Subject: Hacker's Paradise... Nude Pics Stolen from "The Cloud"

Written By: LyricBoy on 09/01/14 at 6:59 pm

The latest story in the news is that somebody hacked into emails and photo libraries, and are posting authentic nude pix of Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande Latte, and Kate Upton (to name a few) on the internet.

Apparently these images were stolen from the "cloud backups" that these folks had with their nudie pics; it is suspected that they were on Apple iPhone cloud backups.  "The Cloud" is all the rage in the decade of the 2010's... but all it really is, is you storing your data on somebody else's computer.  In the 1970's we called this "Time Sharing".

Moral of the story folks... If you store your data (including selfie nude pix) on the "cloud", you are setting yourself up as a sitting duck.  Cloud storage servers are prime targets for hackers, and keeping your data there is analogous to sending your children to a war-zone military base to be "safe".  Why are cloud servers prime targets?  Because that's where the data is.

So glad I don't have an iPhone, not that I take pictures of that nature to begin with.  ::) I've heard the term "cloud" but never knew what it was. People need to be smart about what they do, especially now.

If you have an iPhone or iPad is there a way to NOT send anything to cloud or does it automatically go there?

I see this as only publicity for the latest Cameron Diaz film Sex Tape to be released this week.

If you have an iPhone or iPad you do NOT have to use the"cloud" feature.

This is why we have the internet, to view the nudie pics. ;)

Absolutely not. It's sad there are guys who don't make better use of it, and people who don't think better of uploading such material of themselves.

In this thread, we learn that services that promise convenience over security tend to result in security breaches.  If your data resides on a server that is not under your direct personal control, it can, and will, be leaked.  (It can leak even if it resides on a machine that is under your direct physical control, but it's considerably less likely than if you pick bad passwords and trust others with the security of your data.)

On reddit they're referring to this event as "The Fappening."

Yes, but you have to make several adjustments to kill it.  Apple makes things very easy to use, and part of that means that you lose control over where your data is physically located.  There are multiple places where data is cached on its way from your phone, say, to your desktop, or vice versa.

Meanwhile, here's part of how the hack may have been done.  Basically, if you can brute-force the password (and celebs aren't known for picking hard-to-guess passwords nor for using 2-factor authentication, and Apple's partially at fault here for not doing something as simple as configuring their service to lock users out after repeated failures to log in with a bad password), you can use a bit of software that downloads everything from Apple's mothership, and extract the pics from what was downloaded.  Naturally, it's a tool developed for law enforcement, and proves once again that if you build a system that can be lawfully compromised by law enforcement, you've also built a system with a back door ripe for exploitation by people who don't need no stinking warrants.

tl;dr: it's the fappening: Got wood? :)
