Subject: What were you doing on Decemeber 31, 2009 going into January 1, 2010?

Written By: bchris02 on 09/04/17 at 1:40 am

For me, I spent it at Closet Nightclub in Charlotte NC.  It was a relatively new gay nightclub in Charlotte that played EDM and pop and it wasn't as crowded as I had hoped or expected.  At the time, being freshly out of the closet I loved going to nightclubs a little more than was probably good for me.  It was a bit of a let down that the club wasn't super packed but I had fun anyways.  12:00 came and everyone went to the dance floor and confetti dropped and then everyone danced to Bad Romance by Lady Gaga.  By about 1:00 or so we leave the club and go back to my place.  We smoke a little and then he asks me to be his boyfriend.  He was the last boyfriend I ever had and that relationship only lasted until Valentine's Day of 2010.

Incredible to believe that it was almost eight years ago! I was 10 years and 9 months old at the time. I went to the harbour in my local city (Wollongong) with my grandparents and older cousin. We saw the 9pm fireworks there. Shortly after that, we dropped my cousin back to his house (he lives in the same suburb as my grandparents) and I stayed at my Grandparents house overnight. My Mum was working nightshift and my Dad was out with friends, so that's why I was at my Grandparent's house.

The funny thing is, my Grandparents normally go to bed at 9:30 or 10:00, but I managed to convince my Nan to stay up until midnight. My Grandparents were only 62 and 60 years old at the time, but they have always gone to bed early. My Grandad still decided to go to bed at 10pm though. :P Even though we went to bed only a couple of minutes after midnight (by that point, my Nan was already falling asleep), it was still a good NYE.

I was 18 but still in my last year of high school. Thus, I spent New Year's at home with my family. The only thing I remember from that night were my drunken neighbors going out onto the porch at around midnight and acting rowdy.

It rarely snows in Ireland but it did this December/January. It was a very cold winter and the first time it snowed since 1999! I remember building a snowman at night in my front garden at this time and then seeing it melt the next day.

I went to Banff with family and friends. We stayed there overnight. We watched fireworks and at the stroke of midnight there was a drunk guy shouting "Yeah 2010!!!" outside on the street. It wasn't super exciting, that New Years actually feels like yesterday. However it's sometimes sad looking back because one of my mother's friends who were with us that night passed away from cancer. I remember thinking it was cool that the way we pronounce the years will change so we say "twenty" instead of "two thousand" and I heard a news anchor say it and thought it was cool. And I also thought it was cool there were so many features and specials on TV saying "The best of 2000s" or "The 2000s edition" looking back at moments from the decade. That's when I realized we are really entering a new decade and started to get interested in all of this decadology crap.  :P

Over the years, we have always celebrated at our home, we never visited family and friends, there always came to us.

Though my parents were asleep early that night, I stayed up late to watch the clock strike midnight in San Diego. During the hour leading to 2010, I was looking at old photos of me from the past few years, seeing how much I had grown. Because the New Year's celebrations are always biased towards the East Coast, I sort of just celebrated on my own, watching the clock, sort of going yay once the 2010s had officially begun.

Sounds like you had fun :)

As I said in the "how old were you on the 1st of January 2010?" thread, my cousins were staying over at my place for the holidays. We saw the fireworks from my backyard and then we went out and had some Chinese, and then walked around the neighbourhood for a bit. This was when I lived near downtown Toronto. Miss that place!

I had a feeling that night was going to be a good night, because that song was playing a lot at the time, lol. I was at a bar in Tokyo. The years I lived there were some of the best years of my life.
