Subject: What will the 2020s be like?

Written By: Milk on 11/23/17 at 11:34 am

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm extremely curious. This decade has been a rollercoaster and now we're only 2 years away from it ending. Will the political climate change? Will we go back to a more conservative culture like the 2000s? What will fashion be like? Music? Hit me with everything you got.

Yes

I could see the political climate shifting to either (a) libertarian or (b) progressive populist.
Think Gary Johnson and Bernie Sanders respectively.
I do NOT see more of the same old, same old.
The dichotomy is bound to change.

The 2020s will be one short transition from the Trump 20s (the year 2020 to possibly January 20th of 2021) to the time of his first or second successor is in office. Trump era TV and internet shows (i.e.- Mr. Robot, Empire, This Is Us, and Stranger Things) will all be gone, going off the air, or past their expiration date (their jump the shark moment). One of the most popular shows of the early '20s will be Riverdale. The world will move on to '90s and 2000s nostalgia. '90s party outfits and supplies (Hip Hop party outfits and supplies) will replace '80s theme party decorations and costumes at Party City. The Power Rangers and live action Disney movie series will be to the 2020s what the Transformers movie series has been to this time. When the mid or late '20s hit, not only will we be closer to the '30s, but period pieces set in the 2000s will emerge. Aside from that fact, children and teens of the 2010s will start to become nostalgic for the '10s. Of course, there will be lots of sequels to films like Boss Baby, Puss in Boots, and Black Panther, but they will not be as good as the first films to "2010s kids". Speaking of the Black Panther, the 2020s will belong to second-tier and little known DC, Marvel and independent superheroes. Sadly, the Justice League and Avengers will lag behind them in the future. I hate to say it, but we'll see more self-serve kiosks, driverless vehicles, and medical robots in the 2020s. Most of the general public will be subservient to robots for their survival before 2029. The defining music artists of the 2020s will be Meghan Trainor, Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, The Chainsmokers, and Alessia Cara. The rising music artists of the 2020s will go on to be the top artists of the 2030s. As for fashion, I have no clue. You will still see people wearing Social Justice Warrior shirts, exercise clothes, Tribal leggings, and skateboard clothing brands at the start of the '20s, but the 2020s will end on a different note.

Basically, in the '20s, everyone will be building on what was done in the 2010s and anticipating what's still to come.

I don't see the Chainsmokers remaining that relevant after 2022. Or Sheeran, for that matter.
I think we will see a new wave of musical artists and groups, mostly in the "electronic" field. The EDM sound will evolve and trance might be big again.
"EDM punk", someone hinted at the possibility of "EDM punk" rising to prominence. This could happen.
The Roaring 2020s won't be a carbon copycat of The Dabbing 2010s. I'll assure you that.

The way I see it:

1999-September 10,2001 > The rest of the 2000s and the '10s combined

The '80s < 1990-1992 >1999-September 10,2001 > 1993-1998, 9/11/01-NOW

I would end that era at September 15th, 2008, and create a new era that spans from 9/15/08-today. 16 years is way too long.

There will be inescapable songs of every music genre sung by robots on the radio bringing us into a brand new era of music. Single and ready to mingle? No problem! You can bring a good-looking robot with you that will do more than your ex can. He'll bring you roses, make your bed, do your hair, makeup, stay faithful, give you nice kisses, buy you food and clothes. Human-robot marriage will be a real thing! Fashion will include wearable technology clothing where a big touch screen will be shown on the front of your torso. Cashiers will wear this so customers and shopper can self-check. The cashier will poop out the self checkout paper list. Cars and even flying cars will be a thing of the past, thanks to teleportation you can say a code in your head and you'll be at your designated place in an instant! Stay patient! We have 768 days, 110 weeks, 25 months, 18432 hours, 1105920 minutes, and 66355200 seconds until this all happens!

I think the very early 2020s will be similar to the late 2010's, and a transition may happen sometime 2022. I think it will be different especially the late 2020s

No two time periods are alike. In this time we're living in (the late '10s), seeds are still being planted for the 2020s. When we're in the 2020s, seeds will be sowed for the 2030s. The 2020s will not belong to Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, Sofía Vergara, Jim Parsons, Beyonce, Selena Gomez and Katy Perry like the '10s do, I guarantee you that. I expect that by the end of the year 2020, we will have moved on completely to the new actresses, directors, actors, musicians, and authors of this time (i.e.- Meghan Trainor, Ariana Grande, the singers from One Direction, Laverne Cox, and Cardi B).

Meghan Trainor hasnt had a hit in a year and I don't see anyone talking about her lol
She has no star power or any kind of fan base.

The reason why she had 2 big songs was because she was a writer for Sony/atv

2020s in culture

Music: Revival emo scene, EDM with bots, a whole new generation of Hip Hop stars and a lot of new experimental music genres made on Internet
Fashion: 2000s clothing is back, colored hair is mainstream among adults, young people like to imitate hairstyles of popular youtubers and video game characters
Video Games: AR and Esports are huge man! Gaming companies such as Razer or Valve have an important role in technology industry, GTA 6 break all records with the hugest map ever seen, there a great amount of indie games with a lot of great innovations, AI characters
Films: Cinema is huge as today, until late 2020s where Hollywood start to lose popularity due to new entertaining industries (AR and VR). Netflix, Amazon, Disney and Apple have a great rivalry in streaming services

Soon 2020s in technology...

