Subject: Quintessential movie of the '10s (so far)

Written By: bchris02 on 02/02/16 at 12:55 am

I am going to say Guardians of the Galaxy.

Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens also could apply, but since they are part of franchises that span multiple decades, I think that disqualifies them from being definitive representations of '10s culture.

The Hunger Games series is another contender in my opinion, but I think Guardians of the Galaxy beats it out.

In response to OP. I agree with your opinion on Guardians of the Galaxy, being the top Marvel Cinematic Universe movie of the decade. It wouldn't be bad picking Avengers: Age of Ultron as well.

While Hunger Games might be the quintessential movie of this decade based off novels, like Harry Potter was in the 2000's.

The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (Swedish: Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann, UK title: The Hundred Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared) is a 2013 Swedish comedy film directed by Felix Herngren based on the novel of the same name by Jonas Jonasson. The film was screened in the Berlinale Special Gala section of the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.

The film was a huge success, having been screened in more than 40 countries and grossing more than 50 million US dollars worldwide, making it the third highest grossing Swedish film of all time, only beaten by The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Män som hatar kvinnor) and The Girl Who Played with Fire (Flickan som lekte med elden).

The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 88th Academy Awards.

I know this technically came out in the 00s, but it was at the tail end of that decade, so it was still in theaters for a huge chunk of 2010 and became ultimately most influential to the 2010s.

I am going to say Guardians of the Galaxy.

Director James Gunn and the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy, including Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista, are back filming the sequel to their 2014 box office hit.

I have to say it's very difficult to decide which film is the most quintessential. So far, it's Deadpool, The Avengers, Hunger Games, Emojis, Despicable Me, GotG, Star Wars and Frozen.

Everyone is saying Frozen, but what about the Despicable Me movies? ???

I may as well add this, too. It wasn't well-received, but it just feels so utterly '10s I had to mention it:

I should throw in this, too. It may be set in the late 80s, but it's easily the most successful horror movie in a very long time, and its sequel will presumably take place in 2016, anyway:

I've actually been struck by the fact that despite it being the highest grossing film ever made, it hasn't had a lasting, individual impact. Heck, people still reference Titanic, but before the other week, when the four (!) sequels went into production, when was the last time you heard someone talk about Avatar?

Avatar is significant because it not only influenced the look of several 2010s blockbusters, it also kickstarted the 3D IMAX fad that studios exploit to attract audiences to the theater.

Yes, but it did that in tandem with other filmmaking/commercial trends. I'm not saying it's insignificant, I'm just commenting on how the first movie to make $2 billion barely gets talked about anymore, especially in proportion to other films which have made less.

All of the above suck, sans Straight Outta Compton and Deadpool.

My current contenders for "quintessential" '10s film include The Hunger Games series, Interstellar, Frozen, Star Wars: TFA, and The Butler (representing the social justice angle of the Obama years).

I was thinking of listing Rogue One here, but I almost see that as the beginning of a new era in pop culture. I guess it doesn't help that I saw it on Jan. 1, 2017, but that's entirely on me.
