I agree about this year. I think 2015 will be an improvement from 2014 (it can't get much worse) and I think 2016 will be even better with the Olympics in Brazil. However, I don't think they will be the years of big change. Culturally I think they will be tied with 2013 and 2014 to be one distinct period (the core years of the 2010's). 2017 is the year that's going to be a change, for the simple fact that Obama will be out of office (I can't wait for that!)

Eh, it's possible.

2014/2015:

The midterm election...  :-X :-\\
Neil Young's Pono hi-res music player/service/store  8)
Honey Boo Boo cancelled
Craig Ferguson leaving in December

2015:

The first Jurassic Park movie since 2001
A Star Wars movie with zero George Lucas involvement
DC steps up its game
Washington, DC (hopefully) steps up its game
Final Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay Part II
Flying cars
Hover boards
Jaws 19 ( ;D I just had to say it  ;D)
Glee ends
David Letterman retires; either Colbert or Fallon will become the new King of Late Night.
Rock (possibly?) makes a huge comeback(?)

2016:

90s nostalgia hits the mainstream if it hasn't already -- Lionsgate Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot
Back to the Future musical
A "roots" Halloween movie/"reboot" that de-canonizes Rob Zombie (if nothing else) and bring back the Carpenter-ness of the original?
Hillary Clinton?

I think 2015 and 2016 are going to be big years of change too. Generally the middle of every decade is different from the beginning of the decade. I don't see much changing in Washington DC in 2015. Congress will continue doing nothing and wasting tax money investigating Benghazi and trying to repeal Obamacare for the 200th time. 2016 will shake up the White House. I don't see any of the Republicans becoming president unless the tea party conservatives get kicked out. New inventions and technology will be introduced.  I don't think music will change too much.

They were talking about flying cars and hoverboards on the news.

Yeah the aeromobil prototype looks cool, but it has wings so the car doesn't actually hover in the air, more like a small plane. Same as the hoverboards as they have to use magnets to get them to work. It's physically impossible for an object to hover in the air without some kind of force. Maybe in 1000 years they will discover something that makes it possible for objects to float in the air, like an invisible foce you can't see or feel, but for now it's impossible but the prototypes of the flying cars and hoverboards we have now are still pretty cool!  :P

Actually, I really think the next 2 years are going to have huge changes. There are going to be hoverboards, robot security guards, and possibly a female president or another democrat president. music is going to change from EDM to another genre. The millennials/Gen Y are going to have an huge impact on the world as the last members will graduate high school during that time. More baby boomers will be retiring. Social media is gonna be more bigger than ever. Gen Z will also have a large impact on the world as the early members will be in high school and they will be able to work, plan their future, and anything else that comes to mind.

All of these things are expected for 2015/2016. So I can see a lot of changes coming up. Mid 2010s are finally starting to look fun.

How big can it get?

It will eventually be so big that it will become ubiquitous. It will be everywhere you go without noticing it or needing a phone or device to use it. It will be a part virtual reality in everyday life where you have all your social networking information is literally in front of your eyes whenever you need it. If you want to look up information about someone you simply glance at their direction and results about the person will appear immediately in front of your eyes using fast online search. But this will will happen within the next 20 years.

I've been on this website since 2011, and I can assure you no one said this back then. No one expected 2013 to be different from 2012, and it wasn't, because 2013 was early 2010s. No one also expected a huge change in 2014 either, but we expected change since it was the mid '10s, and it happened. There wasn't a ridiculous amount of change, but enough to distinguish it from at least 2010.

I know, they always say that

No they don't...

Anyways, the "4" year of a decade is always more like the early years than the rest of the middle years. 2014 isn't any different. 2015 will be the last year to have any connection to the early 2010s, as with any "5" year and their respective decade.

Usually the second year is the last year to have holdovers from the previous decade. 2014 is just as much mid 2010s as 2016 is.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I never stated 2014 had 2000s holdovers. I'm saying that people will look back at 2014 and probably confuse it with the early 2010s. 2014 was fresh off the early 2010s as it was only the first year of the middle era. It takes time for the culture to grow and change. 2015 is only the second year. The early 2010s were only two years ago, so there will still be some holdovers. 2016 will be 100% mid 2010s, and the differences from the early years will be obvious.

Eras, like decades, are not cut and dry. They bleed into each other. Change doesn't happen overnight. 2008 changed a lot, but it didn't start that way. Late 2008 was pretty different, sure, but early 2008 wasn't all that different from 2004.  We just need to let time do it's job.

