People complain about lack of diversity in form factor nowadays but the truth of the matter is that a lot of these phones were trash even back then lol.

I never thought they were trash. They always looked and felt cool to me. Wouldn't mind getting these designs back (the slider phones).

I never really liked the hybrid smart/dumb phones that a lot of people had in the late 2000s going into 2010.  I had a Sony Ericsson slider phone in 2008 and it sucked so bad I just gave up and got an iPhone, which I've stuck with ever since.

Compared to the flagship phones they were quite a heavy downgrade :P

I remember people owning these phones and being frustrated by them and looking longingly at my Galaxies ;D

Phones looked way cooler back then. Now they look ugly with that big notch at the top.

Yeah, before I got an Iphone/Android I was still using Nokia phones until about 2011/early 2012-ish.

Lol at least there was variety back then, now it's all samsung and Apple. Andriod had some ugly phones, but there were a lot of great designs from Android that gets overlooked because there aren't marketed heavy.

It's surprising how many different shapes and sizes we had to chose from back then in terms of Android. Now all Android phones are the same. iPhone was one size though.

They are better now. Budget and mid-range phones are actually good with decent specs now. Only thing that is much more terrible now is the price of the high end super phones like the Note, Pixel, IPhones X, etc. are over 1200 bucks now (Canadian dollars) and you can buy a gaming laptop for that price. The price on these phones is absolutely ridiculous. You just didn't see those prices back then.

They're better as tech but outside they all look the same generic shapes and mostly the same sizes. Back then we had some with a single button, 2, 3 buttons, no physical buttons and those with keyboards. Now I can no longer buy a no-frills smaller phone, they're all big now.

If the cheapest phone has good enough specs and is visually identical to the flagship why buy a flagship phone at all? It no longer makes sense, there are mid range phones that are capable enough for the fussiest consumer.

I bought one of the expensive flagships phone for the good portable camera + I intend on keeping this phone for 4-5 years. My Galaxy Note 4 lasted 4 years, if it were for the mmc_read failure it could have lasted a few more years.  :\'(

I mean, if you're going to have the same phone for 5 years, may as well get one that's top of the line :P

I try to upgrade every 3 years. That's usually when I notice the battery degrade. Speaking of that, I really miss when phones had removable batteries.

This was my first phone: https://www.fonearena.com/blog/397/nokia-6288-the-upgraded-6280.html
Nokia expect the 6288 will be available come this fall, and should retail for around 325 Euro (around US$400) before any applicable operator subsidies.

The prices are a little high but I don't think too high - some of those phones can use new hardware that still isn't so commonplace, like USB type C. My first phone was using a little used storage medium - only standard sized SDs for digital cameras and microSD survived, mine used miniSD. The price I quoted would be half of what you have mentioned assuming you're using current Canadian dollar values. The price of electronics can vary by location for political reasons.

Same here, but generally, once you do have time to upgrade, because of how Android and iOS dominate the mobile world for operating systems and how frequently they update and force you to update for security reasons and for certain features as well as for money, your phone becomes practically obsolete very quickly.
