Subject: 3D is a 'gimmick', according to a new UK film poll

Written By: Philip Eno on 09/27/11 at 3:37 pm

British cinema goers have said 3D makes little difference to the quality of a movie, according to a new survey.

Many of this year's blockbusters such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon were made using the technology.

But, responding to a YouGov poll, 41% of people called it a gimmick with just 19% agreeing that 3D improves a film.

Just under half of those polled said it made no difference at all.

Price does not appear to be an issue for more than a third of cinema goers who said that even if the more expensive 3D films tickets were the same price as their 2D counterparts, they would rather see a film in the traditional two dimensional format.

Another 3D movie - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, starring Johnny Depp, proved a big draw for audiences in 2011.

It, along with Harry Potter and Transformers, make up the top three biggest earners at the UK box office so far this year, YouGov said.

However, the findings suggest people "may not have flocked to films such as these because of their new 3D look", but were attracted by reviews, advertising or branding.

In August, the British Film Institute (BFI) said UK box office takings were up last year despite a decline in the number of cinema visits.

The BFI said the increase was boosted by the impact of 3D premium ticket pricing.

Although first introduced in 1915, 3D technology has steadily improved, reaching its peak in 2009 with James Cameron's Avatar.

The director filmed the movie using a unique 3D camera system which he had developed. It went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time.

The survey did suggest that 52% of audiences would be more likely to see a 3D film if they did not have to wear the glasses needed for the effect to work.

I don't care if the movie is in 3-D or not.  Actually if it weren't for my kids wanting to see the movies in 3-D I'd probably not even bother and save a few $$ in the process.  It doesn't make the movie any more or less enjoyable to me.

We're going into a new decade where people like films with 3D vision these days.

Some movies look good in 3-D, like 'Tron Legacy'

But it seems like now adays, all movies are coming out in 3-D.  I don't need to see The Lion King in 3-D.  I don't need to see Justin Bieber in 3-D (I dont even want to see him in 2-D)

I'm thinking that 3-D porn would be a big draw at the box office.

Just think what Ron 'the Hedgehog' Jeremy would look like in 3-D.  ;D

God help us all. :o

3-D isn't in the cards for us.  Rice Cube cannot see it since one of his eyes is screwed up, and I have no interest in going alone or with the kid.

It's almost like 3D was the movie industry's way to drag us away from our 42" plasma or 42" LCD TVs and back into the movie theaters.

Then the home theater industry decided it was a way of selling us 42" 3D TVs within a year or two after most people had spent thousands migrating from their 20-year-old CRTs to "brand new" 42" plasma and 42" LCD screens.

And if that wasn't a sufficiently-braindead business plan, both groups of companies ended up trying to pull it off in the middle of what increasingly looks like it's turning into a double-dip recession.

Oh, sure, I know there are business plans that are even more braindead than that, but mercifully, they tend not to last very long. :)

Wasn't sure whether to throw this down in the Politics thread, the Pony thread, the Family Guy thread, so I went for this onenailed all four instead.  Because staying on topic while nailing the quadfecta/superfecta in 3D is 20% cooler than magic.

It's difficult to look at him in 2D, lol.

3D has been around for around 30 years and it's evolution has been a slow one and, to be honest, I don't think it has got much better apart from the idea you can now have it in your own home. That is if you go out and buy another TV that's 3D compatible and a compatible Blu-Ray player that supports about...10 or 20 Blu Ray DVDs at the moment?

I went to see Avatar and found myself dissapointed by the results. The biggest thing that impressed me was the 3D adverts before the film started, lol.