I think the '20s will be the bridging gap between the internet culture we know and love and are used to today (smartphones, apps, social media, etc) and a brand new era in internet culture we cannot comprehend or understand today that will explode in popularity in the '30s which will be the next big thing. Either way, the internet will play a big role in our lives next decade and all of the decades to come after that.

Did you see the Amazon GO store they opened in Seattle? There isn't even a checkout in that store. You just pick up what you want and leave.

More common in the suburbs will be stores akin to the Amazon Fresh Pickup. You order your groceries online, but you drive to the store where they put the groceries in your car and you drive away.

There's no way those artists will still be relevant in the next decade, and Beyonce is way past her peak (that was the 00s).  Most of them you mentioned have already superstar status being Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, The Chainsmokers and the singers of One Direction. I agree with Rainbow on Meghan Trainor. She has only had 3 songs that made the charts, and that was 2-3 years ago. She hasn't made anything in almost 2 years. As for Cardi B, she may be getting started; however, I have a feeling that she will not last long in the music scene.

I'm a grocery store cashier and a lot of customers have expressed to me how much they dislike self-checkout, to the point where they'd rather wait in line to be checked out than use self-checkout. I guess I can't really blame them, because self-checkout can be a pain, but they're also really convenient when people use them during a rush so our lines won't be so backed up.  ::)

I'm of the same opinion. Every time I use the self-checkout I need to rescan each item 2 or 3 times before it finally registers, and I have to call on the help of staff to get it working when something inevitably goes wrong. What's even the point if I have to do that?  ::)

The money will be on your phone, using apps such as Google Wallet and Apple Pay. They were deployed in Canada this year. Not all banks support them yet unfortunately, but it's coming.

And what if you lose your phone? Then you're out of luck without cash or other money. I will not be using mobile pay ever. I don't feel comfortable with it or trust it. The chances of fraud will sky rocket too.

If something goes wrong when self-checking, a member of staff still has to be called over.

KEEP THE CASHIERS!

problem is some people these days don't like waiting on-line for an available cashier so they wind up getting out the quicker way by self serve check-outs.

C'mon, have you ever in your life actually lost your phone and didn't recover it? Losing a wallet full of cash is way more likely. ;D

Chance of fraud is lower. You can't fake fingerprints. Two-factor authentication is unbreakable. A simple password (most online banking at the moment) or no security at all (cash) is much more risky.

Chance of fraud is always higher when transitioning to digital currency. Anyone can find a way to hack it, but not everyone can steal your cash that is with you. Also yes I have lost my smartphone on the bus a couple of years ago. I did recover it but it took 5 days. Cash will always win for me. I always use cash to make purchases, never use credit or debit and most certainly never use mobile pay. I don't trust it at all.

How can it be hacked if you have two factor authentication? They would need to

1) steal your phone
2) get passed your phone security (impossible if secured by fingerprint, doubly impossible if you know how to brick it remotely)
3) know your Google/Apple password.

At that point stealing a wallet is much easier.

Also, if you're a student you should really start paying your bills with credit card and building your credit history while you don't have any credit card fees. It will pay down the road when you need a mortgage or a car loan and you have a good credit history. You'll pay a lower interest rate.

I don't get how your wallet is less likely to get stolen than your phone. Then there are the many added security features on top.  ???

You can't pay for things like Uber,  AirBnB or Amazon in cash. The only reason I carry cash is for hot dog stands and Asian restaurants. ;D But with eMoney transfers it seems those days might soon be behind me.

That money isn't any more 'real' than the money on your computer screen. Look at the demonetization programme in India. The government can consider your cash invalid any time it pleases.

You guys are cray. The reason we rely on smartphones is because they're superior, point blank. It's not just to impress our Snapchat followers ;D

I'm stoked to get Google Wallet/Android Pay hopefully sometime next year. It's better than online banking. With an open API and as a full time nerd, I can budget more effectively and earn more money. Imagine having an app that tells you exactly how much you receive in tax deductions the more you pay into your RRSP (Canadian equivalent of 401k) and an estimate of how much that investment will be worth once you reach retirement? I bet you'd save much more into retirement while also maximizing your enjoyment of life at the moment. You can even automate the entire thing. That's just one example. When you have an open API the possibilities are limitless.

Yes but people will shorten it to just '20s. It will be the first time since the 1990s it will be normal to shorten the name of the decade (nobody says tens). I'm excited too.

Personally I believe traditional supermarkets will still be around. Many people will still be more comfortable using them 10 years from now rather than that proposed store. I don't see them going away. Maybe some stores like that may be around, but you will definitely find me shopping the old faahioned way down the grocery aisle and paying for my purchases with cash in a traditional checkout lane.  ;D

The repeal of Net Neutrality laws in the US might cause the same thing to happen around the world like a trend. Perhaps the 20s will be internet-less? It could something only wealthier families can afford. I hope not though ;D.
