Subject: Do Jackals Exist in the USA?

Written By: LyricBoy on 05/15/13 at 3:35 pm

Yesterday I saw this weird creature in my back yard. The head looked like a mix between a deer, cat, and dog, and it had a very bushy, long tail.

Did some Googling and it looked identical to pics of jackals,  :o which are not supposed to be in North America.

Literature says that coyotes are distant relatives to jackals, but all the coyote pics I have seen don't look like the animal I saw. Thing looked like a jackal.

Anybody got any ideas here?

If you saw my neighborhood it is not we here you'd expect to see either a jackal or a coyote.

Well my next door neighbor is a State Cop with young kids, so I figured he might frown on that sort of thing.  :P

One never knows nowadays what wild animals live in America. I know in my area we have coyotes and foxes, maybe it was a gray fox.

Depending on the breed, the two can look very much alike.

The animal looked almost exactly like this... the bushy tail, big triangular ears, and smallish face. The coat of the animal was very close to this pic too.

I read that Coyotes like to steal burrows from ground hogs.  The place where I saw the animal is loaded with land beavers, so maybe indeed it is a coyote.  If so it was the weirdest looking one I've ever seen.  :o

I was thinking it might be an escaped exotic pet.  Why would somebody want a jackal for a pet?  I don't know.  I don't know why somebody would want a crocodile for a pet either, but some dude had one in a Brooklyn walkup!

It might also be a coyote-domestic dog mix known as a coydog.  These can be very odd-looking canids.  However, this is not likely since coyotes and dogs don't tend to interbreed in the wild.
