Subject: Your Favorite Songs of 2014

Written By: ArcticFox on 01/15/15 at 9:12 pm

2011 through 2013 was like this curse for music: I only liked a few songs and the rest I didn't care for or I downright hated. 2010 was pretty good. I liked about half of the songs that were popular. 2014 was almost as good; I liked less than half of the songs, but I feel like it was overall a general improvement over the past three years. Here is my list, in no particular order:

1. Say Something - A Great Big World
2. Human - Christina Perri
3. All of Me - John Legend
4. Cool Kids - Echosmith
5. Rather Be - Clean Bandit
6. Blame - Calvin Harris (the only mainstream hit I like from him)
7. Ain't It Fun - Paramore
8. Come With Me Now - KONGOS
9. Magic - Coldplay
10. Midnight - Cold play
11. Waves (Robin Schulz Remix) - Mr. Probz
12. Sweater Weather- The Neighbourhood
13. Happy - Pharrel Williams
14. Boom Clap - Charlie XCX
15. I Don't Mind - Usher
16. Can't Remember to Forget You - Shakira
17. Fireball - Pitbull
18. Love Never Felt So Good - Michael Jackson
19. Sing - Ed Sheeran
20. Don't - Ed Sheeran
21. Afire Love - Ed Sheeran (It was a promo single that hit the Top 40.)
22. Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran
23. Make It Rain - Ed Sheeran
24. Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson
25. Yellow Flicker Beat - Lorde (The only song I like from her.)
26. Pills N Potions
27. i - Kendrick Lamar
28. Something in the Water - Carrie Underwood
29. The Hanging Tree - Jennifer Lawrence
30. Take Me to Church - Hozier
31. West Coast - Lana Del Rey
32. Best Day of My Life - American Authors (Good song, but a rip off of "It's Time")
33. Love Runs Out - OneRepublics
34. Bailando - Enrique Iglesias

Those are mine, how about yours?

There's a band called Magic!  You guys know them for Rude.  Canada knows them for more than just that.  Their 3rd single, Let Your Hair Down made #20 and I really like it a lot ...

The first song that comes to mind is "Stay With Me" by Sam Smith
Which has now been credited to Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne after a court battle, with the similarities to "I Won't Back Down". I still like the song.

^^^^ I like how you divide each sections into Electropop, EDM, Country, R&B/Alternative/Soul, Hip-Hop, Indie Rock, etc. so you could be real fair on evaluating each of the years for music, depending on which genres of music the person prefers individually.

Going by one per artist...

1. Hideaway / Kiesza
2. All of You / John Legend
3. Take Out the Gunman / Chevelle
4. Happy / Pharrell Williams
5. You're Mine (Eternal) / Mariah Carey
6. Rick Grimes vs. Walter White / Epic Rap Battles of History
7. Love Runs Out / OneRepublic
8. Sing / Ed Sheeran
9. Bang Bang / Jessie  J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj
10. Mission Statement / "Weird Al" Yankovic
11. Love Never Felt So Good / Michael Jackson
12. Am I Wrong / Nico & Vinz

As you can tell, based on my inclusion of comedy songs and songs technically from 2013 (but which peaked in 2014), I'm not exactly crazy about 2014 in music.  I'm sure I haven't dug into it nearly as deeply as ArcticFox has for gems, but I still think it was a pretty underwhelming year.

This song was recorded in 2013, but the music or album wasn't released until January 2014, so I don't know if this counts, but here's my favorite song of 2014.

I'd say my favourite song of 2014 was Danse by Mia Martina featuring Dev.  This made #29 in Canada, #94 in the UK and #38 on the US Dance Chart
(And yes, that is the same Dev who sang Bass Down Low and Like A G6)

My absolute favorites! 2014 had so many really great songs.

Such a brilliant song. The fact that it actually made it to #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 is amazing, as it is not radio friendly and it sounds like an alternative song that wouldn't even chart at all. It's so incredibly original. Few people can really appreciate how brilliant Lana Del Rey is.

Like many others, I despised this song when I first heard it but it grew on me and now I can't get enough of it!

The music video is extremely inappropriate, but this song is so good.

Like "West Coast", this song is brilliant, only it's catchier. I remember hearing it a lot in the summertime! It's so musically rich and exotic. It utilizes the accordion! It originally came out in 2012 in South Africa, I believe it was recorded in 2011. It was rereleased in America on contemporary hit radio stations in mid-April 2014.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qtb11P1FWnc
Such a soothing song from a very underrated album. It's possibly my favorite song by them, although there are many others competing for that spot.

I can name a lot more. I'll do that later. 2014 was a huge year for indie pop and rock.
