Subject: Finding Neverland falls flat

Written By: Philip Eno on 04/17/15 at 7:54 am

Harvey Weinstein's debut as a Broadway producer has fallen flat after critics failed to be wowed by Finding Neverland.

The show, starring Kelsey Grammer and Matthew Morrison with music by Gary Barlow, is based on the 2004 film and tells the story behind JM Barrie's creation of Peter Pan.

The show has gone though a difficult inception, having started life in Leicester in 2012 before Barlow and Eliot Kennedy were brought in.

But The Wall Street Journal said the music was "an endless string of skim-milk pop-rock anthems", while Morrison "is insipid as Barrie".

And The Guardian wrote: "Most of Barlow and Kennedy's songs are dull adult contemporary ballads, forgotten before they're even over."

Although the Hollywood Reporter was equally critical of the songs, it did point out the show is likely to be "critic-proof" so could still attract big audiences.

Does this mean Gary Barlow will return to X Factor?
