Subject: It's Morphin Time! Lionsgate Power Rangers movie reboot

Written By: ChrisBodilyTM on 05/07/14 at 6:52 pm

Lord Zedd better watch his back. Saban is teaming up with mini-major movie powerhouse Lionsgate to "recruit a team of teenagers with attitude" and reboot the venerable Power Rangers saga on the big screen, reportedly the original Mighty Morphin team.

Major details have yet to be announced. No word on Zordon, Alpha, Tommy, Lord Zedd, Rita Repulsa, or even Ivan Ooze. I would assume it's the original lineup of Jason, Zack, Trini, Kimberly, Billy, and possibly Tommy (as the evil Green Ranger, perhaps?). No word on Bulk & Skull. No writer or director has been announced, but it's be nice if it isn't Michael Bay.

The only bad thing is that I came up with this idea back in 2007, and I'm not writing/directing this, lol.  :P That's showbiz.

BIG UPDATE!!!

Variety's sensors indicate that...

Roberto Orci has signed on to executive produce Lionsgate’s “Power Rangers” movie  through his newly formed Sneaky Shark.

Lionsgate and Saban Brands announced the “Power Rangers” project in May. Orci will develop the story along with writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who will pen the script.

Orci’s writing credits include “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Star Trek,” “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” “Transformers” and “Mission: Impossible III.” Miller and Stentz have teamed on “X-Men: First Class” and “Thor.”

Power Rangers creator Haim Saban is producing the film along with Brian Casentini, head of development and production for Saban Brands, and Allison Shearmur, who oversaw “The Hunger Games” as president of production at Lionsgate.

When can I sign my contract to direct/co-write?  8) Please keep Michael Bay away from this; I want to direct this so bad. :)

I was 10 when I saw the movie in 1995 and Power Rangers occupied much of my 2nd and 3rd grade childhood!

Roberto Orci is boldly going where he's gone before, Star Trek 3. This means "scheduling conflicts" have forced him to back out of producing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

No replacement has been announced, nor a director or cast.

Alpha, the character list has escaped! Recruit a team of actors with sex appeal.

Go Go Power Rangers!

The character names have been revealed for the five Rangers. Spoiler alert -- we 90s kids have nothing to worry about:

Jason – 17 years old, the makings of someone or something great if he would just get out of his own way. Jason was a legend of this town—a freshman quarterback with the skills to take him all the way. People knew his name. Children wore his jersey. Until, one night Jason wrapped his car around a pole and busted out his knee. Everything Jason was going to become ended in an instant. And with it, he lost himself. When we meet him at the start of the film, he’s a kid in need of redemption. By the end, he’ll be leading this disparate group of teens to shed their individual baggage and find who they truly are.

Kimberly – 17 years old, unconventionally cool all in a way the popular girls wish they were. In fact, she was one of those girls, but isn’t anymore. Not since she’s returned to school after an absence of 6 months. Rumors are flying as to why; rumors she seems not to care about, because she’s come back with this new rebel-without-a-cause, edgy attitude. But the truth is, it’s all masking a deep secret that makes her feel profoundly vulnerable.

Trini – 17 years old, mysterious and extremely bright. Her parents constantly move for work, making Trini the perpetual new girl to any school. A loner who owns it, Trini is self-sufficient, contemplative, but always observant. All she wants is to find her gang of friends, but she’ll never admit it – least of all to herself.

Billy – 17 years old, slight and awkward. Billy is challenged in his abilities to communicate and interact socially. Whip-smart and sweet, but always odd. Sometimes in a fun way, sometimes not, Billy is a kid with no filter. Showing his emotions, understanding sarcasm, and dealing with his OCD is a constant challenge. Has never really had any friends and instantly gravitates towards Jason.

Zack – 17 years old, always the life of the party. Filled with bravado and swagger, Zack’s tough and cool on the exterior. A charming guy who’s never had trouble with the one-liner, nor lacked confidence around women. A great athlete that’s never wanted to play on any team but his own. Zack advertises everything about himself, except the truth, which is that he lives in a trailer park with his single mom, and because of it, feels deeply inferior to all his peers.

Why do you have to be worried about the character names, especially if you're a 90s kid? It's just generic names that teenagers have, not to mention that the Power Rangers franchise just has the same crap done over and over again for the past 22 years. Even with an upcoming reboot, it would just be the same.

There does not need to be a reboot of this movie. It had it's day in the 90's. Leave it there.

I agree. Why does the Power Rangers need to get a theatrical reboot? Doesn't it already have a current TV show that kids today would watch?

They kept changing the series so much it's not even worth it. They should have ended it with the original.

Yeah, it just seems like the original was the only good one in the franchise. I don't know why are they still making more installments for it.

I don't see much merchandise for it like there used to be back when, so I don't know if it's even very popular among kids now. It's not a craze like it was.
