September 28th 2011 -- last time this date fell on a Wednesday -- this was the final day of the MLB regular season that year. Both of the Wild Card races had yet to be decided, although the Braves were leading the NL race for much of the season, with the Cardinals in hot pursuit; and the Red Sox were leading the AL race for much of the season, with the Rays in pursuit on that side.

But the Red Sox lost their game and the Rays won theirs; while the Braves lost their game and the Cardinals easily won theirs... due in part to the Sox' and Braves' inability to hold their respective leads in their respective games.

This might have inspired MLB to create a second wildcard, to be implemented starting the following year.
