Subject: Fifty Shades of Grey film casts lead roles

Written By: Philip Eno on 09/02/13 at 3:28 pm

Britain's Charlie Hunnam and US actress Dakota Johnson have landed the coveted lead roles in the big-screen version of erotic bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey.

Author EL James revealed the news on Twitter, ending months of speculation over who would play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

Hunnam, 33, is best known for his work in such TV shows as Queer as Folk and US biker drama Sons of Anarchy.

Johnson, 23, is the daughter of Miami Vice star Don, and Melanie Griffith.

She appeared with Justin Timberlake in 2010 release The Social Network and played the female lead in US TV show Ben and Kate.

Artist and film-maker Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct the movie version of James' novel, scheduled for release in August 2014.

Published in 2011, Fifty Shades of Grey follows the sexually-charged relationship between billionaire Christian and college student Anastasia.

The novel and its two sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, have become a literary phenomenon that earned James, 50, a reported $95m (£61.5m) last year.

The author called Hunnam "gorgeous and talented" and Johnson "lovely" as she revealed their joint casting to the world.

The former is no stranger to the big screen, having played a lead role earlier this year in summer blockbuster Pacific Rim.

To many, Johnson will be a less familiar proposition, though some may recall her appearances in such comedies as 21 Jump Street and The Five-Year Engagement.

Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum and Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke were among those rumoured to have been in contention for the Christian and Anastasia roles.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Sam Taylor-Johnson's actor husband, and Harry Potter star Emma Watson publicly ruled themselves out of the running after being repeatedly linked to the Universal Pictures project.

This really excites me!

I have been a fan of Hunnam since his first appearance in the UK version of Queer as Folk. I loved him in Nicholas Nickleby with Anne Hathaway, and of course I am an ardent fan of Sons of Anarchy. It's is about time he got a huge role! (His summer movie Pacific Rim was ok, but not nearly as big as 50 Shades) ;)

Dakota Johnson... who knew the spawn of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith would make the cut?! I should also add though, that she fits the written character sketch set out by James in her novels.

Yes, I am completely excited!!

There will be some, but hardly anything that was written in the books. If they were to go that route, it would be billed XXX or whatever the rating is now and they would have to cover all the seats in plastic wrap because of the pervs...

Which, I'm sure, would have multiple uses during the movie....

While I'm also a fan of Hunnam, I'm not sure I can picture him as Christian.....yet....I'll have to re-read the books to see if I can "see" him as Christian. I know, it's a tough job, but I'll struggle through it ;)

You know, re-reading it is a brilliant idea! Perhaps I will do that when I finish my current novel.  Then I will struggle through it with you Kim! Hahaha ;)

I heard Patrick Stewart was to be cast as the lead, but dropped out because they wouldn't change the title to 50 Shades of Earl Grey :D
