It's now official, Toys R Us has thrown in the towel.

They have indeed filed a Chapter 11 case under the United States Bankruptcy code.  :\'(

They used to be the biggest toy store for quite a long time and now they're packing it up and calling it a day. :(

Also, as I explained in the other thread, the fact they're filing Chapter 11 rather than Chapter 7 means there's hope they'll still be around afterwards.

Toys R Us has confirmed plans to shut "at least" 26 of its stores in the UK, putting up to 800 jobs at risk. The toy chain said the closures would start in spring next year and that there would be "no disruption for customers" over Christmas and New Year. Managing director Steve Knights said the chain's "warehouse style stores", which it opened in the 1980s and 1990s, had become "too big and expensive to run in the current retail environment". Toys R Us has 106 stores in the UK.

Did they used to give away free calendars at the checkout of your Toys R Us? In mine, they did. I remember getting a Nintendo calendar for (December 1999 and) 2000 :D

No need for me to buy any games for myself. My Atari 2600 is still going strong.  8)

If they're still televising ads then they probably intend to stay in business after the bankruptcy proceedings are concluded.

That's actually a good thing. It means they're not going to be simply selling off the business.

The stores in the UK will remain open, but there will still be a chance of a sudden closure.

You may know better than me if you're in the UK, but in the US at least, bankruptcy administration means that the business is receiving rolling credit and keeping the business open to try to get solvent again.

I am not up on the law of administration, but it seems from reports on the radio, keep the stores open as long as possible, in case a company wishes to take over running it. Toys R Us did have bad sells over the Christmas period and failed in asking a lower rent offer on the land on which landlords own.

I studied American bankruptcy law in law school because I wanted to enter that practice area. I’m not saying I’m definitely right because I don’t actually know what the court ordered in their case, but this does not necessarily mean the end for Toys R Us.

All are hoping for a take over, but more news announced, their had to pay a £15m VAT bill, and was hoping the Christmas period would help it out, but bad sells put an end to that.

btw, I am only a layman when it comes to law.

Canadian branches still open and profitable, which was welcome news! But there are concerns that after all the administrative costs from Toys R Us USA are transferred to Canada, the stores may not be so profitable.
