Subject: Lionel Richie - Tuskegee

Written By: AL-B Mk. III on 04/05/12 at 3:14 pm

Lionel Richie recently released an album, Tuskegee, featuring his classic hits redone in a country style, and as duets with current country stars. Currently it's #2 on the Billboard Album charts.

I'm kind of on the fence about it but it doesn't sound too bad and I'm thinking about getting it.

What are your takes on this?

If you like it, why not?

I was at 'Sam the Record Man' a few weeks ago and they had it playing on their speaker system.  I thought it sounded pretty good.  Then their CD started to skip, and it sounded like a remixed dance song.  I was like "This is awesome!", but then the CD went back to normal, and it was still good.

I really enjoyed Darius Rucker on 'Stuck on You'

I'm not sure about this one but I'm not crazy about Lionel Richie changing his genre, I liked him when he was back in the 1980's singing All Night Long, Running With the Night, Stuck on You and a whole bunch of others but having them all being sung in country-style, I'm on the fence with that one too.

Okay...I don't get it.  Who cares what genre?  If the music is good it is good, if it isn't then don't.  Why do you need a consensus to figure out if you like the music?  Does it bother you that Lionel Ritchie is singing his songs with a country beat?  Is it bothering you that all these country singers are lining up to sing Lionel Ritchie songs, because that is what this is, country singers lining up to sing Lionel Ritchie songs, with Lionel Ritchie.

This is the lineup

“You Are” with Blake Shelton
“Say You, Say Me” with Jason Aldean
“Stuck On You” with Darius Rucker
“Deep River Woman” with Little Big Town
“My Love” with Kenny Chesney
“Dancing On The Ceiling” with Rascal Flatts
“Hello” with Jennifer Nettles
“Sail On” with Tim McGraw
“Endless Love” with Shania Twain
“Just For You” with Billy Currington
“Lady” with Kenny Rogers
“Easy” with Willie Nelson
“All Night Long” with Jimmy Buffett

So what do you have the problem, with and why?  I know that I will be downloading Willie

Back then it had more of a funky beat.

All Night Long (All Night) had a calypso beat, and Stuck on You was a pop ballad

Ritchie is from Tuskegee and went to college there.  I think the band is just a house band.

and Endless Love....Lady...Easy....  funky beat  ???  The music he wrote wasn't one beat.  Ritchie has been crossing genres his whole career, but because he decides to do this album with (what we now call) country singers people get all tempest in a teapot and want to know what he think he's is doing.  I just don't understand why.

Can't Slow Down was an album track, not released as a single