This year could see a complete shake up for...

Four of the world's biggest tech giants - Apple, Google, Intel and Adobe - have agreed to a new settlement of $415m (£273.5m) in an attempt to resolve a lawsuit. The US lawsuit alleged the firms agreed not to poach staff from each other. It claimed the alleged agreement prevented workers from getting better job offers elsewhere. The 2011 US case had claimed $3bn in damages on behalf of more than 64,000 workers at the four firms. The latest attempt to settle the case for $415m, which was filed in court on Thursday, comes after a US judge rejected a $324.5m settlement offer last year.

Things are starting to change. If you look at the iTunes charts, new songs are kicking out the old songs. We're in March, so we're at the end of the beginning of the year. The true 2015 is kicking in and 2014's influence is rapidly declining.

I think there will be another crash, somewhere 2017-2020.
China has a housing bubble, we all solved the financial crisis with pain killers, but did not solve the structural problems underneath; all debts are rising. Will debts ever diminish? Or are we letting it grow to more than 1000%? Is that even healthy? Stock markets keep rising, that's another risk.
We'll see  :-\\

Not true. Change always happens sometime in the beginning of the second half of a decade. I've always noticed it happens in the year ending with a six.

I've recently been listening to quite a bit of music from 1986, and late-'80s style hair metal and dance-pop became cool that year. Also, if you look at what was fashionable that year, the clothing wasn't all that different from the late '80s. Just watch any music video from 1986 for proof.

When it comes to the 70s, bell-bottoms began their decline that year and disco was already popular by then. There was no leftover hippie vibe that year, although that was probably out by 1974. I recommend watching the 1976 movies "Car Wash" (named after the song!) and "Carrie". It's a good way to get a look of the fashion trends of that year.

In the '90s, 1996 was definitely a real game-changer for fashion. Music also changed, but it still sounded very mid-'90s.

See? Afterwards not much changed until about 2001 when bling-bling became cool and shiny fabrics went out of style.

For the 2000s, it's too soon to say. But in 2006 things changed and electropop and skinny jeans became fashionable. Skinny jeans continue today, and electropop is out but electronic music is still in. 2005, however, is often times mistaken for the early 2000s.

Electropop did not become popular in 2006.... That was 2008 when Lady Gaga first appeared and rap turned electronic and dance oriented. There wasn't a single electropop song in 2006 other than Justin Timberlakes Sexy Back. 2006 had the same music and trends Emo, MySpace, flip phones, etc. 2008 is when the economy changed, the president changed, the music changed, fashion changed, and social media and technology started to change. 2006 was not full of changes especially compared to 2008.

The biggest change was skinny jeans! And I'm not just talking about celebrities. I distinctly remember skinny jeans becoming popular that year. It may have been different in Canada, but I'm an American, so I'm going by my experience.

Electropop entered the mainstream in 2006. It didn't explode like it did in 2008. It was already really popular in 2007. Lady Gaga didn't start it, she just released her music when it began it's cycle. It's true that 2006 was mostly mid 2000s, and the majority of the music could have been popular in 2004, but you could see it coming in hindsight. Here are some electronic-heavy songs of 2006:

1. SexyBack - Justin Timberlake
2. Me & U - Cassie
3. SOS - Rihanna
4. Everytime We Touch - Cascada
5. I'm N Luv - T Pain
6. My Love - Justin Timberlake
7. Bossy - Kelis
8. Hung Up - Madonna
9. Smack That - Akon
10. You - Lloyd

Only 10 songs, but it's a start. Electropop "officially" began in 2006, and went on from there. I don't know how many of these were popular in Canada, I'm just going by U.S. music.

Those songs aren't electropop. I think of Electropop as autotune and actual techno beats. S.O.S. is definitely not electropop and sounds mid 00s like something released in 2003. Those songs are similar to "Yeah" by Usher or Promisculous by Nelly Furtado, the distinct 00s sound. But not electropop like the 2010s which exploded in 2008 with actual autotune/techno/edm.

Another way to look at it is in 2007 Timbaland started the trend in the early part of the year, with "Give It to Me" and "The Way I Are" both being electro. They are hip-hop, but are also dance too.

Nobody knows. Maybe music, economy, fashion, technology, etc.

