Subject: 2000s Nostalgia in 2018

Written By: SailorSteven2017 on 03/04/18 at 8:25 pm

I was listening to New Music Friday when I heard songs like "Breeze Off The Pond" by JT, "Short Court Style" by Natalie Press, and "I Need You" by Paris Hilton and thinking "OMG these sound so 2000s!". Because I know many of you are better at detecting this than me, do you think 2000s nostalgia is coming into music and do these songs sound 2000s? I already know that the fashion is coming back due to a post in another thread(?). Plus, it'd be cool to see people dress and compose songs like how they did when I was born!

I have a brother who was born in 1997 and one time he bragged about how games were good in the 2000s or back then. And one time i did ask him what his favorite year was he said it was 2006 and he one time was singing American Boy the well known song from 2008 and he also listens to most 2000s songs from Kanye West.

Cool! At least we can say we were born "when games were good" if we want to boast about the 2000s too.  ;D

P.S. The only Kanye song from the 2000s I know is Stronger.  :P

Paris Hilton released a song?

Well, y'all asked for 2000s nostalgia and you're going to get it.

If you're into Hip-Hop you should go listen to his first two albums.

I don't think the 2000s nostalgia is strong this decade. But it makes sense that it wouldn't be. We're only 8 years removed from the 2000s.

The early and mid 2000s are slowly making a comeback as they start to be a while ago (15 to 18 years ago for the early already :o). The later part will have to wait a few years still cuz they're still kinda recent.

The 2020s will be 2000s' time of glory anyway, when 80s nostalgia will completely die out and 90s & 2000s will rule supreme.

There are hints of it now, but I think 2000s nostalgia will peak in the early-mid 2020s

I feel like 2000s nostalgia will get worst than 90s nostalgia a 1995er on youtube hates everything 2010s and feels bad for people who didn't get to experience growing up in the 2000s.
What pisses me off is that 90s/2000s kids have the mentality to feel bad for kids who are growing up in the 2010s everyone may not have the same childhood but atleast they have one like everybody else and nobodies special just for being born in the 90s or 00s or just being a kid in it.

In real life, I've never heard anyone brag about being a kid in the 2000's, I've only seen that online, personally. I have heard the 90's kid thing in real life though.

Most people I know my age, when referring to childhood, mention things from around 2005-2012, and they don't really focus on the time these things happened or released, usually just the things themselves. I think the 2010's are a great time to be a kid as someone who was a kid during the early parts of the decade.

Yeah I think it's okay to have nostalgia for the 2000s but it shouldn't be shoved in people faces I'm glad as a 2004er I try to distance myself from the "if your born in 2004" you're a 2000s kids which isn't true and honestly I thought I was a 2000s kid until I started to get nostalgia for 2012-2014 I'm proud to be a 2010s kid.

Unfortunately, you're right. I feel like when 2000s nostalgia is in full swing, 2000's kids will be mean to 2010's kids and shove their childhood in their faces and brag about how great their childhood was and how being a 2010's kids sucks. Honestly, I think 90's kids are to somewhat blame. I mean, most 90's kids I came across online were total douchebags (pardon the language) to 2000's kids. Always flaunting their childhood around and going on about how 2000's kids have no childhood. I guess that's how every generations work though. Every generation complains about the next generation and then the next  ::)

I'm a '90s kid but honestly I think 2000s kids are more like 90s kids than 2010s kids are like 2000s kids.  The thing that makes 2010s kids an entirely new generation, separate from Millennials, is the fact they grew up after the digital revolution and likely had smartphones as children.  That completely changes the kind of childhood that 2010s kids have had vs what 2000s kids and 90s kids had.  I think the biggest difference between 90s kids and 00s kids is the entertainment.  00s kids grew up with significantly more Disneyfied entertainment in a lot of ways compared to 90s kids.  But the overall attitude and worldview is the same which is why 90s kids and 00s kids are both Millennials.  Both cohorts played with real toys and played outside and learned how to interact socially in person before learning how to do it behind a keyboard or a smartphone.

I hope not either. Nostalgia is special and it supposed to be about remembering the great times we had when we were younger. It's not supposed to be a fad or used as something to prove superiority upon others. Seriously, using nostalgia as a fashion statement or a fad detracts from how special it is. I liked 90's nostalgia at first. They just over saturated it and I basically see it everywhere I go, whether it's on the internet or in public. I know 2000's nostalgia is heading in that direction soon.

You know it's ashamed that I'm seeing 90's babies hating on everything 2010's related. I haven't come across a 2000's baby (except a couple, but they were born in the early 2000's) that tries to pass themselves on as a 2000's kid. I like the 2010's (except for 2015 and 2016, please no hate).

I don't know about that to be honest. I'm a 2000's kid and actually had some of my childhood in the early 2010's,  which I think by default makes me closer to a 2010's kid. I may not be able to speak for everyone my age, but for myself, I grew up completely digitally, most of my childhood memories were spent online or playing video games.

You mention real toys, 2010's kids do play with real toys as well as the stereotypical things people attribute to them like tablets. I'm in a large family where my siblings, cousins, and I were born from 1994-2015 (and we all live pretty close to each other), so I've grown up seeing 10's kids grow up. A lot of the younger ones actually play outside more than us older ones did, which makes me think people are exaggerating when saying kids don't play outside anymore.

I used to go outside everyday from when I was 8-11 I'm 13 now it's like they make it seem like we 2010s kids don't go outside or have never breathed the air ever since we were born.

Yeah, don't worry about it. My cousin who was born the same year as me was saying to my sister a few months ago that they were the last generation to play outside, and I looked through the window behind me to see our little cousins playing outside while she was saying that, lol. ;D

I think I remember a girl born in 2003 on YouTube made a "You're a 2000's kid if" video. She mainly lists things from the very late 2000's like PS3, Wii, Facebook, iPhones, etc. She didn't even said anything about the Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox which were definitive 2000's gaming consoles. She didn't even mentioned cartoons and sitcoms from 2000-2005. She acted like cartoons and sitcoms from 2000-2005 didn't exist. I'm not sure what happened to the video, but I'll try to look for it.

I saw it too, I think. I couldn't really relate to it and a lot of them seemed more like late 2000s-early 2010s kid fads. At least 2002-2006 borns seemed to really relate in the comments and were happy about it, so it has some purpose in any case :)

Also yeah as a 2000s kid I absolutely fear when internet's 2000s nostalgia gonna peak in like 2023-2024, when normally the 2020s will come to their own and 2010s kids gonna start coming en masse on forum boards (2008-2010 borns would be between 16-14 years by that time :o), and the 90s kids assholery cyclus just gonna repeat itself 8-P.

Collective nostalgia is supposed to have fun remembering silly things like you dancing on Dragostea Din Tei, the struggles of having an XBOX 360 and always wanting more of those damn Crazy Bones

2004-version of myself in me's heart is pounding

and not sheeshting on 2010s kids cuz they grew up with an iPad of some bullsheesh like that.

Well that's what happens when you have someone whose only have clear memories of the very late 00s, Could you imagine someone in 10 years time, someone born in 2013 claiming now as 'their' kid culture.

What would be so bad about that? They're 5 years old at the moment.

If kid culture right now is not theirs, then Whose is it? 20 year olds’?
