Subject: Is this forum dead?

Outside of the OMG Decadeology Nostalgia thread, this place seems REALLY dead compared even with say a year ago...At least one of the moderators (Brian) hasn't even signed in in a month...Is this forum dying?

There has been a lot of activity. I guess you need to know WHERE to look. If you go to the Playful Penguin Place, the Writing On The Walrus, or More Than A Decade you will see a lot of activity. In fact, I think just within the last week there have been a lot of new threads. (Thanks, Quirk.  ;) )

Curious...what is it that you want/expect from us (apart from decadeology, 'cause you're not getting that)?  ???
And no offense, but I see you yourself have made 685 posts in just over 3 years... I mean, that's not helping (much).

Or read posts about a kid who wants you to give him money for an iPod because his mean mother won't?  ;D

Funny thing, is that when the site was busier about 8 years ago, people complained there were too many active threads. Now it's the opposite.  A lot of the activity is spread out too, so that tends to disguise how active things are as well.

Usually forums die where new members are not tolerated while the rest is behaving like a big ignorant 'family' kissing each other. The forums die, especially the decade forums, because nearly everything is considered 'decadeology' even if it is not. The 'OMG'-thread shows how stupid this forum really is now.

If you care to wade through that whole thread you will find that several people covered 'problems' with new members.  I think its been discussed fairly thoroughly now.

Given that people having been predicting the death of these boards for the lack of tolerance towards new members for the past five years or so I think we can safely say that it really isn't going to happen.  Yes, we may have lost some potentially great members but we've also kept a lot of idiots away.

Wow, I am a new member, and so far it looks like people are 'tolerating' me fine. And as far as a family, I would rather be at a site where people treat each other as such and not as enemies, flaming every 5 seconds and going on tirades.

Retroworld was not even online for 2 months. In my opinion it had been closed too early and the administrator should have waited at least another six months. It did not die. It's just that only few people knew about it and there were not many google entries.

I find it interesting that you post as a "former member." I once belonged to a forum that I quit a LONG time ago and I have no idea what they are talking about now. I haven't been back since I quit because I didn't care for it. If you quit this site because you didn't care for it-then why are you lurking? Also, why do you have to disguise yourself and tell us who we know you as.

We welcome new members! However, some "new" members turn out not to be new after all and are "former members" who were banned.

And yes, we do have some threads that are basically nonsense threads. They are just meant to be fun and not have any meaningful discussions. Our meaningful discussions can be found in the Tenacious Tuxedo Talk.

Retroworld didn't die because of lack of funds, it died because none of the fun, cool people from inthe00s who like to laugh and have a good time went over there. Seriously...aren't these "decadeologists" the most humorless, boring collection of party-poopers you've ever seen in your life? They're about as much fun as a meeting of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Hell, they wouldn't know how to have a good time even if you got them all drunk and then dropped them off at the Moonlight Bunny Ranch with a platinum VISA. We even created the TTT just because one of them was whining that we were having too much fun.

I wasn't going to say anything about the demise of retroworld until "FormerMember" came barging in here and calling us all stupid and ignorant. And yeah, I know I'm feeding a troll but I had to say what I had to say.

FormerMember:  You know how at the top of each one of our boards we have a sticky thread titled "Decadeology - What it is and why it is banned - please read?"  Well, if and when you decide to start up another decadeology site you may want to give people fair warning before they register.

At the top of each one of your boards you should put up a sticky thread of your own with the title "Humor - What it is and why it is banned - please read."  ::)

I think most of us discussed all we wanted/needed to discuss years ago.

Well, there's a lot of that.

And there's the fact that it's a lot easier to just farking google it today than it was even five years ago.  Ten years ago, you had to personally know someone who knew something.  Five years ago, you had to be able to google around a bit before you could find a forum where there were people who recognized that obscure game/remix reference you were looking for and who had done the original research, because they couldn't JFGI.

Today, a lot of random users can just aimlessly google "thing that you hit with the thingies" and come up with either Richard Cheese's lounge cover version of Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up or the, umm, version with the Russian subtitles if you like to bang the drum slowly if you know what I mean and I think you do... but when they've found the answer to their problem elsewhere, they don't need to find places like this.  They've got the direct YouTube link to the lyrics, movie, video, or parody they were looking for, without having to ask members of any particular forum for guidance.

I wonder whatever happened to Andrew the Talking Walnut.  ???

I would not mind him coming back to these boards to chat.  8)

HIM!

And while we're at it, Sister Morphine.  (Sorry about flaming you with that Bill Hicks quote.  We disagreed on the marketing thing.  But you were cool, and I repsected the way you flamed me right back.)

And King Tut, who was just plain funny.

DECADEOLOGY!?  I REMEMBER YOU.  WE KILLED YOU!

OK, I'm ready to bury the hatchet, but props for the Robocop reference, even though I can't find track 8 from Drama Dream.

Are you feeling sorry for them?

I've felt nothing but pity for it since I realized just how obsessed it was with us, but that's beside the point.

