Subject: Does anyone else think 2013 was very transitional?

Written By: Rainbowz on 11/25/17 at 10:05 am

Inspired by a thread from PerC

I feel like 2013 was the most transitional year of this decade so far. That was when vine was released, the music was starting to change to a mid-2010s sound especially by the end of that year, I've noticed more teens started to use Instagram and Vine more than Facebook, it was also when artists like Ariana Grande and Lorde started to become more popular and the electropop from the late 2000s/early 2010s were on their way out. I would also say 2013 was the first year where gen z influences started to kick in.

No, I don't think 2013 was the most transitional year of this novennium. That honor belongs to 2016. 2013 was the 1992 of the 2010s. 2013 had so much incoming mid '10s culture (i.e.- Steven Universe, the music of Ariana Grande, and Henry Cavill as Superman) that it felt like we were almost living in the mid 2010s by the end of that year.

Actually I think 2013 was very transitional. It was the beginning of the Mid-10's culture, and sadly most of the change was not for the better. I thought of 2013 as the new 1997 (in an equal but opposite kind of way). Instead of transitioning into a happy, light period full of Europe based electropop, we were transitioning out of it for a darker period. What makes them similar is that they were the beginnings of the second terms for a Democrat president. 2016 is debatable as far as how transitional it was. Overall I felt like it was part of the dark Mid-10's period, and in fact the peak/climactic point of it.

2016 the late part felt like the climax that led to Trump winning in November

I don't know if I would call it the beginning of mid '10s culture.
The last seeds for the mid '10s were planted in the year 2013 (so it was beginning to feel more like start of 2014 by the end of '13), but we were still living in the early '10s.

I agree.

It felt mid 10s to me by early 2013.

Yes, 2013 was very transitional indeed. A lot of it was coming in in 2012 as well, especially in terms of aesthetics. I was watching a YouTube video the other day, uploaded in early 2013, and the 2010s hipster aesthetic was already 100% there.

I remember reading a meme a few days ago about nobody has truly felt alive since the December 2012 "apocalypse". They may have a point.

How could that be when Rick and Morty was not even on the air yet?

For me it wasn't until summer of 2013. "Clarity" by Zedd was the last of the Euro-EDM. Music started to become more teen pop and trap. Fall of 2013 was pretty much same as 2014 (bad time in my personal life, so that's why I don't care to remember the music).

Good point. Rick and Morty is like the South Park of 2013.

Yes, absolutely. 2013 was the most transitional year this decade. Now it wasn't the most transitional year in the last 20 years, that title goes to 2008 or 1998. But yes, 2013 was a big transitional year and even bigger than the transition of 2016, culturally speaking.

No to me it didn't. It felt like the early 2010s up until late 2013. 2014 was the first full mid 2010s year. 2013 was very transitional, especially the summer and fall season.

Yes, exactly. It was still the early 2010s up until late 2013.

Hipster aesthetic started in 2011, it is not a mid 2010s thing. The transition to the mid 2010s was in 2013.

2013 and 2016 were the two main transitional years this decade so far. Maybe 2011 as well but 2011 was more a minor transition that year and more technological over cultural. 2013 was by far the biggest. But none of these years were super big changes, they were transitions but nothing huge compared to like 2008 so that's why this decade has felt very consistent. That's why I say certain things still feel the same since like 2009 even today.

It was the start of a new period. Music started sounding bland and guys stopped wearing their hair long. The pastel colour hipster aesthetic took over as well.

Its always at the 3rd year within the decade. Haha A traditional year, no doubt. 2013 was also the last year the internet had good atmosphere.

In MLB it was; the Houston Astros switched to the American League that year, thereby making interleague play necessary for the entire season.. and making all six divisions equal (at five teams apiece!).

I mean, one of the top hits of that year had large hashtags popping up on the screen every couple of seconds lol. It was definitley more like mid-10’s

Hashtags were getting wildly popular at that time, that's for sure!

Interesting you posted this.  I was thinking just yesterday that I feel like I died in 2012.

How are hashtags mid 2010s? They started to get popular in 2012, which is clearly early 2010s. Hashtags are not mid or early or late... They are simply 2010s, part of the core decade's culture. And no, 2013 was not mid 2010s. It was prodominitely early 2010s and it was a transitional year. 2014 was mid 2010s, not 2013. Late 2013 started mid 2010s culture.

Good internet atmosphere died around 2010, if we're talking about YouTube at least. It was around 2010 when YouTube started going downhill.

Oh, by mid-2010s I just meant peak 2010s culture because those were peak 2010s years IMO :). I didn't mean hashtags were a strictly mid-2010s thing or anything.
It was definitely a transitional year.

2013 was a very unique year. I remember this year thinking how pop culture could go in any direction and how early '10s culture got very stale. It went towards the mid '10s direction around the summer and autumn of that year. The culture was quite unique with the disco fad and the type of music that was popular. There were a lot of changes. I still look at 2013 as one of the quintessential years of the 2010s. Not only was 2013 the best year of the decade in terms of pop culture, but it was also favourite year in my personal life as well. I really loved 2013.

Here's a video I found that summarizes the year:

2012-2014 are the most iconic years in The 10s, many pop artists became famous in those years (Imagine Dragons, Lorde, Macklemore...) especially EDM scene had its climax in 2014. Also 2013 was the year which the word “meme” became mainstream, including Harlem Shake and What Does The Fox Say.

I think 2012 is the transitional year of the decade, but 2013 is the most iconic
