Subject: Differences between 2010 and now

Written By: Rainbowz on 02/17/18 at 8:31 pm

Since we only have one year left in the 2010's, what are some differences you have noticed between the year 2010 to now?

One of the main differences I can think of is smartphones. In 2010, blackberry phones were still common and it wasn't considered odd to have a digital camera as they were still very common back then.

Another major thing that has changed was the music. Back in 2010, Electropop was at its peak, artists like Ke$ha were extremely popular, hip-hop still had that late 2000's influences sound to it, nowadays it is mainly Trap.

Fashion has also seemed to change. Back in 2010, long hair on guys was still common, scene fashion was still quite common, nowadays it is mainly hipster.

What are some differences you've noticed?

The fashion
The president
Netbooks vs Ultrabooks
No Snapchat, Instagram, Uber, Airbnb (actually I think it started that year)
Bluetooth headphones were strictly for calling
There was no music streaming site in Canada (first was Google Play Music in 2014)
There was no Netflix in Canada either.
No Apple TV/Chromecast/Roku and the like. Cable was still king.
7th generation of gaming vs. 8th generation
Handheld gaming was still wildly successful. Even though Angry Birds and Ninja Run got popular that year, mobile gaming was still in its relative infancy.

I'll post more as I think of them.

In 2010, Ke$ha spelled her name with a "$"

In 2018 she dropped the $ in favor of "S"

Difference being the internet has improved massively. Robots are getting common in some works centres, self-check out services are getting common, where you scan your items on a computer-like-machine and pay by putting your money inside. 2018 sees the development of 5G and I think in 2010 there was only 2G (I may be wrong). Phones are now bigger and thinner, and you can access the internet by just one-click away. Music has taken a turn from hip-hop/edm, to mostly trap and vaporwave is slowly creeping back. Films are using more technology than before and more topics are becoming less controversial than before. The fashion of the late one ties are becoming inspired a lot by the 90s. Baggy jeans, long hair, chokers, fitted jeans and dresses are coming back, but clothes are also becoming more creative and classier. African designs are now used for some clothing's we see in shops. The world now revolves around social media; there is social media activism and you can basically check the news on the internet. More jobs require computer skills than before. Sites like Facebook are becoming more targeted to older people between (28-50) as now Snapchat and Instagram captures the attention of young people. 4D films are being shown; 3D was new during 2009/10, but is very common now whilst 4D is becoming new. A lot has changed within the space of almost 8 years.

The main differences are in technology. Less digital cameras around, cell phones look different, social media is now mobile-centred over desktop-centred, physical media is not as prevalent (no more Blockbuster just Netflix now), less streaming in general, no 4K heck no 1440p even, and more. Pop culture, music, and fashion isn't extremely different though, a couple minor notable differences but nothing drastic. Technology on the other hand has changed a lot since the decade first started.

The biggest differences between 2010 and 2018 IMO are in Technology and Politics

In 2010 society was a lot more centrist in its values. There wasn't a prevalence of SJW's and the alt-right/anti-SJW weren't a thing yet. There seemed to be a lot bigger diversity in phones back in 2010. iPhones and Android OS phones were starting to become popular but were balanced out by older style smartphones such as Blackberry's and Nokia E63. You could occasionally see a young person still have a flip phone. I got a Nokia E63(Nokia's version of a blackberry) for my 15th birthday in September 2010. iPads came out that year but were quite expensive and had limtied functionality compared to the ipad airs today. Facebook was the undisputed go-to social media platform for Teens/young adults in 2010, where today it's Snapchat and Instagram. Streaming was basically non-existent and it was the last year of Limewire.

Overall, 2010 does not feel like another world, but enough time has passed to notice significant differences between then and now.

I agree. Politics is another big change from the start of the decade. People are so into politics now and average Joes on the internet think they are experts while in 2010 if you were into politics you were considered a geek.  I miss the times where people weren't as divided and didn't use labels on themselves like left and right. Here in Canada it's not as bad but on the internet you can't escape it.

I agree on Politics but if you live in Australia, 2010 was actually the beginning of the political division we see today. When Julia Gillard knifed Kevin Rudd as the PM of Australia we've pretty much changed Prime Minister every year lol.

One thing I was thinking about last night is how in 2010, it was still common for people to have a CRT tube TV.  You were considered trendy if you had an LCD flat panel and plasma TVs were still a thing.  You also still would occasionally see people using a CRT computer monitor.

In terms of music, even though the year is mostly remembered for electropop, you still had a lot of late 2000s holdover artists still popular like Daughtry, The Fray, Gavin Degraw, and Plain White Ts.  Daughtry's 2010 hit "September" was the last Nickelback-style post grunge song to have widespread popularity.  2010 felt like the end of an era in many ways when it comes to music.

CRT TVs and monitors were not "common" anymore in 2010 even though some people still had them.

I was wondering about that too. I think I shared this story before. My parents were renting out property (the house I'm living in right now actually), and in 2010, one of the tenants left behind their CRT TV when they moved out. We called them back and they said we could keep it; except, we didn't want it! We called up a few relatives and once we told them it was a CRT they didn't want it either. No one wanted a free TV! Haha.

Maybe things moved a little slower down there? Although from what I remember, HDTVs were well established and 3DTVs were supposed to be the next big thing that everyone was trying to get in on.

I'm not saying CRT TVs were dominant, but you were more likely to run into people who still had them (especially younger/poorer people).  Today, you rarely see them at all.  A lot of businesses still had CRT monitors at that time as well.

The pop songs sound fairly similar, just a lot slower in 2018. I remember I hated the music from 2010 - 2012, and then when 2013 hit I started liking a couple mainstream songs again especially when the whole throwback disco vibe came and Macklemore came on the scene. Now I'm back to hating on mainstream music, even though it's still slightly better than 2010 - 2012.

Mainstream music then was the kind that gets played at clubs and parties and people dance to. Mainstream music now is the kind that you play when you're chilling with a couple of friends. It's a lot slower now and not as noisy which is a huge improvement imo.

I've been noticing this for a while. I call a lot of today's music "pill popping music", mainly Hip-Hop and R&B. It's very slow and many of the songs glorify pill popping.

- iPhones were still considered the only smartphone, HTC had most of the Android market
- The first iPad wasn't released until the summer
- Lady Gaga was still popular, most music had an EDM sound (even hip-hop)
- Facebook was very popular, people posted their status in 3rd person, and always posted everything on their mind including what they ate for dinner

Not really, I definitely remember that the Apple vs. Android craze was already big back then.
Though as a whole, smartphones weren't widespread as they are today.
