Subject: Definitive Year for Movies in the 2010's?

Written By: ocarinafan96 on 02/26/16 at 11:54 am

Since the decade is a little halfway over, I would like to look back on the major films that best represented decade. Also which year thus far has been not only the best, but the most definitive of 2010's culture on a whole when it comes to film?

2014.

Had Guardians of the Galaxy, Hunger Games Catching Fire, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Divergent, the Maze Runner, etc, all definitive 2010s movies.

While the year to define the decade may still be ahead of us, as of now 2014 is the most definitive.

Yeah 2014 was VERY Good.
It was the year when I had the 'Unlimited' pass for cinema screening, pay around £20 for a month and watch all you can.

It's probably between 2012 or 2013 so far, since those years had The Avengers, The Hunger Games, The Hobbit, Frozen, Gravity, This Is The End, Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Rises, Ted, 21 Jump Street, The Amazing Spider-Man, etc.

I'm surprised nobody picked 2015 yet. Last year was VERY strong with movies at least IMO. You had Star Wars Episode VII, Jurassic World, & Avengers Age of Ultron all in that epic year

2013, in my opinion.

* Frozen
* Catching Fire
* Thor:  The Dark World
* Iron Man 3
* Gravity
* American Hustle
* Pacific Rim
* Oz The Great and Powerful
* Man of Steel
* The Wolf of Wall Street
* Despicable Me 2
* Dallas Buyers Club
* World War Z
* Star Trek Into Darkness
* The Wolverine
* The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
* Fast & Furious 6

The year has a solid balance of pretty much everything that has defined the 2010s thus far.  Plenty of superhero flicks, a live-action fairytale blockbuster, popular action movies, McConaissance films, entries in the Fast & Furious, Despicable Me, Hunger Games, and Marvel Cinematic Universe franchises; and the indisputably quintessential animated movie of the decade so far, Frozen.

2015 is very close, thanks to The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Age of Ultron, Straight Outta Compton, Inside Out, Cinderella, Bridge of Spies, Pitch Perfect 2, etc.  However, the lack of a McConaissance film causes the picture to feel incomplete.

I wouldn't call those definitive years for movies of the 2010's. 2010 and 2011 were a continuation of late 2000's movies circa 2008 & 2009. The 2010 & 2011 movies of the 2010's is like the 1999 & 2000 for movies of the 2000's. There weren't really any decade defining movies yet. 2012 is when the cultural 2010's movies began, 2001 is when the cultural 2000's movies began.

and so far, I think 2010 was the blandest year for movies of the 2010's decade , most of it carried over from the late 2000's. Most of the good movies from that year were kid ones like Toy Story 3, Megamind, or Tangled. It had part 1 of the final Harry Potter movie, Iron Man 2 which was my least favorite MCU movie, Shrek Forever After which was terrible, Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader which was my least favorite of the series, it was nothing like Lion, Witch, Wardrobe or Prince Caspian. It had the Lightning Thief too, which I had so many problems with compared to the actual book. Not saying that 2010, or even 2011 were bad years for movies, it had some good ones, some bad ones, but it just wasn't original compared to the rest of the 2010's and hadn't formed its identity yet. It just carried over from the 2000's that's all. 2012-present has been a lot more entertaining and interesting since it's come up with original series.

Well, in that case, no wonder why both years felt a little bit 2000s for movies.

Even if you personally prefer 2010 and 2011, 2013-2015 definitely represent 2010s culture more circumstantially.  Like bchris02 said, too, the Harry Potter movies are far more representative of the 2000s than the 2010s.  I'd also associate Toy Story 3 more with the 2000s, just because it's basically regarded as the final film of Pixar's golden age; Inside Out's popularity has been more the exception than the rule for the 2010s.  In terms of animation, the 2010s have basically been dominated by the Disney Neo-Renaissance and Illumination Entertainment, with Pixar and DreamWorks still doing decently but not as well as they did in the 2000s, which they represent best.

Well, it's just that I don't find this decade to be good towards movies. Almost everything seems really overrated to me, especially Inside Out, Frozen, and Despicable Me (can't even believe that they're making a fourth movie out of it). Even with Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks, they were always defined more with the 2000s than this decade.

