You say that it's not going to happen.  A lot of people are going to disagree with what you are saying.  It's going to happen, not right now, but it IS going to happen. The prophecy has to be fulfilled.

I know this decade hasn't really started culturally ;probably around 2013; but I already have a feeling I won't notice. Maybe I'm just getting old but everything after 1999 seems to be almost the same year, with just really long months.

Yes I know, even people in their 20s won't understand the 2010s because modern pop culture is made for 12-year-old pro-gay girls listening to lady GaGa and her clones.

Well, back in the 1800s there wasn't much difference between decades.

For example, the 1840s and 1860s wasn't that far apart in fashion or music. The 1880s and 1860s wasn't that different from each other either.

Music in the 90s was targetted towards the age range of 12-35.

1999 and after, the target was age 7 to 25.

Was it because of his hearing?

His hearing gradually faded as he got older, and was completely deaf in his final years. He composed his 9th Symphony "The Choral" when completely deaf.

Worse.  With the economy in the toilet and no end in sight to this recession, I think the 2010s will be another lost decade for the US.

The music is already worse.  I actually liked early electropop and was hoping it was going to be a bridge to more pure trance in the mainstream here in the US, like they have in Europe.  I was wrong, and it has evolved into Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus Disney-esque garbage that if you are over the age of 14 you will hate.

Fashion...I hope by the end of the decade tattoos go out of style.  I dont know why but I have a distaste for them.  I would never date a girl with a tattoo.

Yeah I do kind of wish that true dance music would become popular in the US, but unfortunately it doesn't seem like it will ever happen. Like I've said before it's pretty hard for new artists to really breakthrough here. Radio finds a few hot items and nobody else hardly gets a chance. Radio would rather keep playing Britney Spears to death than take a chance on a new pop artist.

Actually, record sales in 2011 are up a bit, both singles and albums (I'm not sure about physical CDs, but singles and albums are up), but still shy of 2009 levels. This may be attributing to the peak of Gen Y getting their first jobs and having more money to spend, and some albums (Adele, Beyonce's 4) have had more adult appeal than in recent years in addition to the electrodance pop. But there is still a big hole to climb. But it's not just culture that may make the '10s worse.

I'm also not pleased that even with the end of the Space Shuttle program that there is currently no clear future of manned spaceflight. This may discourage space/astrophysics/astronomy eductation. It keeps getting harder to escape from the media thanks to cellphones getting more and more sophisticated (I miss the days when all cellphones did was to make phone calls!) This is part of the reason why privacy continues to sag. Hopefully things will improve in a safe manner.

I know this decade hasn't really started culturally ;probably around 2013; but I already have a feeling I won't notice. Maybe I'm just getting old but everything after 1999 seems to be almost the same year, with just really long months.
I'm getting tired of its 1999 still maybe but its because Britney is still popular. I mean teen-pop was not hot at all from 2003-mid 2008 when rap was all the rage.

Britney's showed a suprising amount of stamina for a pop star. I remember when everyone thought she was done after "Toxic", but then in the late 00s she had this big comeback. To be honest I think it's because teen pop came back into style. She was not popular at all in the mid-00s.

Yeah that is a stupid reason to accuse pop culture of not progressing, even though she is still popular , she has changed her sound several times to fit the times. She first started out making bubblegum teen-pop music(1999), then she came of age and went urban/dirty pop(2001), then dance-pop with Toxic(2004), her Blackout album was urban/dance hyrbrid(2007) leading to the current electropop explosion(2009-now). This year(in 2011) she added dubstep influences in her music, she has remained relevent because she has successfully changed with the changes, not the other way around. You can clearly see how music from 2000 to 2011 has progressed from teen-pop/nu-metal to urban dominance/crunk/emo to the urban/dance hybrids of the late '00s to the current electro-house sound in pop(with dubstep very popular in the UK).

The people complaining about no progression or innovation in music are looking at the wrong genres, in rock music, yeah it was rehashing alot of old stlyes(garage-rock, new wave) but on the hip-hop/electronic side, HECK NO! There was progression in hip-hop in the '00s(mainly the early part), I remember the first time I heard "Get Ur Freak On" in 2001, it honestly sounded like nothing before and it surpised alot of urban music fans at the time. Electronic music is all about new sounds and styles, there was alot of past influences in electronica in the '00s(french house borrowed from disco, '80s samples) but there was development of new styles too(reggeaton and dubstep for example). It's like there's this big divide between the (mostly)white rock music audience and the urban audience, I honestly get the feeling some rock fans/critics still think hip-hop is a "fad", like they lump all the different stlyes of hip-hop together.

