Subject: Does anyone else think 2016 was VERY transitional?

Written By: ofkx on 12/20/17 at 1:38 pm

I think that 10 years from now, 2016 will be considered a very transitional year in the 10s. It was like the climax of the 10s, and everything we're experiencing right now is the aftermath.
Thoughts?

2016 kicked off the new era when Trump was elected

I strongly agree with both of you. I hesitate to subdivide culture merely by decades because of how radically things can shift like they did in 2016.

It was very changeful especially the second half of the year.

I personally didn't see any transition in 2016, and I probably won't until this decade is over. 2016 still feels like yesterday.

Yeah I agree it’s still pretty recent. But with everything that happened last year, the atmosphere doesn’t really feel the same as it did in 2015.

It was transitional politically, but everything else was still the same.

I agree.  I didn't see much transition in 2016.  2016 was still a very 'Obama' year.  Highly polarized between the alt-right and the SJWs but the SJWs had the edge and overall culture was socially liberal and trending moreso.  Music was solidly and distinctly mid '10s.  Dancehall and a slight electropop resurgence also gave 2016 a bit of it's own flavor musically.  2017 on the other hand has been a bigger transition, at least from my perspective.  Culture has shifted to become more socially conservative.  There is a backlash against SJWs and socially progressive causes.  The alt-right seems to be leading society right now.  Hipster culture dominated 2016 and now seems to be waning.  Music has become more diverse and is in the midst of a transition.  2017 is the first year that is really starting to feel distant from the early '10s.

Maybe this is just me, but I think 2017 is the real transitional year and the year that I will look back on as being the last hurrah of the core '10s.

Yup, 2016 was very transitional. Not just politically, it was transitional musically and culturally as well. It was just as much as a transitional year as 2013 was. Maybe slightly less but I felt the transition only once we were in 2017 and looking back. 2015 feels fairly distant now. We are definitely no longer in the era of 2014 anymore.

I agree too. I think 2017 is more transitional than 2016 was. Just like I felt that 2009 was more transitional than 2008 while most people on here considered 2008 to be transitional (only in the opposite direction, going from the conservative culture under GWB to the liberal culture under Obama). 2016 was still part of, and in fact the peak of, the core mid-10's era.

2017 and 2016 are relatively similar but both are different from 2014 and 2015. 2016 was a big transitional year with Brexit, Trump, different music sound, new trends like Pokemon Go, and other changes.

Imo, 2015 still feels similar to today, however 2014 doesn't.

I agree with this completely.  I think hipster culture and SJW culture peaked in 2016.  I think 2008 is a good comparison.  I consider 2008 to be the end of an era as opposed to the start of a new era and I feel the same about 2016.  I think a lot of that depends on how much weight you give to the established culture vs the new incoming culture.  To view 2016 as the beginning of a new era, you have to ignore the established status quo that was in place at the time.

Yeah, when Brexit happened you could already tell the world would change forever, and then Trump won the electoral college and gut-punched the mid-2010s.

2016 had some mid '10s elements but it was predominately late 2010s and felt like a transitional year imo. Although I do look at all the 2010s years being small gradual transitions as this decade was very consistent. Eras this decade are not cut and dry and strict, every year felt a little transition and gradual change.

2014 still feels somewhat connected to today, whereas 2013 does not.

To be honest, 2014 has more in common with 2015 and possibly even 2016 than it did with 2013. Throughout the year, political tensions started to rise with the Crimean crisis, the Isla Vista killings, the Michael Brown incident, the Ferguson riots, the rise of ISIS, and the refugee crisis.

2014 was actually very transitional, and if none of these events occurred, then the events you see in the news after that may have never happened. 2014 was like the seed, and 2017 is like the flower that used to be the seed.

Three other events that I probably should have added were Gamergate and The Fappening, both of which happened in 2014.

Yes. It started out feeling kinda like 2015, but towards the end it was more like 2017.

Yes... the SECOND HALF was. The first half was still very much apart of the classic 2010s, the latter part ushered in the era we are in today.
It was pretty similar to 2008, the end of one era and the slow beginning of a new one.
