Subject: The 35mm camera is dead!

Written By: yelimsexa on 10/18/11 at 1:04 pm

Apparently, The big three motion picture camera manufacturers — Aaton, ARRI, and Panavision — have all halted production on traditional 35mm cameras. It's only digital film; all those reels are no more. That means that film will become increasingly scarce. It's scary that most of the movies from the 1990s are now considered bygone as a result of this. This includes celluoid, which was used to create drawings for cartoons; 2D animation is still around, and doable in a "cel-inspired format", but this is another victim. My condolences to the original inventors/developers of this groundbreaking device.

Another breed from the Industrial Age gone to waste; and there isn't much remaining.

Porn made the transition nearly thirty years ago.

Up until the late 60's, "stag films" were done on grainy 8mm stock.  Then in the late 60's and early 70's they upgraded to the much more expansive 16mm format as Porn became "chic".

Then came the Golden Age of the mid to late 1970's... porno flicks shot in glorious 35mm film stock.  But that era lasted only 4 or 5 years, when video took over.  :-\\

Back on topic:

Um, April Fool's Day is April 1, not October 18/19.  ::)

Seriously, this must be a joke. The death of 35mm would kill my directing career before it even begins.  :\'( I will shoot most everything on film. I guess Nolan is gonna quit directing too. He swears by film, and so will I.

We shall rise, and we shall keep 35mm film alive. Film or die.

those were the days. it actually survived until around 1985 or so, boogie nights simplified the equation for dramatic reasons but there are a lot of glorious porn flicks from the early 80s shot on 35mm. "cafe flesh" is a life-changer.

cafe flesh even had a slow-motion camera! those were high maintenance for a bunch of reasons. very expensive, lots of moving parts, and if you blow a take (sorry!) you've just wasted like three times as much film. people these days don't realize how hard it was to capture even the most rudimentary effects like slow motion before computers became a big part of the equation.

I've been waiting for quite some time to see the world's first porn flick filmed in the awesome 70mm IMAX format.  Let's hope I live to see that day...  :P

Well for starters because an IMAX camera costs something like $300,000.  And the film is ridiculously expensive.  :P
