Subject: Aviator eyeglasses--will they ever come back?

Written By: Ryan112390 on 07/12/11 at 12:50 am

Will big eyeglasses, like aviator style, ever be popular again, at least, sometime this decade?

The style was popular from the 70s all the way to around the early/mid 90s and I really don't like the modern, ultra small, Geek Squad style frames. Too sleek, too small for my taste. It's awkward looking up and down out of small frames, and I find bigger eyeglasses frame the face better.

They went out of style?  Oh dear God, what have I been doing all these years?

Haters gonna hate.  I dig 'em because whatever I'm wearing, I'll be damned if I have to deal with frames in my peripheral vision.

I thought they were more popular in the 70's.

Yeah but I've seen films and TV shows from the 80s up to around the mid 90s of people still wearing them; Also at least in my own family, even younger guys (think guys who were in their 20s in the early 90s) were wearing that style in the early 90s. It just seems from my photo albums that if you wore glasses, they were some variation of that style up till around '95 or so.

Beyond aviator frames, it just seems like bigger eyeglasses in general (in different styles) were popular up from around the 50s till the mid 90s. I never really saw the sleek, smaller, more "current" style until the late 90s/early 00s.

If you really want to go old school, you ought to look into some aviators with amber lenses.  8)

I always wanted a set of those X-Ray Specs that were advertised in comic books and on bubble gum packages.  8)