Yes but remember while these movies were released in 2013, most of them were popular  in 2014. Like Frozen for example was released in December 2013 so I consider it a 2014 movie because it got very popular in 2014 even though it's still technically from 2013. But there's no argument 2013/2014 were the best years. If we are talking about release dates only, then definitely 2013 was the best year for movies.

Frozen came out in November 2013 here in the US, so I still consider it as a 2013 movie, but you have a point though, and you still see Frozen merchandise everywhere you go today which will continue for the rest of this decade for sure. I think 2012 was a really good year for movies too, it wasn't the definitive year, it was just the first year of 2010's cultural movies. It gave us the first Hunger Games, the Hobbit, the Avengers, Ted, 21 Jump Street, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man. Although, I do agree that 2013 and 2014 are definitive years. Personally I think 2013 was the best year for movies of the 2010's decade so far, but I still think 2012 beats 2014 by the teeth of its skin though.

Take out the "haha" ;D, you know weren't laughing at me writing that post, you were seriously trying to lump Frozen with 2014 movies. It'll always be in the 2013 category to me. Should that mean Elf belongs with 2004 movies instead of 2003 despite it being a "Christmas 2003" themed movie? Frozen does have that Winter Wonderland style for late in the year movies when it gets close to Christmas!

As you can see, Let It Go peaked in April of 2014. That's the same time the entire Frozen craze happened and it lasted until the summer. I haven't even heard of Frozen until January of 2014. Type in "2013 movies" on google and Frozen will always pop up in the section no matter what, it doesn't do that with "2014 movies", and to answer your question in bold, no I'm not. This is a movie discussion, not a merchandise discussion or how long it was popular. It's reasonable that the merchandise sales for any movie or franchise is going to peak for a certain amount of time after the movie release. To be fair with how big of a hit Frozen was the merchandise still goes on strong today, but we're referring to movies here, and all I'm saying is that it's a 2013 movie, and yeah, I get that many hit movies and music that comes out during the last quarter of the year carry on throughout the next year on the billboard charts. I'm just saying that Frozen is still a 2013 movie and will always be, since it was released in November 2013. The first weekend or two for any movie is when it always makes the most money in the box office. All of what you said is true about the merchandise sales, but I have to disagree with Frozen being a 2014 movie though, here in the U.S. it will always be associated with 2013, despite the fact that the merchandise has been popular regularly since late 2013/early 2014. Overall, I still think 2013 is the definitive year for movies of the 2010's so far.

It was the last Pixar film in a long line of undisputed classics.  Pixar movies started to become weaker on average beginning with Cars 2, with Inside Out being the only exception.  People generally consider 1995-2010 to be the company's golden age, while 2011-present is their silver age.

I disagree with that last statement. While 2012 had a lot of really good movies, they were pretty much all blockbustsers. 2014, on the other hand, had much more artful and innovative films. Even the blockbusters (Guardians of the Galaxy) had some degree of technological innovation.

I can definitely respect your opinion on that, and Guardians of the Galaxy was one of my favorite Marvel movies of all time btw! I remember seeing Captain America Winter Soldier and Birdman those years too which were great. IDK man, 2012 gave birth to The Hunger Games, The Hobbit, and had the first Avengers movie of the MCU. Maybe it's just that I have more of a soft spot for that year then!

The movie was released in November of 2013 in most places I think.

2012 is my favorite movie year of the decade. 2014 is probably the most '10s so far.

My favourite was 2013 by far. 2012 was my least favourite. The most 10's so far is 2015 in my opinion. But how do you know what 10's is when the decade isn't over yet?

I notice how you love 2013 for everything. Not that I blame you at all. When were you born? I know the year, but what month?

I don't care about films. I care about graduating highschool, turning 18, going on a big vacation, etc. Which all happened in 2013.

I never said that. I'm already nostalgic for 2010 and 2013. But not 2011-2012 as those were bad years for me personally.

I didn't start the topic of 2013 being my favourite year though. I replied to someone who said what their favourite year was.

When it comes to big vacations your 2013 was like my 2011, but when it comes to graduating high school and turning 18 that was 2014 for me!  ;)
