Subject: Paul Simon plans Graceland tour

Written By: Philip Eno on 10/12/11 at 2:47 pm

Singer Paul Simon has announced plans to celebrate his 1986 album Graceland by touring the record next year.

The 69-year-old intends to reunite with the musicians who played with him 25 years ago, including South African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

The musician will also release a box set, which will include a documentary about the album.

In 1987 the album, which featured the single You Can Call Me Al, was named record of the year at the Grammys.

With sales in excess of 14 million copies, it is the singer-songwriter's most successful solo record.

This July, Simon - formerly of folk-rock duo Simon and Garfunkel - played a gig with trumpeter Hugh Masekela and Ladysmith Black Mambazo in South Africa.

The concert was filmed by director Joe Berlinger, for inclusion in the anniversary film.

Simon said: "The documentary took me back to the artistic aspects and the political aspects of making Graceland and the controversy that surrounded it and how it was resolved, plus what remains of it and what we learn from it."

Simon recorded with several African artists for the album and introduced them to the world stage.

At the time he was accused of breaking the cultural boycott against the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Nonetheless, fans embraced the record's fusion of African township rhythms and American pop, sending it to number one in the UK for six weeks.

This year, the singer completed a world tour after the release of his 10th solo album, So Beautiful or So What. He also played the Pyramid stage at the Glastonbury festival, while suffering from a throat infection.

The festival set included several Graceland tracks, including The Boy In The Bubble and Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes.

Perhaps Paul will do a remake of the You Can Call Me Al video with Chevy Chase, too.  8)

They can rename the song "You can call me Old" if they record it again.