Retroworld was not even online for 2 months. In my opinion it had been closed too early and the administrator should have waited at least another six months. It did not die. It's just that only few people knew about it and there were not many google entries.

No hard feelings, weve-got-a-pretty-good-idea-who-you-are (and are OK with it, mostly :).  For what it's worth, I think we've got the opposite problem - a thousand posts a day from two or three members posting one-word replies to a hundred threads.  None of which are actually read by human eyes, and all of which serve only to drive actual content off the "most recently-active threads" boards.  How's about we love and tolerate and bury the hatchet?

And yes, we do have some threads that are basically nonsense threads. They are just meant to be fun and not have any meaningful discussions. Our meaningful discussions can be found in the Tenacious Tuxedo Talk.

At the risk of turning this thread into serious discussion... how about we just don't index them?  Don't have 'em show up in most-recent-active-threads?  Just leave 'em there for accounting purposes and let those who want to participate in that sort of thing go hog-wild and get their post counts into the millions?  I mean, sure, I could write a shell script that would accomplish as much within a few days (and as a courtesy to my fellow board members, I'd put it all in one single, easily-ignored, longest-thread-ever, to the tune of 400 threads a day, rather than twenty individual posts to twenty threads a day)

Remember back in the day that we created "Writing on the Walrus" as a sub-board because our noise-threads, particularly competing attempts to generate the longest-thread-ever were crushing the server?  Chucky's servers may have gotten faster, but if, every 24 hours, there are about 200 threads (only 10-15 of which contain content meant to be read by human eyes), what does that make us look like to any potential newcomers who've chanced upon this place from a random Google search like I did about 5 years ago?

Thisis Chucky's board, Chucky's hardware, Chucky's hosting, Chucky's paying the bills, so I play by Chucky's rules.  But if you showed a stranger the recent actions (with cookies temporarily disabled so they saw what a new user would see), would they conclude that there are actual human beings here, or only spambots?

I'm not Donnie Darko, never was and never will be, nor am I any former member of this site. The date it says I joined on my profile is when I joined. I don't feel you all suck nor do I hate any of you, I actually like this site a lot and don't want to ever see it die. FormerMember is gone, which makes me glad for the most part but I wish he could answer me on this:

He kept calling us ignorant, and stupid, and juvenile, and narrow-minded, but as far as I know, none of US ever spammed Retroworld. Sure we may have constantly made fun of it in the OMG DECADEOLOGY NOSTALGIA LOVE thread, but we never actually interfered with them. WE never went over there and posted as guests and insulted them. Yet he thought it was perfectly acceptable to troll us. Seems rather hypocritical, dontcha think?

Truthfully, I don't think it's so much the concept of decadeology that most of us hate as it is the constant trolling and spamming that some of them seem to get their jollies from. I'm not going to speculate on who FormerMember really is, because that's exactly what he wants us to do. All that does is stir up suspicion and mistrust among us, which was his true intent, and sadly he's been quite successful at it.

But it doesn't matter who FormerMember really is, because the important thing is that he's gone now and this site is a much better place without him.

I'd also like to say that I believe Rhett Butler when he says that he's not involved in any of the trolling that has been going on. Lots of us (myself especially) have thrown a lot of rocks and arrows his way but not only has he stuck by his convictions, he has also never been anything other than polite and respectful about it. Perhaps it's only fair that we treat him likewise.

Rhett: I've been a real dick to you on numerous occasions and really for no good reason, and I apologize for my actions. And if you still think I'm a dick I understand, but I just want you to know that I'm not going to ridicule you or treat you with disrespect anymore.

Well said. I agree with you on all points.

How can WE be spamming when we are members of this forum and we are all abiding by the rules of this forum? You really don't know what the definition of spamming is, do you? Spamming is when you STILL hang around even though you claim you hate it here and you hate us and it is clear that the feeling is mutual.

I'm not really a fan of regular bowling. Too loud, alleys smell, and the show rental skeeves me out. But sounds like youre good at it and that's awesome.

Even though I can't bowl worth a damn, I've always liked bowling alleys. There's just something kind of old-school and manly about them, and aside from indoor smoking bans they seem to have almost the exact same atmosphere and vibe that they had 30+ years ago when I was a kid.

Plus, this might sound a little weird but the sound of bowling pins falling down is one of my favorite sounds, I've always found it to be oddly pleasant and soothing .

Not me, I have a clumsy streak a mile long, and the bowling alley is NOT my friend.

Back in 1990 me and a few other friends were at a west side of Columbus, OH bowling alley drinking pitchers of beer at midnight (when we should of been working on studio artwork for college) and I slipped up at the foul line...

My right leg went forward, my ankle went right, my knee went left...and my kneecap popped right out. I had just, very painfully, separated my patella (kneecap). :o

Now, I'm laying halfway down the lane, in pain, holding my kneecap in my right hand.
My friends are cracking themselves up, as they think I just pulled off the funniest bowling move short of Fred Flintstones twinkle toes bowling set up.