Most likely music in 2017 and economy in 2018. Fashion is already changing, which started in 2014. The more formal clothing of 2014 was very different from 2013 and it was less colorful. The dresses of 2010-13 were long, loose, and loud. In 2014, they became shorter and more muted in color. Here is a picture of early 2015 dresses (which were the same as those of 2014):

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/90/Mid_2010s_Dresses.JPG/1024px-Mid_2010s_Dresses.JPG

Men's polos in early 2015:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e8/Men%27s_Polo_Shirts_2015.JPG/1920px-Men%27s_Polo_Shirts_2015.JPG

I know for a fact that you would have been considered "boring" or "dowdy" if you wore any of those colors in 2013.

Anyway, I didn't see any objections from you about the fashion, so I must have convinced you about it. The fashion of the middle years of a decade continues to remain fashionable in the later years (which is why people consider the defining fashion of a decade to be the middle and later years, for good reason.).

I'm going to have to disagree. I don't think 2005 can be confused with the early 2000's at all, except maybe the first few months when 50 Cent was still popular. I think 2005 can relate more with 2008 than 2002, with the MySpace, emo, and scene culture. Some of the songs you listed are 2005 songs.

I understand why I thought this 3 years ago, but this decade was weird. There were some significant changes in 2016 but it wasn't huge and we have passed 2017 and are in 2018 now and there still aren't big significant changes now like I thought there would be at this point. This decade is slowly dragging on. At this point there may not be huge change until 2021 or 2022. So far the most changeful year this decade is still 2013 by a small margin. We have seen nothing like the big change of 2008 yet.

Looking back at 2014 now, I definitely don’t confuse it with the early 2010s. I actually consider 2014 as the peak 2010s year.

The 2010s can be split into two, and the first half of 2010 - 2014 can be considered one era and the second half 2015 - 2019 can be considered another one, more or less.

I don't think 2013 to now is a common era. The big common era is late 2008 to now. But 2013 and 2014 are most certainly distinct and different compared to today. 2013 to now is definitely not an era in any way. We have seen an arguably bigger shift in 2016 than 2013 though the 2013 shift was slightly more impactful to me but almost the same. There's no way 2013 to now is one era. 2013 and 2014 are WAY too different compared to today, especially 2013. Even 2015 is different. There was quite a significant shift in 2016 that changed many things.

I actually feel like 2016 will be seen as a transitional year to late 2010's culture once we are in the 2020's. I will admit. It did feel different from 2015, but I don't know if it actually felt different culturally or it's just because of my personal life. In 2015, I was only 13, still barely a teenager and still in middle school, still pretty immature. In 2016, I matured a little bit, started high school late that year, and got a little bit more "serious"

Looking back 2013 ad 14 did have a calmer feel than 2015 and 16.  Not that they were that different though.  Everything from 2013 up to today feels relatively similar.

2013 is linked more with the early 10's (and also with 2009) than it is with the late 10's.

I honestly feel like the difference between 2018 and 2014 is bigger than the difference between 2008 and 2004. Let's see where the second half of the year takes us.

I disagree with this.  I think 2012 was the last year that had a "2009" feel to it at all and even then it was on its way out.  2013-16 were similar in my opinion.

For the most part I agree, though in other ways I have to remind myself how long ago 2014 actually was.  Hipster culture was still on the upswing in 2014 and the progressive social justice warriors still had the upper hand in politics.  I think the radical shift back to the far right from the progressive years of Obama has given the late '10s its own distinct feel.

Thinking about this, I think the '10s have been a much more changeful decade than it gets credit for.  2011 seems like a different world compared to 2018.  I remember 2008 didn't really seem that far from 2001.  Sure, the technology had changed and the music was slightly more evolved, but the world of 2008 didn't look that much different compared to 2001.  On the other hand, it's hard to believe 2011 and 2018 are even in the same decade because they are so different.  About the only thing that was really consistent this decade is the technology.  I think the '10s saw less innovation than the '00s and saw technology more slowly evolve.

I think the opposite. The 2010s were very slow and consistent in terms of cultural change. If I heard a song from 2011 it may sound slightly dated but not a different world and I can wear clothes from 2011 too. You couldn't say the same with 2008 vs 2001. But I will also admit my age has to do with me percieving the 2000s to be super changeful as well. I grew up in the 2000s while in the 2010s I was already grown so there is a bias there on my side as well. But still, I do believe the 2000s were overall more transformative than the 2010s and the 2010s were very consistent like the 1980s were. I have a big feeling the '20s will be a big changeful decade especially towards the middle and end part (like the 1990s were).

