Subject: FAIL

Written By: batfan2005 on 08/10/12 at 4:35 am

I have noticed as part of the early 10's culture, the (over)use of the term "FAIL", especially in Facebook status updates. Normally used in the context "(bad result from a bad idea)=FAIL". There are also pics on the internet (that also get shared on FB) that show such results. Hopefully this thread does not = FAIL.

I notice it too.

I wonder myself when exactly the whole term first became popular on the internet. I'm guessing late 00's (2008 maybe?) because that's when I started seeing/hearing it. ???

Yeah, definitely in the late 00's decade. Your estimate is about right.

PC Magazine ran a column called "Abort-Retry-Fail" for years... well back into the 90's

Earlier than that.

Probably originating from 1998's Blazing Star Japanese mistranslation to English ("You fail it! Your skill is not enough! See you next time! Bye bye!"), but took off in 2006 with Twitter's Fail Whale.  The meme was viral enough to have its own website (FailBlog) by early 2008, which was just in time for this...

I first noticing it around 2009-2010-ish. One of the very first times I noticed was a shared FB pic of a public toilet stall with unreachable toilet paper.

I noticed "epic" is another term that is overused in the early 10's, normally in the context "That was epic!" to describe an awesome or hilarious situation.

People have been using the words "fail" and "epic" as well as "epic fail" for years on the internet.

This is not a new trend for the 2010's. ;\

I've played MMORPGs for years and I have seen these phrases be popular since at least circa 2004.

How could I have forgotten the (started out as ficticious, but people actually homebrewed stuff and called it the) Fail Whale Pale Ale?

The earliest I remember people using this, especially teens and young people, is probably the early 00s. It probably started in the late 90s though!