Long story short, the paramedics were called, and one of them asked what I was doing with my hand.

I said, "holding my kneecap in".
He said, "What are you talking about?"

He took a look at the limp piece of bone hanging by a thread of cartridge in my pants leg and said, "Wow, yeah, you'd better hold that".

Leave it to say, I will NEVER go into a bowling alley again. Count me out. :P

I, too, love bowling alleys but am a bad bowler.  Even back in high school when we'd go bowling a few times a month (yeah the area I grew up in had TONS of stuff for teens to do.  :D ) I was having a great night when my final score was 100.  Oh well, it was still fun to hang out with friends and maybe see other friends at the alley.  It was either that or miniture golf.  I'm an even worse golfer.  ;D

Before NAFTA sucked most of the good-paying manufacturing jobs down to Mexico, Lincoln, Nebraska was a much more blue collar town back in the 1980's. My dad and his work buddies from National Crane in Waverly had a bowling team (The Steelworkers) that played in a league on Tuesday or Wednesday nights, and their main rivals were from the big Goodyear plant in Lincoln.

Oftentimes my dad would take me along on league night, but the average 12 year-old's idea of fun isn't sitting around and watching a bunch of grown men bowl so between frames I'd hit my dad up for quarters and run off to the arcade in the bowling alley. Which my dad didn't seem to mind for the most part because I wasn't pestering him.

Well, one night in 1983 I was there with my dad, doing the usual begging him for quarters and him obliging me, but when I came back I saw that he had rolled 3 strikes in a row. I then got another quarter and played some more video games for about 10 minutes and when I came back he'd rolled a couple more. By this time I knew something special was happening and pretty soon some of the other bowlers started gathering around.

My dad was on fire like I'd never seen it and everyone was all thinking he might just roll a 300. Alas, he finally missed in the 9th or 10th frame but he ended up with a 275 which turned out to be the high game of the year for his league and he got a nice trophy which is still in my parent's basement. (The man who had the previous high game, which was a 267, was a friend of our family and he was cool about it.)

But it was cool to see all my dad's work buddies slapping him on the back and treating him like the hero of the night.  :)

towards the end I was on fire and that's where the 6/10 split came in it was either 1, both or a gutter ball so it wound up as a gutter ball.

You might be familiar with a show called Romper Room, where they have kids in the audience come onto the show as "helpers".  Same concept with Bozo the clown, Lyric boy was on the show in 1969, when he was a kid (presumably).  Unless he literally meant that he was "on" Bozo the clown, and then... well... I guess you'll have to use your own imagination for that one.  8-P

Back in the 80's our basic cable package included WGN out of Chicago and they had their own version of The Bozo Show. The one thing I remember was that they had these various carnival games and the consolation prize was always Schneider's string cheese.  ;D

In 1969, your TV had 53 channels?  What the hell kind of advanced TV did you have? :D
When I was a kid in the early 80s, my TV only had 13 channel memory and it was a new set at the time

Back then TV's had 2 dials: one for VHF (Very High Frequency) and one for UHF (Ultra High Frequency). VHF, which was much more commonplace, was Channels 2 through 13 (there was no Channel 1), and UHF was Channels 14 through (I think) 83.  We didn't have a UHF station in eastern Nebraska until 1986 when a new Fox affiliate (KPTM) started up on Channel 42,  and since we had only 5 channels before that it was actually quite a big deal.

Perhaps it might have been differsnt up in Canada.

Those were the old school TVs with the rotary dials.  The UHF nob used to make a loud click when you turned it.  We never had UHF channels until the mid 80s.  First channel I remember getting above the standard 13 was Channel 50 (WWTI) out of Watertown.

I'm pretty sure I remember there were affiliates of Nebraska Public Television in other parts of the state that broadcast on UHF before the 1980's.

As I said before, when KPTM Fox 42 came on line in 1986 (maybe '87) it was actually quite a big deal, and now that I've looked into it, a while back I made a thread about the start-up of the Fox Network.

WPGH-53 was the new cool UHF channel in town.  Although for years we had WQEX-16 and I think channel 16 counted as UHF, not sure there.

Dials, knobs, six of one, half dozen of the other.

Back in the 1970's I hated TV rotary dials not because they gave me blisters but because before TV's had remotes, if you were the youngest then once you were tall enough to reach the dial, YOU were the remote. "Hey Alan, get up and go over to the TV. Now turn it to Channel 3. Now Channel 6. Now 7. OK that's good, sit back down now."

And it wasn't just the dials either. "Now grab the right antenna. Right a little, now back...back a little more...little more...perfect!" Not just that but before TV's had electronic tuning, you had to adjust the picture manually. By the time I was 6 I knew what the little TUNE, CONTRAST, HORIZ, AND VERT. HOLD knobs were for.

The worst part is, my younger brother was born in 1975 and by the time he was big enough to take over for me, guess what? We had a TV with a remote by then.  :P
