Subject: The 80sness of the 2010s

Written By: aspireone on 04/26/17 at 12:56 am

While this decade is nostalgic for the 90s, I do feel like it is very 80s flavored.

I always thought that electropop was a bit 80s but what truly make this decade's music 80s flavored is the synthpop. This isn't even mentioning the many hits that are deliberate 80s throwback.  The fact that both the leading genre of the 2010s and the 80s is the same which is pop music is another parallel.

The usage of colored lighting in media (in particular, mid 2010s music videos) also has an 80s vibe with the greens, blues, reds amd especially the pinks ( watch Drake's Hotline Bling, This is what you came for, the Weeknd's Starboy or Ariana's Into You).

There's also an increasing number of  shows,  films and videos games with 80s-inspired scores.

This decade is nothing like the '80s.  The '80s were very lighthearted and didn't take themselves seriously which is basically the opposite of this decade.  The '00s have more parallels with the '80s.  This decade has been more like the '90s and the '60s.

Oh great. Does this mean that we can look forward to threads about the 70sness of the 1990s, or the 50'sness of the 1970s, and so on?  ::)

I agree that this decade's music does have an 80's vibe at times. But we really need to limit these types of threads. It's not entirely your fault, we kind of enable it to a certain extent. And we talk about decadeology a lot in other threads!

No decade owns colored lighting. The music in this decade isn't like the 80s. There was electronic music in the 90s and other decades too. It's more like a garbled mess.

While I agree the 2010s is nothing like the 80s, I wouldn't say the 90s were serious. Serious things happened in the 90s, like the L.A. riots, Oklahoma City etc., but the tone of the decade was rather sarcastic and carefree and about having a fun time in the wake of the U.S.'s triumph over the Soviet Union. The 90s were nowhere near as serious as the late 60s/early 70s or even anywhere near as serious as the 2010s. They were more like a calm before a storm.

As someone who actually appreciates the 2010's (think it's better than the mid 2000's even though it was my childhood) I can definitely see similarities to the 80's , colorful fashion and electronically influenced music.

THE 2000s is a mirror of the 80s

Most early 80s fashions came back in 2004 2005 2006

think Jessica Simpsons Public Affair Video, Stacys mom etc etc.
Even MTV bumpers and vh1 bumpers in the 2000s were 80s styled,
not to mention I LOVE THE 80s and Rock of Love, Surreal life

The 00's were nothing like the 80's, though. Fashion back then looked more the 70's with the shaggy wings hair and low-rider flair jeans and the style of music sounded like either a crappier version of the late 90's urban sound or a neutered version of grunge with Nickelback and those kinds of bands.

Watch bumpers from MTV in 2004-2006  they are 80s
Watch Bumpers from Vh1 in 2004-2006  they are 80s along with 80s stars in reality shows
Commercials back then had an 80s vibe to them

tons of songs then sampled things from the early 80s

So because a bunch of television bumpers of has-been channels had 80s-inspired bumpers that means the 00's mirrored the 80's? What? ???

I'd argue the style of commercials didn't change much from the 80's through 00's but that's another argument.

Doesn't mean the 00's were anything like the 80's just because they tried to force in some nostalgia.

It was not forced in was in almost all media, the whole yuppie vibe of the 80s was in the 2000s as well.
shows like CRIBS, pimp my ride, it was very 80s. The mid 2000s were a very colorful era. I was a teenager
during the mid 2000s and I remember a HEAVY early 80s vibe to them.

Fashion of the 00's was nothing like the 80's aside from what? Off the shoulder tops and upturned collars on polos? You must not know 80's fashion if you think faded low-rider flared jeans, trashy trailer park styles, shaggy wings haircuts and straightened long hair is "80's revivalism".

How is Pimp My Ride very 80s? It had a lot of cultural references from not just the 80s, but also the 70s and early 90s as well. Hell, they even make the cars more modern within the episode's recording. That alone doesn't make it very 80s.

Ok? So people wore legwarmers and off the shoulder tops. That doesn't say anything because overall the trends of the 00's were nothing like the 80's. The first photo you posted is exactly what I'm talking about. How does that give off an 80's vibe!? Those flared faded low rise jeans look more like 70's revivalism. Those clothes I pictured were from the early 80s flashdance era and being worn alot by people in the mid 2000s
It was everywhere

Coupled with the 80s nostalgia I mentioned, what arent you getting?

not all of the 2000s had people wearing 80s inspired clothing, but it was the basis for a lot of trends
LEG WARMERs with neon colors ARE 80s lol  I think you should closer inspect some of the styles of the early 80s
because you will see how the correlate to some of the trends of the mid 2000s

THE point of me posting the photos is showing you that in the 2000's people wore
80s inspired clothing,  the tops, the legwarmers with that color, the bow in the hair
the way lohan is wearing it, THAT IS EARLY 80S

do I need to spell it out for you?  80s wasn't the trend EVERYONE WAS WEARING,..... but
alot of people were wearing styles like the 80s flash dance era. the makeup style, the feathers in the hair,
the choice of neon colors.

LEG WARMERS were sold on infomercials during the 80s, looks at some 80s music videos on youtube

NEON COLORS,  NEON COLORS ON THE MAKEUP, SALT N PEPPER LOUD COLORs on the clothing.
HYPER COLOR. the waist belt around the dress. THAT IS EARLY 80s

anyone on inthe00s reading this knows what early 80s fashion is, and the fact that you could not see

You're ignoring what I've posted and instead focus on things that support your view point. I already said "yeah, sure, some people wore 80's fashions but overall the main trends of the time did not give off that vibe" and you get upset and resort to yelling and screaming like a baby. I actually know a lot about fashion. You, on the other hand, need to educate yourself on the subject before stepping up to a master like myself. ::)

FALSE,  DIOR with Slimane at the helm as creative director is the one

Guys, we still never clearly established what specifically changed in late 2006, nor have we scientifically settled the debate about whether 1992 was an 80s year or a 90s year. To quote Marc Anthony, I need to know.

the2001, you need to stop trying to derail the discussion towards your sh!tty rigged quizzes and we need to get back to scientifically deducing the 80's-ness of 1992 and calculating the changes in late 2006.

Why would I tell you? You came up with all those lies about Pitbull and cannot be trusted. So many tall tales.

Besides, Danny Elfman is here and he wants to study the decades with us.

As someone who actually appreciates the 2010's (think it's better than the mid 2000's even though it was my childhood) I can definitely see similarities to the 80's , colorful fashion and electronically influenced music.

Yeah same. Especially the early 2010s.

I'm not seeing this at all. The closest modern era to resemble the 80s is the mid-late 00s when the 80s revival was in full swing.

I agree that this decade's music does have an 80's vibe at times. But we really need to limit these types of threads. It's not entirely your fault, we kind of enable it to a certain extent. And we talk about decadeology a lot in other threads!

Well EDM and Electropop was very popular throughout the entire decade, idk why people said those genres of music left when they never stayed off the charts for too long.

Electronic music was big in the 2010s, people took things seriously but that only because they cared

Hip Hop Fashion was also big.

Kanye brought in those ugly muted colors oversized sweatshirts in the mid 2010s, specially 2016. I think the line up was called “Ye” and then after that Billie Ellish popularized “OVERSIZED” everything in the 2019

Funny how that evolved from 2010
