Subject: 50 Shades of Grey - what's the deal?

Written By: ChuckyG on 06/05/12 at 10:46 am

I keep hearing about this bad Twilight fanfic that got published recently.  Are middle aged women that desperate for poorly written smut?

There's an EPIC, EPIC I TELL YOU, picture thread on fark right now with actual quotes from the book. Such comedic highs I have not seen in a long time I have to tell you! I want to make this one into a poster...

As a middle aged, some would say elderly, but...., anyway, I heard how wonderful, how hot, how great, so I checked it out, ho hum....  Maybe my life has been more blessed than others.  ::)

I think the first quote mentioned on that page might be reflective of what's actually practised in the BDSM community. I remember reading some BDSM fiction over sixteen years ago that was filled with lines like that.

The object of desire in the biggest-selling porn for women is a sadistic billionaire businessman who enslaves, humiliates, and batters a vulnerable young virgin.  "50 Shades" is not the first mommy porn playing on this theme, nor will it be the last.

I have always found women's claims that they want a kind, sensitive man with whom to embark on an equal partnership rather self-deluded, if not disingenuous.

I dunno.  I've read my share of bad Twilight fanfic, but never with official corporate endorsement like those IKEA folks do.

Princess Molestia (right there on the boderline of barely-safe-for-work but not-safe-for-sanity) would like to remind everypony who doesn't know the difference between BDSM and bad Twilight fanfic, that erotic asphyxia with a partner is dangerous enough all by itself, and that trying to do it yourself - autoerotic asphyxia - is asking for even more trouble, because if (when) you lose consciousness, there's nobody around to loosen the rope.  Game over, thanks for playing.

Seriously, even if you survive, you don't wanna end up like these two, where the joke started with "Twilight, get my rope." (14:20) and ended with Dashie saying "Don't tell me, you tied yourselves up?!"

  - Actual framegrab and quote, Season 2, Episode 10, Secret of My Excess.

Safe, Sane, Consensual.  This isn't one of those "choose any two" jokes, ya need all three.  Besides, pop culture (and this board) have been around long enough make it clear that the pursuit of certain kinky pleasures INXS can lead to unhappy endings, even if the kicks were fast as lightning.

Ah, the things you learn on the Internet.

Probably are, but why not fix what's broken?  For example, if the writing's the problem, why not an audiobook version?  A proper narrator, such as Gilbert Gottfried, can turn even the most poorly-written smut into something guaranteed to induce both shortness of breath and tears of joy.

Well of course.  That's a bookstore.  They sell books.  So let's be fair and take a look at some book reviews before we pass judgement.  I suppose I'll continue with one of my favorite lines from the reviews of the magnificently hilarious Ms. Lumsden:

With apologies to Simon and Garfunkel, and John Valby:

The problem's all inside your said, she said to me,
The answer's easy if you take it logically,
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free,
There must be 50 shades of grey in fanfic.

Let us enumerate the 50 shades:

You just sit there and fap, Cap,
Put it in yer hand, Ann,
Mop up the sluice juice,
Listen to me!
Aaw, ya make it go schlick, chick,
On the washing machine, Jeanne,

I've never read it personally but from what I understand it's like some BSDM book involving vampires which spawned off of a woman's love for Twilight. ;\

I did not like Twilight. Which I did actually read mind you, not just watch the movies. I thought it seemed like a self-insert fantasy riddled with purple prose and angst.

...I really doubt I would like 50 Shades of Gray if I read it considering it started out as a fanfiction of a book I already disliked.

Well, at least books like this inspire some people to read, even if their taste in literature isn't ideal with mine.

Well, I could have gone with a line starting with "Do it how ya like", but why offend the lesbians?  (Besides, then I wouldn't have been able to use the word "fap".  Gimme a one-syllable female name that rhymes with "fap" and it's there, dude!)

Yeah, 50 Shades is basically that, with the characters renamed, and with a few more naughty words. Its greatest literary sins aren't the Mary Sue aspect (although that's a big factor in its badness), nor that it was a riff off Twilight fanfic, nor that it's erotica, it's that it's poorly-written erotic fanfic.  There's better fiction out there, and there's better smut out there, yet somehow this one took off.

Cool. Read em and laugh, LOL! I'm sure it can get much more graphic than granny sex though!  ;D

I'm sure it can, but do we really wanna go there?  I mean, we had a whole thread about whether or not the word moist grossed anybody out.

Even I'm not gonna look for R34 of Granny Smith, because although I'm not sure what I'll find, I'm sure I'll find something.

Three Shades of Literary Review, courtesy Katrina Lumsden:

Book 1: Fifty Shades of Grey
Book 2: Fifty Shades Darker
Book 3: Fifty Shades Freed

Read 'em and weeplaugh!  The reviews are great, but I'd suggest calling safeword on reading all three books...

Probably the best reviews for a trilogy I've ever read. I laughed so hard! ;D

Well, obviously not the big death, or you wouldn't be around to post about it.

Hmm, apparently there's a fourth book to the trilogy.

Don't ask, don't tell!

(Hey, E. L. James, I found it on the shelf next to Anne. N. Riceamplingoquelaure's Sleeping Beauty Trilogy from the mid-80s.)

"Fifty chicken recipes bound to be delicious."

"It evoked something I'd never been able to express. Then one day as I was tying up the ankles of a chicken for roasting, I realized why some of the scenes in the book were so strikingly familiar. It turns out I've been practicing BDSM for years – but with poultry."

Fifty Shades of Chicken has a climax much like that of To Serve Man: to wit, IT'S A COOKBOOK!

Meanwhile, in Ottowa...

Inspired by the Fifty Shades of Gray popular erotic novels, store manager Mel Lockhart and her staff posed nearly a dozen Barbie and Ken dolls in a variety of sexual positions depicted in the novels, including Ken and Barbie, Ken and Ken and Barbie and Barbie engaged in oral, anal sex and other shenanigans.  Even though there is no nudity -- the dolls don't even have genitals -- the display is as raunchy and hardcore as doll play can get.
