Subject: When did white suburban kids get into rap music?

Written By: HeyJealousy on 12/28/17 at 6:25 pm

When did they start saying "homie" and "bro" all the time?
It wasn't a thing in the 80s, that's for sure.

Hip-hop steadily increased in popularity with suburban youth throughout the '90s.  Eminem however completely changed the game and made hip-hop mainstream on Top 40 radio.  Rap wasn't as prominent during the '90s on Top 40 as it was during the 2000s.

They've always been into rap. Moreso back during the heyday of rap when it was all about hoes and gangsters instead of today's nonsense.

It started in the 80s but most white people I knew back in the 90s thought it was black trash music (the 90s were not as liberal as people think.) I think white people's opinion of rap went through a metamorphosis during the 2000s.

Asians?

White homies bought AIC discs too. But tastes are diverse and back in the day the old school rap and gangster rap artists were also popular in the burbs. MC Hammer's Pumps and a Bump was especially popular.

They could identify with lyrics that talked about smoking chronic, ingesting mass quantities of malt liquor and keeping the THOT's in line. But once the lyrics shifted to pining for "shorty" and sipping Robitussin from a double cup, it turned off a lot of the burbites.

Yeah I would say between about 1990-1995.
