Subject: I am starting to see signs of early 2020s culture

Written By: Anderson1304 on 03/26/18 at 7:49 pm

With the march for our lives Saturday and just other stuff going on it definitely is starting to have a different feel culture wise. Anyone agree?

You can't say until the 2020s happen. As of right now, I consider it a 2010s event because it happened in 2018, and gun violence has been a huge topic this decade.

Welcome to the forums. :)

Thanks. Been following along for a while now just decided to register. Idk i just feel a culture shift happening and on 5 yrs we may look back and say that's when we started seeing signs of the next decade. Also driverless cars are now coming out and vr devices are being used more often

tbh protests have been going on strong since 2012.

Also, welcome to the boards! Happy to have you here!

We're not going to know for certain if anything has changed or when for a few years out. After all, this is why we constantly argue about whether or not the 2010s started in 2008 or 2013. ;D

In 10 years people will argue whether 2018 had early 2020s culture just like with 2008 being argued if it had early 2010s culture.

Also welcome to the forums.

I don't think self driving cars will be a thing for a long time tbh

"March For Our Lives" is very '10s.  It fits right in with the grassroots social justice causes that have been big this decade.

I feel 2020s culture will begin when Trump is gone.

The whole "self-driving cars" development just hit a bump, with the woman in Arizona who was struck and killed by a self-driving Uber last week. Don't get me wrong, they're still working on adjusting and perfecting the technology but it might take another 5-10 years at least before we start seeing them everywhere on the freeways and backroads.

Welcome to the forum BTW.

Not very long. I have a feeling Trump will die due to a medical condition like a heart attack in as early as this year.

IMO I think this is more of a late 2010's thing. Just because something becomes popular when the decade is almost over doesn't always mean its a sign of the next decade's culture.

Either all the drama settles down or it just gets even more crazy next decade. I'm betting the latter will happen.

Yeah fortnite has been popular lately it's been mostly talked about at my school.

It’s really impossible to say now actually since we are not in the 2020s yet, nobody has any idea what even the early 2020s will truly be like. If Trump is gone after 2020 and things get more back to normal, today actually could seem pretty distant by even 2021 for example.

Yeah it really has. It even overtook overwatch in terms of popularity. I haven’t played overwatch since christmas, and I haven’t seen any of my friends play it since even longer ago. But fortnite on the other hand I play on an almost daily basis with my friends.

As far as I remember nobody talked about overwatch at my school when it released.
I don't have fortnite but I hope it comes on the Switch.

It’ll be a while till th switch has online gameplay though. You can download the game on a pc if you have one. And you don’t even really need a strong pc.

Hmm... my only issue with these ideas is, how particularly do any of the things mentioned here differ from our current 2010s culture?  I'm definitely excited to see early 2020s culture come around, just curious.

Because before the solar eclipse happened, things felt the same as 2008, but as it was happening you could feel  the transition from the late 2010’s to the early 2020’s. The next day, on August 22nd 2017, it was 100% early 2020’s.

I agree. It definitely feels different from the sunny and warm 2010's. I predict that there will be a snowstorm that brings us into mid-2030's culture, or maybe perhaps a hurricane called "Hurricane Laquisha"

I'd say there are numerous signs of early '20s culture at this point. For one, Donald Trump will still be president (most likely if nothing goes wrong before he ends his term) for at least 2020 but he may win another term again. Next, Justin Trudeau looks like he will get a second term in 2019 which makes him prime minister still for a bit in the early '20s. The whole Russia drama, tension, and world events we are seeing now are all signs of early '20s culture. Given all of this, if people are expecting true change we probably won't see it until we are closer to the mid 2020s. Now if you are talking about music and popular trends in pop culture, then this can change anytime but I am honestly not noticing any signs of change in this regard right now. I honestly don't know if 2020 will be that different I just feel it will only be more intense and crazy than it is now but I don't think we will see positive change.

It's fine to disagree but it's not okay to be rude about it even if you think you are being funny. The OP didn't do anything wrong and people are trolling hard and being unwelcoming.

I believe the transition to the 2020's began as early as 2005 with hurricane Katrina. I remember when that storm was happening and I could feel a transition coming. Things definitely started feeling different.
So in short, I'd say the last summer of the 2000's was summer of 2004, and the first summer of the 2020's was summer of 2005.

Yeah, but just because an aspect of culture is popular in the late 2010’s doesn’t always mean it’s going to be apart of early 2020’s culture. Blackberries for example were more of a late 2000’s thing but lots of people already had an iPhone by 2011/2012.
