Don't use it much but it is very pratcictal to keep in touch with some figures (from politicians to simply youtubers). Also you learn a lot of nice facts and there some very funny stuff on it. An account isn't absolutely neceressary but it's just more convenient :)

A reason for getting a Twitter account should come to you rather than you having to look for one.
I've had Twitter since 2008, and while it's changed a lot since then, I still use it to keep in touch with very intelligent people whose tweets I enjoy reading. :)

Basically the only reason I started a Twitter account was to get a discount on a computer game. That's it. I do sometimes tweet at my favorite game developers and musicians (who are indie and unknown enough that they actually respond back), but I don't use it for much else.
