Subject: Middle schoolers in the early 2010's vs. now

Written By: Rainbowz on 05/06/18 at 10:58 am

I was looking at photos of middle schoolers between the years 2011-2017, and I get a very different "vibe" looking at the photos from 2011 vs. 2017.

I feel like middle schoolers back in the early 2010's looked a lot older and looked more like they went through that "awkward phase", whereas middle schoolers today looked like they skipped the awkward stage, yet still look younger.

Here are some examples. These photos are not me or from me:

I don't know about you, but I get two completely different vibes looking at these photos. I definitely notice a huge difference, especially in fashion.

I could probably see why the kids in the mid/late 2010's photos look older. The early 2010's photos still look kind of late 2000's IMO.

Early 2010s middle schoolers played MW3, while late 2010s middle schoolers play Fortnite.
Also, early 2010s middle schooler look a lot more 2000s than 2010s, but late 2010s middle schoolers look 100% 2010s.
You know, I feel like us mid 2010s middle schoolers had it best. At the beginning of middle school, a lot of early 2010s trends were still going strong, but we also had all the mid 2010s trends such as Vine and hover boards. Also, we were in middle school at the peak of the decade which I think is really cool.

Well, I was a middle schooler in the early 2010s and I don't think that we "looked older" but we certainly were different than middle schoolers of today.

Obama was still in his first term, the biggest games during that time were Call of Duty: Black Ops, Red Dead Redemption 2, Mass Effect 2, God of War III, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Doodle Jump, Angry Birds, Temple Run, Fruit Ninja, LA Noire, Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2, Battlefield 3, Dark Souls, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin's Creed III, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2, Max Payne 3, Halo 4, etc.

Now, Trump is President and the biggest games are the rebooted God of War and Fortnite.

D'awww, wearing bright/neon colors was just super popular in the early 2010s ;D.

The coolest gadget to have was actually an iPod :D I remember really wanting one of these:

I really miss MW-Black Ops 2 era CoD. It was the golden age of CoD, and I really wish I could go back to that era.

Fashion trends, lol.

Also, more kids nowadays want to look older because of IG and Snapchat.

I went to middle school in the mid 2010's, from 2013 to 2016, during the 7th generation's last days of relevance, since the PS4 and Xbox One came out in the middle of my 6th grade year, though the Xbox 360 and PS3 were still getting most of the multi-platform games in 2014. Obama was in his second term, and talk about the 2016 U.S. Election was huge during the 2015-2016 school year. When I started middle school, the newest Call of Duty was Black Ops II, then Ghosts, Advance Warfare, and Black Ops III came out during my middle school years, though, I've never played any Call of Duty. The first time I even heard about Overwatch, was a day after a graduated 8th grade, when I saw it advertised on a Taco Bell beverage cup.

Yeah, 98% of that stuff was high school for me. Overwatch became big last year though not really during my time in high school.

My middle school days were mostly in the late 00s and I'll say we looked older than today's middle schoolers. Back when I was in middle school kids already gave off that angsty teen vibe due to the emo snap/autotune rap era. Kids used iPods and Mp3/Mp4 players, Slider phones and Blackberry phones were in, transitioned from the Bush to the Obama era,  the 7th generation of gaming was starting to pick up steam while the 6th gen still had some relevance and Youtube was starting to become a site to binge watch videos.

Wow, ok. The 2011 pictures surprisingly look quite 2000s and it's strange becasue I never thought it would look dated so quick, but these middle schoolers definetly look very different from the mid/late 2010s ones. The mid/late 2010s ones actually look younger themselves, but what they're wearing makes them look older.

I guess things would be differnt now, I was in middle school during 2011 & 2012 and now I'm in University so it's expected.

I was between 4'9 and 4'11 throughout 6th grade, but once 7th grade started I ended up being over 5'0. Girls usually hit puberty way earlier than boys though, and I know this because when I was in 5th and 6th grade there were girls who were hitting growth spurts and were as tall as me or taller for a couple of years before I passed them again throughout 7th & 8th grade. Now this is when it comes to the girls who are between 5'0 and 5'6. The girls who are between 5'7 and up were my height or taller than me for most of my K-12 years growing up. I didn't hit 5'8 until sometime around 9th grade, then I hit 5'11 right after 10th grade ended and I haven't gotten any taller ever since.

In sixth grade, I was only 4'4" or 4'5" and by the time I finished middle school I was only 4'11"/5'0". Seven years later, I'm still the same height as I was when I left middle school. I'm a male. I'm still skinny but not as scrawny as I was before, but I'm still short.  :o

I'm graduating middle school in two weeks and being in middle school from the mid-late 2010s (2015-2018) is kind of weird as it had an trap feeling to it where i live any hip hop mostly mumbling and trap would become popular at my middle school and as social media becomes more useful being in middle school in the late 2010s seperates from being in middle school in the early part of this decade.

Does middle school start in 6th grade where you live?

For me 2012-2014 didn't feel that different from each other, but I could see 2015 feeling different because of the beginning of campaigning for the 2016 election.

From what I remember, 2012 felt different from 2014. In 2014, you had Vine being at its peak, trap music getting popular, Iggy Azalea at her peak, meanwhile in 2012 electropop was still popular, very little to no Generation Z culture had arrived yet, and Vine wasn't out yet. Facebook was still quite popular in 2012 among teens, whereas by 2014 it was all about Instagram and Snapchat.

Just watched this video from 2010:
CWOYndquycY

It looks really dated by today's standards.

Compare the 2010 video I just shared to this:

A lot has changed, especially in terms of fashion.

We didn't have the same advanced social media networking and culture that it is today. I feel like that would've bolstered my confidence in my middle and high school days if we did.

Dang! I wish we actually made videos like this of our year too

Our school only started making actual "yearly photo albums" on their website from 2012 on

They have that C/O 2015 vibe too I can tell the moment I play the video. There's always a certain vibe and culture about certain graduating classes from the time they started Kindergarten all the way to the end. C/O 2012 in high school had a completely different look and vibe than the C/O 2013. C/O 2012 looked very mature for their age while C/O 2013 looked very young for their age.
