Subject: What's your favorite time period for music?

Written By: warped on 08/08/12 at 8:36 pm

This question got me thinking because on this forum, lots of different type of music is being discussed.

My favourite time period for music is
1) 1966 to 1971, closely followed by
2) 1972 to 1978.

I chose 1) 1966 to 1971 comprises the better years (IMO) for The Beatles, the best years for the Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and the psychedelic era as well as great bands ( like the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel ) and great classic rock songs.

I chose 2) because it's the music I grew up with as a kid, and I enjoyed the AM hits of the early to late 70s, as well as IMO the best years for Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Styx, Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, Bee Gees, Abba, Queen and others.

What's your favourite time period/era and why?

Being a child of the 80s, I must go with the music I most associate with, being 1980 until about 1993 or so when Gangsta Rap and Grunge took over.  That's when I lost interest in popular music for a long time.

Pretty much the same  for me ... except I extend the second era through to about 1985. Back in the 80's I didn't really like the music (or so I thought).  Now, when I hear some songs from that era... I get all warm and fuzzy and nostalagic. So, the early to mid 80's music wasn't that evil after all ... just different!

I should have posted this in the "More than a decade" thread (I thought I did, but I guess it ain't so). Can we fix that?

1977 to about 1985 really is one of my favorite eras of music ever.
1998 was one of my favorite years ever!
1960 to 1963 is great in my opinion.
Also some jazz of 1920s was okay.

I tried narrowing it down but it was too hard. I'll listen to just about anything from the mid 1960s to the mid 1990s. What an incredible run for music. I don't think it'll be topped for hundreds of years.

For Musique concrète, synthesizer, acousmatic, experimental, and electroacoustic music --

I mark the beginning of the Golden Age with the development of Musique concrète methods by Pierre Schaeffer, Paris, 1948 (the Five Studies of Noises concert) and about 1978, the unofficial end of the Fluxus movement.

My favorite music period matches up very closely with yours, for me I'd say 1967 to 1975, from folk-rock and psychedelia to early disco(The Beatles, Sly and The Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, ect), with an extended period from the '30s/'40s to the mid '80s and then again early '00s(I generally dislike the '90s 8-P).

I would say pretty much everything from 1986-2000.

I would say bewteen 1980-1989, music after that sucked like gangster and hardcore rap in the mid 1990's then I started to like it again in the early 2000's.

This one's pretty easy for me. It's hard to argue that the span from "Like a Rolling Stone" (1965) until "Exile on Main Street" (1972) is not the greatest era in music history.

Not only were four of my favorite bands (Stones, Beatles, CCR and The Band) at their absolute artistic peaks, but any list of the greatest rock songs of all time will probably fill out about 70% of it's content with songs from this time period. The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye were all producing many of the all time greatest R&B songs as well, so it's about alot more than just rock, even though this era is typically defined by it.

I really used to like the 1920's - 1940's from when I was about 12 until 20, however I changed my taste a bit during the last years. Mostly 60's-80's and I start to like current music since about '08.

Momentarily I am also a bit into stuff from my childhood (early-mid 90's), so you could actually say that I like anything since 1960 with a an emphasis on 70's and 80's.

Late 90s to late 00s was best (1998 - 2008)

Know what would've made the '71-'75 period even more fantastic, if The Beatles made about 3 more albums together, some of the solo work from the individual Beatles members was pretty good as well(especially Band on The Run and All Things Must Pass albums, select songs from John Lennon like Mind Games and Jealous Guy) ;), imagine if all of the best of that stuff was combined together. 8)

I also think The Beach Boys made their best music around this time period, after Pet Sounds, around '69-'72, Carl and Dennis Wilson were both very talented and went underrated(Carl was the known as the "soulful" one).

My personal favorite era of music was from 1964 to 1972, particularly 1965-68.

I also think that 1991-95 was a high point for music as well .

Have you listened to Smile? It was recorded in 1966-67 but ultimately abandoned in '67 due to opposition from the other band members (Mike Love in particular) and Brian Wilson's descent into drug addiction and mental illness, and although Brian rerecorded it in 2004, the original Beach Boys sessions were finally released in 2011.

If you haven't checked Smile out yet then I give it my highest recommendation, I think you'll love it. :)

Which albums from the 1969-72 era would you recommend?

I think I've narrowed it down to: 1966-1976 (psychedelic rock era) and 1983-1987 (I love "the 80s sound").

I noticed most people think 1964 to 1984 is a 'golden era' of music of some sorts.  ???

I've heard some songs from Smile, it is a pretty weird album, I just like the contributions Carl and Dennis made during that period, The Beach Boys sounded more soulful. The album I would recommend would be Sunflower(1970) and some songs from 20/20(1969) and Surf's Up(1971).

I like most older music - usually, material that came before the 1980's. Some music of which dates back as far to the 1920's.

However, I'm not sure which decade would be my favorite for music.

2. 2001-2004
3. 1956-1964

I love listening to music and I have playlists dedicated to different decades (the earliest decade I have so far is the 1930's). Generally, I find myself listening to music from the 1960's to mid 2000's. My favorite decades of music are the 80's and 90's. If I had to rank the top 3 time periods of music I find myself listening to the most at the moment, they would be (in order):

1. 1990-1999
2. 1980-1989 (especially '83-'87)
3. 2000-2003/2004

I do like 80s music now better than before, just like you. Yes, it was different than the 60s and 70s.  My 3rd favorite period for music was from 1979 to 1990. I can't listen to much after that. I liked Oasis,  I can listen to the Red Hot Chilly Peppers, I like Coldplay not much else.

3 eras. I prefer eras with lots of warm/funky music instead of 'colder' feeling eras like the mid 80s or 2008-now.

-60s and first part of the 70s (first part of this era brought great pop music, and the last part brought lots of nice jazzy/funky/exotic stuff)
-late 80s/early 90s (partly my roots, because of starting listening to pop/dance music in 1991, has also a very positive feel)
-2000-2005 (Neptunes/N.e.r.d. and other funky urban music, and 'warm' sounding electronic music, an organic feel overall)

I notice also some favorites from around 1980, but that's for the biggest part ska (like) stuff, or music from Michael Jackson/The Jacksons. As a whole, I can't put that era in the list above.

I don't really listen to music from the first half of the 20th century and back. It's second half 20th century onwards for me. My music-listening decades ranked:

7. The Fifties (1950-1959)
6. The Seventies (1970-1979)
5. The Tenties <so far> (2010-today)
4. The Eighties (1980-1989)
3. The Sixties (1960-1969)
2. The Noughties (2000-2009)
1. The Nineties (1990-1999)

1.) 1982-1998
2.) 2001-mid 2005
3.) mid 2005-mid 2007

1999-2000 sucks because of teen pop being thrown at you left and right.

2001-mid 2005 was alright and memorable but not as good as 1982-1998.

mid 2005-mid 2007 kind of still had a 2004 sound but with new stuff coming in previewing what the late 00's would sound like. Basically a combo of mid 2000's and late 2000's era's. There was still good stuff like Omarion and Lloyd but crap like Mims.

I think once Soulja Boy or Lil' Wayne came out I got disgusted and that was it.
