Subject: Disney and their "Princess" Image

Written By: Mat1991 on 11/28/13 at 1:00 am

So, if anybody's noticed, two of Disney's recent movies with females as the protagonists (particularly ones that are based off of fairy tales) have had title changes ("Rapunzel" --> Tangled; "The Snow Queen" --> Frozen). It's generally accepted that they're doing this so that their movies won't seem too girly. Yet, it's fine to have a movie with a male name or pronoun in the title (e.g. Wreck-It Ralph)?

Never mind the fact, also, that many of Disney's princess-oriented movies (such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and The Little Mermaid), are some of their most acclaimed. You could make the argument that times have changed since then, but do you really think movies with titles that suggest female protagonists would detract males from seeing them? That's not a rhetorical question, by the way. I want to know what you think.

Sexism still exists, just really subtle.

It's not really a fair comparisson. Back in the old days, cartoon movies about princesses were "family movies" that were aimed at children of either gender. Nowadays we have the Disney Princess™ line and princess-theme direct-to-video movies aimed at girls, which have nothing to offer anyone other than those who are really into cutesy frilly stuff. The reputation of Disney Princesses are very different.

Plus, any kids movie other than specifically girl-oriented movies either has to advertize itself as being etiher a cheeky "Shrek"-type comedy or a big "Lion King"-type epic.