That is one thing I noticed in recent culture that's a positive change, that the divide or barrier between the music that white and black people listen to is fading as the pop music has an audience of different races. I used to get really irritated when people would tell me I'm not supposed to listen to hip-hop since I'm not black.

Don't get me wrong, I'm only a year younger than you so I do have some nostalgia for early 00's music (particularly the rock, like "Stacy's Mom" which was then, and still is, an awesome song). The thing I like more about today is that I'm more likely to skim through YouTube and find a good underground band that isn't getting much pub, rather than just get into the repetitive, mainstream stuff like I did back then.

LOL That's funny considering that black people invented Rock music, heck Washington D.C. (I live less than 20 minutes from it) was among the very first cities to introduce the Hardcore Punk sound to Rock music on the East Coast. p.s. I am black. As for the specific question at hand, I think the 2010's will be better than the 2000's in terms of music (I think Hip Hop will keep experimenting with Electronica and Worldbeat with Alternative Rap along with a more minimalist, cinematic, somewhat dark and intricate sound, after all listen to Drake's 2011 Take Care and 2010 Thank Me Later, J. Cole's 2011 Cole World, Kanye West/Jay-Z's 2011 Watch the Throne, A$ap Rocky's singles from 2011 and 2012, Maino's 2012 The Day After Tomorrow, Wale's 2011 Ambition, Tyler, The Creator's 2011 Goblin, or B.o.B's 2012 Strange Clouds and you probably might get my point.)

I think Pop music will continue to creep it's way back on top of the music and radio charts (I think it will take on a mixture of holdover bubbly-synthpop and electro-hop that was prevelant in the late-2000's along with a possibly darker, more "mature" sound. After all, look at Lady Gaga, she seems to have been fitting into this description lately. Katy Perry promises that her upcoming album this year will be much more darker than Teenage Dream and Bieber sounds even more grown-up lately, I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled off a Timberlake-style SexyBack lol)

R&B/Soul and R&B/Pop appears to be revisiting the synthy and 808's sound and production of the 1980's and the Adult Contemporary and Urbanistic sound of the 1990's (Think Beyonce's 2011 4 album, Usher's 2012 Looking 4 Myself, Elle Varner's 2011 Only Wanna Give It to You, Cassie's 2012 King of Hearts, Frank Ocean's 2011 Nostalgia, Ultra, Chris Brown's 2011 F.A.M.E., Ne-Yo's 2010 Libra Scale, Robin Thicke's 2011 Love After War, Raheem DaVaughn's 2010 The Love & War MasterPeace, or Erykah Badu's 2010 New Amerykah Part Two:Return of the Ankh.)

As for Rock music, I think the whole Emo trend will finally become extinct this decade if it wasn't already as well as the departure of Post-Grunge and Pop-Rock. I personally think Rock will continue to see an upticking rise in the ever-so popular Indie/Underground scene with elements of Psychedelia and Alternative Rock will probably see better fortunes this decade due to its minimalist appeal and who knows, Grunge itself PROBABLY MIGHT make some kind of a comeback (After all, we are on the eve of a 90's revival in both fashion and music). So if you are a Grunger, cross your fingers. I am more of a Post-Grunge person since I loved Avril Lavigne and Puddle of Mudd, but I do like Nirvana and Alice in Chains sometimes too.

Wow, this getting pretty long. I guess I will try to leave things short for the time being. I think this decade will be better than the 2000's in terms of music (since there will be a greater diversity in music as well as the adoption of interesting new elements in the production sound of some of music's biggest genres), perhaps fashion, television (Toonami is back and I have the 90's Are All That on TeenNick, 'nough said!), movies will probably be as good or even better, and of course, technology will improve.

The only thing(s) I think will get worse this decade are this country's divisive politics, possibly the environment, and/or the progression of more chessy Teen Pop music from both Nick and Disney! lol I am definitely looking forward for the rest of this decade (I will be in my 20s this decade, I will be 20 this fall), but I swear I miss being a kid back in the early 2000's, a much simpler era imo ;)
