Subject: Is the manbun still in style?

Written By: Kid of the 2000s on 01/23/18 at 9:04 am

I've always liked this style ever since I saw a guy in my sixth from and college in 2007 with the style thinking of just starting it right now especially since, the style still is going stronger than ever here in the UK on  infact I've seen more people with it now then in 2015, but there was talk that it was going out or was going out on a couple other websites and a few posters here, so what u think?.

It seems to still be pretty popular, mostly among hipsters and wannabes, although the faction that considers it a pretentious affectation is ever widening.  This may be causing some people to hesitate from having one. Best to do what you want to do, either way.

I don't think I've seen it at all this year. It died sometime in 2017. I still see men with ponytails which is different from the manbun.

At the moment I cannot really tell, for most men are wearing hood and headgear to keep warm.

Matt Damon wears bizarre ‘man bun’ at premiere of Jason Bourne film in China

Hoping that no one would notice in China, or was for his latest film role?

That hairstyle is still fairly common from the '70s, I don't think it counts as a manbun. These are man buns to me

True, Matt Damon is more like a pony tail...

I saw three manbuns today, now that I've been on the lookout for them.

I guess they're not completely dead, but this is a far cry from 2015/2016 when I could easily see 50+ in one day.

I saw one on television yesterday, and it put me of the quiz for a while.

I'll still see Ponytails and Blowouts here and there, but in the Tri-State area (where I'm from) manbuns were at their zeitgeist back in like 2015/2016, and seemed to had died for much of 2017. The Hipster look (and subculture for that matter) in general has been on a decline for the last two years.

I just saw a manbun yesterday actually. They're popular, but they're also not unpopular. Does that make sense?

In 10 years, manbuns will be considered to be as embarrassing and ridiculous as mullets are today.

I still see a lot of them around here but less in white dudes and more on Latino guys of late whereas in 2015-2016 it was mostly a white hipster thing. Actually in 2015 I only saw them at college, never in my neighborhood; now I see them in my area a lot. The guys who wear them now usually have the sides faded but not shaved and don't wear beards, unlike the 2015 hipsters at school. The "buns" themselves have also gotten shorter.

Having grown up in a mullet household and having worn one as a kid, I resent that statement. I think they're an unfairly hated hairstyle.

I work with a couple of guys who still sport the iconic mullet. "Business in the front, party in the back...".  ;D

I also remember mullets being referred to as the "Kentucky Waterfall" or, my favorite, the "Missouri Compromise."  ;D

Really, I think all the mullet hate started when Billy Ray Cyrus hit it big.

You're from the Tri State too right?

Anyways I agree with this. The trend was big with hipster culture in NYC, especially in Williamsburg, Greenwich Village, Hoboken, etc. But FWIW, while I do see many white guys by me still rocking the Ponytail look, I have seen a few Arabian guys still rock the manbun. So its not 'dead' per say, but certainly less prominent then it was 2-3 years ago.

It doesn't look right on the 99% of people that try it tbh. Very difficult to pull off.

Dating back to the release in 1959, the coachman for Cinderella in Disney's film has a pony-tail or man-bun.

Pretty sure Cinderella was released in 1950, and that's not really a bun considering it should be a ball of hair placed higher on the skalp :p
