Subject: New Theory: First half of 2016 has 2006 vibes and second half has 2008 vibes

Written By: the2001 on 05/04/16 at 10:37 am

First half has the same mid 2010s influences, while the second has an election with a new president.
HECK people on this board are reaching for a pop culture shift change like in 2008 lol

I don't think you can predict the future just with year numbers. Maybe there'll be a big shift in late 2016, maybe there won't. Personally, I don't see the big shift happening until either Tesla releases their Model 3 in 2018, or Google releases their self driving car in 2020 (will probably get delayed), and even then they'll take a few years to catch on. That's not to mention any other crazy, unpredictable events that could happen, like maybe North Korea dropping a nuke somewhere.

The 2008-09 shift was a result of everything coming together at once.  A generational shift as millennials were coming of age, the economic crisis, and the election of a new President.  I don't see the same kind of thing happening in 2016 to be honest.

That makes no sense. I know it's a theory, but it's obvious that 2016 has no similar vibes with 2006 and 2008. Just because we wanted a pop cultural change, that doesn't mean it's similar to those said years.

Okay, as much as I don't enjoy decrying instances of the other d-word, there is absolutely no reason why this statement needs its own thread.

Yeah. This thread also makes no sense. I mean who would thought up that 2016 had 2000s vibes, aside from OP?

A political shift, yes. But I don't think there would be a big pop cultural shift after Trump gets elected. I still think that 2010s culture would be the same.

Eh. I still hope that this decade's culture would be similar. I don't want Trump to be elected, but if this election is going to be Trump vs. Clinton, then we're slightly f*cked. Unless the electoral voters decide on Hillary to be the next president.

Blink-182, Sum 41, Green Day (before 2004), Nirvana, etc. Pretty much any late 90s/early 2000s band.

I like it already! There should be a scene where I force the secret service to do Pop Punk jumps like New Found Glory. Does Ted Cruz get an Emo fringe? There should be a mission where you have to raid his office to find out his secrets and you find a shrine to Justin Pearson with "emo fringes 4ever <3" written somewhere.

Let's not get carried away, that's probably going to a separate DLC.

I'm personally hoping we win the pure lawful ending. I can't settle for just true lawful ending!

Culture is currently on the site of the SJWs.  If Trump gets elected, it will likely shift to being on the side of the anti-SJWs.  LGBT acceptance for instance could start to roll backward in this country.

UNLESS people think that Trump is a bad influence towards American politics. I mean, there's no way that you can reverse LGBT acceptance, unless the general American population is majorly stupid. That said, I'm not sure if that's going to change the pop culture from this decade. If that's the case, then I would wish that I could go back to the 2000s.

Well, it's not about acceptance, it's about the Supreme Court nomination. There's one vacant seat and the court is 4-4. If Trump wins then it's bye bye to any social progress for almost two decades.

If anything the vibe of 2016 is similar to 2000, only darker. Donald Trump is the new George W. Bush, and the elections might have similar results (another recount in Florida).

Sorry to play the d-word, but I don't think decadeology has any predictive qualities. 2016 is 2016. You can't just say something happened in one year it's going happen in the next. Did 2007 have 1991 vibes?  :o it just doesn't make sense.

2014 had no resemblances with 2004. Those years were completely different at the time. Same with 1996 being similar to 2006. I never noticed any 90s resemblances that 2006 had, since we were just out of the 90s culture by then.

At most, you can trace similarities between two years that are extremely far apart in terms of whether they were transition and in which respects (i.e., rock music began to revolutionize, a new President was elected, etc.), but in all frankness, you can make these vapid comparisons between just about any two years.

Usually, for example, I see the 1995-1996 school year as being the height of mid-90s culture, during which things were basically in a state of equilibrium. However, I could also artificially compare the period to 2008-2009, an extremely transitional school year imo, under the premise that I was obsessed with the Drew Carey Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Resident Evil, and more people owning Windows 95 in April 1996 than in September 1995, in the same way 2008-2009 had some new stuff along the way like Lady Gaga and Sons of Anarchy. I could also say the onset of the Great Recession was similar to the government shutdown of late 1995, even though the two crises were of a completely different nature.

Ultimately, it's precisely these types of discussions, in which two years way apart from each other are baselessly compared to each other, that give decade sub-eras such a bad reputation in the eyes of the old school boarders here. It's one thing to reminisce or examine a specific period of time in itself, highlighting the critical turning points and other little tidbits that distinguished it, but it's totally another to simultaneously analyze two unrelated years just for the sake of comparison.

2004 and 2014 weren't anything like each other, and neither were 2006 and 1996.

I agree with the others that these kind of discussions were exactly why decadeology was banned in the old days.

If there was any legitimate comparison of a past year to 2016, I would say 1968.  In '68, cultural tensions were escalating rapidly at the height of the sexual revolution.  Nixon won on promising a return to conservative morality and hyper-patriotism, much like Trump is doing today.  You also had Southern conservatives still making a huge deal about segregation.  Today, you see the same people beating the dead LGBT rights horse.
