Subject: XXXTentacion’s Death: Is This The “Disco Demolition” Of Trap?

Written By: HeyJealousy on 06/18/18 at 5:51 pm

Kind of like how the Wonderland Murders forever altered the 70s porn scene.

Or how Kurt Cobain’s death marked the decline of the grunge scene.

Or how losing Tupac and Biggie put a dent in the “gangsta rap” scene.

Dare I say it, is this “THE event”?

The Wonderland Murders were irrelevant to the 70s porn scene as they occurred in 1981, and they certainly did not lead to the end of the Golden Age of Porn.

Nor did they cause the decline of the career of its central figure, John "Johnny Wadd" Holmes. By the time of the murders he was already a raging cocaine addict who had, how shall I phrase this delicately, "performance issues". He simply could not get his mojo working due to all that dope and at that time, Viagra was not available.

Additionally by 1982 (when John was finally released from jail after he was exonerated of the murders by a jury) videotape was taking over the porno scene and so the huge paydays that top-line performers like John Holmes, Harry Reems, Tony "the Hook" Perez, Marilyn Chambers and the like were gone. The industry flocked to C-list people who would do the nasty in front of a camcorder for a couple of hundred bucks. John's last big payday was for a gay flick where he played some sort of sultan being serviced by other men.  :o  The entire cast of that flick ultimately died from AIDS and it is speculated that this is where Holmes caught the dreaded disease.  :-\\

As much as people on this forum want Trap music to die, there's no sign of it stopping soon. Beyoncé x Jay Z's new Trap/Hip Hop album is going to do very well, and Trap is still the dominant genre in the streaming era. Trap music is here to stay for at least a few years more years. This might slowdown the emo-wave of Hip Hop that's become popular in Soundcloud, but trap as a whole has never been bigger. I think the death of trap will be in the early 20s, probably in '21.

I'm not.

But in case you're not aware, XXXTentacion had a MASSIVE following. He was an up-and-comer. This new generation is going to have XXX's death etched in their minds, just like John Lennon's death is still etched in Boomers' minds.

Who do you think 15-year-old suburban white Joshua from Ohio is listening to? I'll give you a hint, it's not Alice In Chains. Or Megadeth. Or even NWA. Most young white suburban/exurban males in Middle America don't know of a world beyond trap rap, EDM, or whatever's being promoted to death online. XXX's death is going to have an impact, and you can't underestimate it.

What's my source? I have a 13 year old sister (7 years my junior) and she's a tomboy of sorts. She knows what's selling and what's not. XXX was selling big until' today. Nobody's comparing him to 2Pac or Cobain or fu*king Lennon, but you can't underestimate his impact on this new generation of music fans.

As tragic as this is, this rapper doesn't even have a Wikipedia article. Is he all that important?

Subject: Re: XXXTentacion’s Death: Is This The “Disco Demolition” Of Trap?

I really do think that this guy was the face of late 2010s music. Lil Pump is arguably more popular, sure, but XXXTentacion has a huge and devoted fanbase, a way more diverse musical catalog, and he's respected by a decent amount of big name staples in the music industry (Kanye, Tyler the Creator, Kendrick Lamar and Travis Barker to name a few).

As someone who graduated high school this year, I can't emphasize just how many people at my school listened to and idolized this guy. His influence was crazy. People played his music all the time, talked about his newest albums (he released two in a pretty short span of time), argued over his latest antics. Losing him was losing a huge part of late 2010s teen/young adult culture. If you're familiar with this guy, you'll know that he's irreplaceable, whether because of his musical versatility, his controversy, his fanboys, his haters, etc. You probably have at least a few XXXTentacion fans (and passionate haters) in each of your classes.

His death is absolutely making waves across the hip hop community, too. I can't think of a single big late 2010s rapper who hasn't paid their respects to him on Twitter or Instagram.

So to address your point about this being a pivotal event, I'll say this: the 2017-18 school year may have just been the height of late 2010s culture, with the slow descent towards early 20s culture starting today with the death of XXXTentacion. That's how much of an impact I think this guy's death really had on today's youth. And just like how Kurt Cobain's death spawned a copycat suicide crisis, I've already been seeing some people claiming they know others who are threatening suicide because of XXXTentacion's death.

Well the poster's point has some comparative validity... Disco Demolition Night was a singular event that kicked off the end of the dreaded Disco Era. It is quite possible that the death of XXX (along with the death on the same day of Jimmy Wopo) could precipitate a similar demise of the rap genre.

Bahahaha, now it's the whole rap genre that is doomed  ::) ::) ::)
Demolition Day was a violent backlash purposely targeted that was already on its way out in 1979. How is that in any way, shape or form comparable to the death of a mildly succesful artist? Like I said he's more the face of emo-rap (and this genre already suffered from the death of a big representative artist back in November, and yet the genre is still picking up), than really trap.

Rap in general is nowhere close to doomed, if it survived the deaths of two big rap giants (2Pac and Biggy back) back in the 90s, it will certainly survives this.

Nah, MJ had and still has a HUGE following.

XXXTentacion shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as MJ.

I can't believe people are comparing XXXTentacion to people like MJ and John Lennon.  Not even in the same league at all.  XXXTentacion wasn't even a 2Pac.

People are thirsty for that cultural shift.

Maybe, but people should stop holding their breath.  I mean...none of us will ever see a shift bigger than the 2006 shift.

Yeah. The late 2006 shift changed absolutely everyone and things, life, and the world have always sucked since then.

The 2006 shift was the shift to end all shifts.

Well the poster's point has some comparative validity... Disco Demolition Night was a singular event that kicked off the end of the dreaded Disco Era. It is quite possible that the death of XXX (along with the death on the same day of Jimmy Wopo) could precipitate a similar demise of the rap genre.

Sorry but this is reaching.  ;D

Yeah. Everything has been 100% exactly the same since September 1st, 2006 12:00 AM. I can't tell a single difference between then and now.

Alright, we get it. Enough with the troll posts about "the 2006 shift".

Or else, I'll lock this thread.

Just saw the evening news in Pittsburgh. Jimmy Wopo was characterized as "the terror of the Hill District" and that the cops were looking at him for involvement in two recent murders.

Like I said in a prior post, this guy was keeping it real. An authentic G, living the life of which he rapped.

And that's a good thing why??? We shouldn't be idolizing murderers.

Oh I was not idolizing him. Just noting that indeed he was the real deal. Lived the life. Of course he reaped the rewards of that life. Not some wannabe from the 'burbs wearing a backwards ball cap, rapping about "busting a cap in yo' ass" but a real G... with all that implies. Street violence, drug busts, the full Monty. Maybe even murder, we'll see what the PPD comes up with.

Of course now the Department of Public Assistance will now have to pay for the upbringing of his two children plus the other one that is on the way. All part of the game.

I knew this kid named Max who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late he liked to get s***-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some s***, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way at least that's what they say when you play the game

Can I just say I've never heard about this guy before, a guy who, from what I'm reading, beat a pregnant woman, took part in armed home invasions, and assaulted fans doesn't really seem, from any perspective, a model for today's youth. I don't really truck with woman beaters.

Watch this video before you go assume he's just some rapper who's a women beater and that' it.

Indeed. Sure he had some peccadilloes, but he was an inspirational figure.

Kinda like Tupac who had rape and drug dealing going on, as well as an incident where he was playing with guns and a 6 year old was killed, but is so inspirational! This is what some people look for when searching for inspiration.

XXX coulda been the next Tupac.
