Subject: VH1 Classic rebranding as MTV Classic Aug. 1

Written By: ChrisBodilyTM on 07/26/16 at 11:01 pm

This Monday, August 1 (what better day?  8) )...

MNzS1Hk-sLs

VH1 Classic, which has served as a "ghost" to the Golden Age of MTV & VH1, will be rebranded as MTV Classic... 35 years to the day MTV launched.

The rebooted channel kicks off Monday with a chance to relive that first hour of MTV, exactly as it aired 35 years ago (original five VJs, original commercials, original technical goofs, etc.).

Soon afterwards, we're gonna see plenty of 80s, 90s, and probably 2000s music videos; as well as classic MTV original series such as Beavis & Butthead, Unplugged, Liquid Television/Aeon Flux, Daria, Yo! MTV Raps, classic Real World, classic Road Rules, classic Punk'd. They'll even heave early episodes of, ahem... Jackass and Pimp My Ride. All of the music videos blocks (Metal Mania, Rock Fest, 80s, 90s, VH1 Classic 120 Minutes , etc.)  will remain in tact, but rechristened. They will even add a block for TRL-era videos.

Let's hope they also have the original Headbanger's Ball, original TRL, Making the Video, etc. Maybe even MTV News archives.

#IWantMyMTVAgain

Pretty sweet deal. Maybe they can keep Behind the Music and That Metal Show for old times sake.

Great news, and certainly a much better commemoration compared to their 25th and 30th anniversaries! Now, I'd like to see a Nickelodeon Classic follow.

Well there is The Splat, which usually airs Nick's old shows from the 90s.

Speaking of "classics" affiliates of channels, I'd like to see a GSN classic someday, with all the older gameshows that GSN used to air when I first started watching it 15 years ago, as well as GSN's original shows of the early 2000s (Russian Roulette, Lingo, Whammy, et al).  Of course, there is the BUZZR channel, which is an American digital multicast television network that is owned by FremantleMedia North America...but they air the classic game shows (well, most of 'em).

I remember the first two being aired on Lifetime in the 90s... although I think they later moved to the now-defunct PAX network (which later evolved into ION).

"Hollywood Showdown" was on GSN in the early 2000s (although, according to Wiki, it actually premiered on PAX).

I watched them from the start. Lifetime then Pax. When I watched the last one I think it was on the TV guide channel. Back when it had most the screen as the guide and interview and fun fact type shows up at the top of the screen. I'm certain this one was on there too. This was long before they ruined it by having regular TV show repeats and movies and eventually no guide at all before finally taking it off completely.

I'm sure there will be some new interviews just asking up stuff about the history. But its supposed to be actual stuff that aired years ago. Not to dog on TRL cause the early years were okay, but I like to say the pre-trl years were what was great. Then it started to go downhill. Not success wise (quantity) but value and entertainment (quality.

Oh yes, they did, which I knew from having looked at TV listings on paper (i.e., in the newspaper or a TV Guide). Never got to watch 'em much, though.

I think so.

Even though I wasn't watching it during its early years (mainly because my household didn't have cable tv when I was growing up), I still know more or less what was on it in the early 90's because I read the printed TV listings and got an idea as to what kind of programming it aired. And like I said in an earlier post, I only got to watch it when I went to the home of someone who had cable (like a friend) or to a hotel. And I wasn't too familiar with much in the way of pop music during my childhood years. (But now I am!)

Anyway, I got a chance to watch the new channel this morning and they were showing a block of late-90s music videos, including Backstreet Boys' "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" and the Spice Girls' "Wannabe", both of which were big hits in '97.

Yo! Hip Hop Mix is really fun to watch, but some videos can be cringe worthy. I have no interest in watching non mid 90s-mid 2000s and a bit of Late 2000s songs.

They should just rename the channel as Viacom Classics, with shows from MTV, Comedy Central, Nick, and VH1 shows airing on the channel. Most of them would be from the 80s, 90s, and early-mid 2000s.

In my opinion, it started circa the Yo MTV Raps era.

Yeah, my mistake. Yo MTV Raps should be changed to BET Bits or whatever works and port the program to the network because it seriously needs it. MTV has way enough variety. God. Viacom striped BET of everything!
