Subject: Why all new cars look the same?

Written By: 00steen on 01/28/12 at 5:22 pm

I don't like any single of them! They all look the same - large, fugly, oversized headlights and large grilles. I like 2002-2006 cars better, they differed more in terms of styling and were more cleaner and less over-styled. And headlights are getting larger and larer, on some cars they are already out of proportion. I guess this thing is all car makers' wet dream these days:

Most of them are very over-styled now, very little harmony, too many random curves and wedges. Cars looked best from the 1950s to the 90s.

First of all, that's totally Photoshopped.

Second, no matter what era, all new cars looked similar to each other. In the 1940's to early 1950's pretty much every car (with perhaps the exception of Studebaker) looked like an upside-down bathtub with wheels, and as the 50's progressed cars got longer and wider and got more chrome and bigger tailfins. Personally I think auto design peaked in the mid-to-late 1960s, cars were very well proportioned.

Then in the mid 70's everything went downhill and got worse and worse. The 80's were an absolute sh!t decade for cars and things weren't much better in the 90's.

This is just my opinion, but I think todays cars are the best looking since the 60's.

Just as an example, compare this 1991 Chevy Corsica:

http://trialx.com/curetalk/wp-content/blogs.dir/7/files/2011/06/cars/1991_Chevrolet_Corsica-3.jpg

to a 2013 Chevy Malibu.

Jesus Christ, that new thing is ugly.

I prefer the 2013 one.

New cars are mostly fugly. Except this one:
http://www.thevine.com.au/resources/IMGRELATED/02-ford-evos-concept-car-fg-falcon_080911015315.jpg
Much better than the 2012 Focus or the Fiesta imo.

In general there was a greater variety in car design in 2000-2005. Even mediocre cars looked good:

I'm not trying to be 'contrary' or 'different', but I truly do think that the 80s was the worse decade for cars!

In my opinion, the 90s was better than the 80s, but I prefer 00s and 10s cars overall.

If you mean American cars, yes indeed.
But that was not the case with most Europeans imo, they looked better in the 80s and the 70s. And when it comes to the Japanese ones, well I think most of them looked better in the first half of the 80s. They got extremely uglier by the mid/late 80s. (e.g the 1st gen Toyota Tercel sedan/coupe/hatchback looked better than the 2nd gen hatchback, which looked like a banger since new; ironically, the same design looked much better on the 4x4 Tercel wagon).

I think the worst time for car design was the late 80s - early 90s time frame. Cars looked too plastic back then (that was the dreaded jelly-bean era). However cool and modern they looked back then, the aerodynamic jelly-bean era auto designs didn't age well at all in my opinion. Nor did 90s bio-design (ovoid bubble cars).

I find that most European cars from the late 70s/early 80s look better than their late 80s/early 90s successors. By the mid/late 90s cars started looking good again. I think for the most brands variety and good design peaked in the early/mid 00s.

I agree with you. '80s cars are horrible and ugly. '90s cars were just plain which lasted into early '00s, mid '00s - '10s are more stylish.

Hahahaha are you on drugs or something?  ;D Give me some examples, will ya?
And let them be sedans, not some sport coupes and Ferraris.

Well the Focus is one example, IMO the early 2000s Focuses are kind of boring and fairly ugly and the early 2010s look more futuristic and stylish.

Another great example is early 2000s Impalas, they're really ugly IMO while the 2006 - '10s models are much more attractive.

OMG, it looks like a Peugeot! And these holes on the front bumper are so fugly.

Hyundai Accent/Verna progression:

In 2000-2003 it looked nice:
http://117.53.175.169/CarPhotos/factory/photos/A8Y01A.jpg

In 2003 it got a boring facelift with blob eyes, but at least the body stayed the same.
http://www.carfolio.com/images/dbimages/zgas/models/id/10729/2003_accent_crtd_gsi.jpg

In 2006/7 it was replaced by this generic looking fugly thing:

And more recently it looked either like this:

IMG! Look, the headlights are gonna melt! ;D

or like this:

Looks like their influence was this:

I personally prefer cars made from around the mid 50s (whenever the tail fin era began) to the mid 90s. I think cars stopping looking nice around 1997 or so.

I'm probably the only person on earth who likes 80s car design. It was just so...clean and simplistic. Sometimes less is more.

Back in 2001, Carlos bought a Honda Civic. He went to the local convenient store and when he left the store, got into the car-but something wasn't right. He then realized that he was in the wrong car!  :o :o :o :-[ :-[ :D :D ;D ;D ;D ;D

There are basically one or two cars I don't like the look of, but otherwise I don't care!  When we bought our car in 2010 Dai was asking me to choose between a VW Passat or a Ford Mondeo.  To me they looked superficially the same so what did it matter which he chose!
