Subject: Steven Spielberg is Remaking West Side Story

Written By: Philip Eno on 03/21/18 at 7:48 am

After hopping from prestige drama The Post to CGI-heavy action blockbuster Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg is planning another gear shift for his next project. Instead of cooling his jets and taking a break, he’s heading back to shark territory — but not in the Jaws sense. Yes, Spielberg looks to be helming a remake of West Side Story.

...and Rob Schneider can make an appearance as a gang member.

I didn't mind Natalie Wood in the original. She wanted to sing ... but, good sense prevailed and they ended up dubbing her (she wasn't too good in Gypsy). It's one of those musicals where the singers and dancers do not need to have both skills. I would definitely like to hear the actors actually sing their parts though. Maria doesn't need to be a big name this time (the musical has already been a proven success). The casting is about the chemistry between Maria and Tony. Get that right (and the singing) ... and it will be good.

Subject: West Side Story: Spielberg on casting the film from Latin American community

Written By: Philip Eno on 12/06/21 at 5:28 am

Steven Spielberg, the director of the new film adaptation of the musical West Side Story, has said he insisted on casting actors from the Latin American community for relevant roles.

The 1961 film has been criticised for having members of the Puerto Rican gang the Sharks portrayed by white actors.

Spielberg told the BBC he was striving for more authentic representations.

"First thing I said was every single Shark, boy and girl, needs to come from the Latinx communities," he said.

"And without fail."
