The Duke of Edinburgh has been taken to hospital with a bladder infection, Buckingham Palace says.

Prince Philip, who is 90, has been taken to the King Edward VII Hospital in London from Windsor Castle as a "precautionary measure".

He will miss the Diamond Jubilee concert at the palace - being attended by 12,000 people - but the Queen will still go, a palace spokesman said.

The prince will remain in hospital under observation for a few days.

The prince, who had treatment for a blocked coronary artery in December, will also miss the national service of thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral on Monday.

This was due to be followed by two receptions, a lunch at Westminster Hall and a carriage procession to Buckingham Palace, with a balcony appearance by the Queen and a fly-past.

A palace spokesman said the prince is "understandably, disappointed about missing this evening's Diamond Jubilee Concert and tomorrow's engagements".

The concert will end with the Queen lighting one of 4,500 beacons across the world marking her 60-year reign.

The Earl of Wessex, who along with his wife and two children has just visited his father Prince Philip in hospital. A "good rest" is probably required, he tells the massed television reporters, adding: "He's been watching it all on television... but I can't tell you which channel."

Sad for the Queen that he wasn't by her side, but watching it I was thinking that at their age maybe there was a bit too much at one time.
