Subject: Windows 8

Written By: Dr. Mario on 04/06/18 at 7:30 pm

Who's still using Windows 8? What are your thoughts about Windows 8? I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10 in Mid 2016.

My first time using Windows 8 was in August 2013, when my dad upgraded his work laptop, which we all used in the living room at the time. Windows 8 at first was cancerous as hell. The Windows 8 Metro interface would inner fear with the desktop interface way too often. This was BEFORE Windows 8.1 came mind you.

In January 2015, I got (was gifted) my own laptop, which isn't the same one I have now. Using Windows 8.1 was alright, it was miles better than vanilla Windows 8, but I immediately download the ClassicShell start menu so that I didn't have to deal with the Metro bullcrap again.

I actually kinda miss the rainbow craziness of the metro theme, but Windows 10 is still my preferred OS. I almost forgot Windows 8 even existed.

I liked the uniqueness of Windows 8. I remember the first time I used it was the day Prince George was born, because as I was setting it up I kept seeing news headlines about the birth. I wonder how many people kept it instead of switching to Windows 10?

Here's a chart of the Windows OS market from March 2017 to March 2018.

Mainstream support for Windows 8 already ended on January 9th, 2018. Damn, it's already showing its age. Though, extended support will go on until January 10th, 2023.

I wouldn’t change Win10 for Win8, but it would be cool to put Windows 8 menu as an option in Windows 10, like Win XP did it with a Win95 theme

Ah the infamous Windows 8. I remember the huge backlash it received when it was released in 2012. Everyone hated it and for good reason. It was a schizophrenic operating system and didn't know what it wanted to be. Wasn't good for tablet users and wasn't good for desktop users either.

They had the classic theme even in Windows 7. Windows 8 & 10 don't have the classic theme at all.

I hate that. I really wish Windows 10 had the aero theme as an option actually. I miss the aero transparency the UI looked so cool and futuristic in Windows 7.

The Aero theme was pretty cool. I personally think Windows Vista did the Aero theme a bit better than Windows 7 did.

I thought the hysteria over Windows 8 was quite over the top and ridiculous. It was basically Windows 7 but with an inconvenient start screen, but other than that it was 99% the same. I got a Windows 8 laptop in January 2013 and didn't think much of it.

I disagree. Windows 8 was a tragedy it was like Vista all over again. I remember when it came out I thought it was terrible and Microsoft was on drugs for putting it out lol.

Also, it wasn't like Windows 7 at all. The OS got booted up to the start screen first and that was meant to be the primary UI. Then it takes you to the desktop where you get a completely different experience. Then there were a lot of bugs in the UX as well. Aero wasn't even on it they removed that. It was nothing like Windows 7 at all. Windows 7 was much better overall.

I disagree here.  Windows 8 was probably the worst and most unnecessary Windows release in history (other than maybe Windows Me which most people on this board probably won't remember).  Vista, or all it's problems, was at least a step forward from XP.  Windows 7 had not been out very long yet at that time and 8 was more or less a step down in usability.  I think the fact that so few people still use 8 is a testament to its success.  The older Windows 7 is still very popular but you don't see 8 much anymore.  I do like Windows 10 though and I think it is what 8 should have been to start with.

It was pretty much the exact same as 7. Once you boot up to the Metro start screen and click on Desktop, voilà, same thing as Windows 7. I'm not saying Windows 8 is better than 7, but it was not that different.

Thing about Vista was that it had huge memory leaks, and the OS alone required 600-700MB of RAM when XP required half that. Despite any new features, it was extremely slow. This wasn't the case going from 7 to 8, 8 was actually more lightweight than 7, but overall they weren't that different in my opinion. It wasn't meant to be a XP to Vista level upgrade, it was a small change they made to accommodate all the touch screen laptops that were becoming popular.

No the desktop was not the same. No Aero theme on Windows 8 for one which made the UI look different. Secondly, the UX was different as well given you didn't have a start menu and all the features users are familiar with have been changed around. It was so complicated for the average user and it was a terrible OS. It was a 4 step process to shut down the computer and it was so hard to find lol. Windows Vista was bad, the bugs were terrible and Vista was the worst OS Microsoft released but 8 comes to a second imo. It was very bad in my opinion. A lot of people used Star Menu 8 to hack and get the start menu back, but out of the box Windows 8 was a messy experience for the user. You had to constantly transition from the metro UI (now known as the modern UI) to the traditional desktop UI.

Wasn't it criticized for being too tablet/phone-targeted? IIRC they released it mainly for the windows phones back then.

Yup. Traditional desktop users hated it because of that. And mobile-inclined users also hated it because the desktop side was not optimized for touch which also created a bad experience. So it was a lose-lose scenario and the entire OS was a big messy half-baked cluster. Windows 10 is actually what Windows 8 should have been.

Windows 8 and the whole "Metro design language" created by Microsoft could be what killed skeuomorphism that was everywhere in the 2000s. By the early 2010s, minimalism became king.

In a span of 3 years, the entire world changed from this:

Very interesting, I do miss the old iPod layout, and I agree, Windows 8 introduced a very blocky feel to it that introduced a very bland and un-lively. It feels like everything nowadays is made with vivid solids colors. The Nintendo Switch menus are the epitome of what I'm talking about.

Compared that to the Wii U menu, on a console that came out in November 2012.

It's weird how glossy and shiny used to be perceived as futuristic, but now, it's all about shiny colors.

As for my opinion, Windows 8 isn't a bad system. It just had the mild inconvinience of that start menu, but it just was a question of getting used to. Otherwise it was a tragedy like lets say Vista was.

But of course People just ADORE to jump directly on the hate bandwagon

I like it too for the clean finish, even though it has its drawbacks (I do agree it sometimes ends up being on the bland side, especially when you go thight on the colors).

No one mentionning Google? They went all-out with the adaption of the flat design :D

I disagree. I'm a huge fan of the minimalist and colourful design.

The one I'm the least fan of is the early-mid 2000s round metallic designs. It looked really ugly, especially the Gamecube and Gameboy Advance SP logos. But obviously nothing is as bad as the 1980s big block letter stuff lol.