The 1980s were not stagnant. The '80s I'd argue were more transformative than the '90s, and even debatably the '00s, either the '80s or '00s was the most transformative decade after the '60s. It was in the '80s when cable TV and VHS became standard, when music started to become commercialized thanks to MTV, when video games became an industry standard with the NES, when teens began listening to music portably with the success of the walkman, and even home computers started  making their way into homes. Plus, the fall of the Berlin Wall ending the Cold War at the end of the decade.

1991 was very different from 1998 from my memory.  The early '90s were basically an extension of the late '80s and 1991 was still a part of that.  The true '90s zeitgeist didn't come into its own until 1993 or so.  The '10s have been similar, with the early '10s being basically an extension of the late '00s.  The difference is the late '10s are even more distinct from the mid '10s than the mid '10s were from the early '10s.

If I were to be completely honest, I notice a lot more changes between 1990 vs. 1999 than 1980 vs. 1989. The 90’s IMO were definitely more noticeably transformative than the 80’s.

I always thought the gap between 2001 vs. 2008 was a lot bigger than the gap between 2011 vs. 2018. This is what a proper decade should look like. Also I disagree the '80s had more change than the '90s... Remember the internet? One of the biggest inventions of mankind. The 1990s was the most changeful decade in recent history because of the adoptation of the internet and home computing alone.

I would agree.  Technology has remained pretty consistent this decade (especially compared to the '90s and '00s) but other aspects of culture have changed significantly.

The culture besides politics have not changed dramatically since the start of the decade, not in an otherworldly way for sure. There have been some major updates in tech this decade though. VR and AR is fully available to consumers now and so is powerful superphones and smartwatches as well as computing power and cloud computing has become significantly more powerful. 4K curved TVs are also available among other curved devices and other tech developments. Autonomous vehicles are available to some people now and so are cars with built-in internet and digital setups. Smartphones look completely different now compared to 2010, looks like they are phones from different decades, and this is comparing smartphones, not even slider phones that were popular earlier in the decade. Heck smartphones from 2014 look completely different compared to smartphones today as well, all from the design to the internal specs and power. Smartphones and artificial intelligence and virtual assistants are big things now and these were not available earlier in the decade. So many tech changes this decade.

What I can agree on is the 2000s had way more tech changes that impacted society as a whole, and this is thanks to social media and the internet. The 2000s (and 1990s) were still overall more technologically changeful than the 2010s. Again, the 2010s resemble the 1980s in terms of changes in tech and everything else and the change was quite gradual this decade just as it was in the 1980s. The 2010s are like the modern 1980s.

As for technology, I think the past 2 years (2017/2018) gave us some cool stuff.

Mainly, I love paying for things with my phone. The minimum wage got jacked up really high, and now even the dollar store has a self-checkout. I love just picking up an item, tapping my phone and being on my way, it's really fast. There's never any lineups. Even when I went to the theatre, there were no cashiers – everything was automated, and there was a lady helping people with the ticket machines.

Even though Toronto was the first test market for UberEATS in 2014, it feels like it really took off this year. I love ordering food from the app and then having it arrive on my doorstep, no need to exchange cash, the delivery man just hands it over, bye!

A lot of chain restaurants have take-out parking spots. You order from the app, they tell you to come in 10-25 minutes, you show up, park at the spot and they hand over your food to you. I only noticed these this year :o

And of course, I never fail to mention how I can pay for my transit fares using my phone now. No more buying bus tickets, I hated that crap, especially when you'd run out and had to pay the full cash fare. Now I just tap my phone, it feels very futuristic ;D

Fair enough.
But what do you consider to be "recent history"? If you're talking the past 10 decades (1920s-2010s), the most transitional would be the 1940s, as World War II did bring us into the modern world, with the Nuclear Age, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the first computer (ENIAC), the first microwave, the rise of television, the rise of suburbia and the baby boom, and even youth culture, with Frank Sinatra being the first real teen idol, and even pioneering the concept album in 1946 with "The Voice of Frank Sinatra", plus the invention of the LP record in 1948.
Following in second place would be either the 1920s or 1960s, one of those decades was fully after WW2 and fully in the Television Age. The 1990s would rank at the very highest in 4th place in terms of how transitional they were, out of the last 10 decades (1920s-2010s).

In this context, I consider recent history anything after the 1960s. So the 1970s and onwards. I think the 1960s was the most transformative in the last 10 decades personally.

Okay, but just out of curiosity, why don't you consider the 1950s and 1960s part of the modern age? Both were post-WW2 and in the Television Age.

I wasn't denying that and that wasn't my point, I was just saying what decades I was referring to when I said recent history. The 1960s was a long time ago, 50 years ago. Not exactly "recent".
