Subject: H-P Throws in the Towel

Written By: LyricBoy on 08/20/11 at 9:37 am

Well, it seems that Hewlett-Packard has thrown in the towel on their TouchPad product which has only been on the market for a month or two.  The product was launched for $399, and then maybe 2 weeks ago the price was cut to $299 because they were not moving.

Yesterday H-P announced they are closing their Pad and phone division, and you can now get a TouchPad for $99.  Burst Buy reportedly has 240,000 unsold TouchPads and is not happy about it. H-P spent about $1.8 billion for this division 10 months ago  :o.  Man that's gotta hurt.

They also announced that they're gonna ditch their PC division.

Given all this news, does anybody here plan on buying an H-P computer or TouchPad?  ???

Bot the HP Touch Pad commercials are everywhere.  Lea Michelle and Russel Brand almost convinced me to go out and buy one.  But then I realized I do not need one lol

PC, absolutely not.

TouchPad?  At $99 for the 16GB version or $149 for 32GB, that's about half the cost that HP paid to manufacture 'em.  In the unlikely event that I come across one, I'd pick one up just for hack value.  They're already relatively easy to hack, and given the interest sparked by this weekend's blowout, a current version of Android should be ported to the thing within a week.

Not that it matters; all brick-and-mortar retailers were either sold out by this afternoon, had simply pulled it from the shelves to ship 'em back to HP, or were still unaware of the cancellation of the product and were wondering why random people off the street kept asking about them and looking all confused when the store said they could only sell at the $500 retail price until they heard otherwise from management.

HP still has their awesome line of printers.

Too bad the Board of Directors screwed up the rest of the company.

No company can truly be dead without a Hitler / Downfall parody.

RIP, HP.

Although I cannot defend HP's current (mis)management team, after the damage Fiorina did to the company, no board of directors on the planet could possibly have saved it.

I'm using an HP printer.

That would be difficult to type with.  ;) ;D

I guess the I-pad thing would be okay once the hard-drive situation is sorted (just reached 64gb capacity) which is hardly breaking the technological barrier. I don't really understand why I would need an Ipad at the moment as my old portable Archos still gives me my media needs, including optional internet with a 320gb hard drive.
