Subject: Kate Bush sets new album chart record

Written By: Philip Eno on 09/01/14 at 9:11 am

Kate Bush has followed her stage comeback by becoming the first woman to have eight albums in the charts at the same time.

Two of the singer's albums are in the top 10 of the new chart, and eight overall in the top 40.

It comes after she returned for her first live concerts for 35 years.

The only artists ahead of Bush are Elvis Presley, who had 12 entries in the top 40 after his death in 1977 and the Beatles who had 11 in 2009.

Bush's album The Whole Story is at number six - three places ahead of Hounds of Love.

At number 20 is 50 Words For Snow with The Kick Inside - her first album - at 24, The Sensual Word at 26, The Dreaming at 37, Never For Ever at 38 and Lionheart at 40.

Official Charts Company chief executive, Martin Talbot, said: "Her new live shows have created a huge stir, but for them to help push her catalogue to make such a significant sales impact is further evidence of the love that the British public have for her music, from generation to generation."

More than 80,000 tickets were sold for Bush's 22 Before the Dawn shows at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

In 1978 Bush became the first female artist in history to go to number one on the Official Singles Chart with a song she had written herself - Wuthering Heights, which topped the chart for four weeks.

This week's new album chart is topped by Brighton rock duo Royal Blood with their self-titled album, which is the UK's fastest-selling British rock debut release in three years.

Ed Sheeran earns a 10th week in the top five with X at number two and US singer-songwriter Ariana Grande reaches a personal best of third in the chart with her new album My Everything.

Lilly Wood and Robin Schulz top the Official Singles Chart with Prayer In C while Maroon 5 are new at number two with Maps, the lead single from their forthcoming album V.

Last week's number one - David Guetta's Lovers On The Sun featuring Sam Martin - drops two places to three, while Taylor Swift is at four with Shake It Off and Nico & Vinz are at five with Am I Wrong.
