Subject: Anglo culture is waning in Eastern Europe

Written By: Early10sFan on 09/01/18 at 6:57 pm

US movies are still big over here but lately ppl are avoiding listening to English-language music, especially after Brexit and the way UK press treats Eastern Europeans. Stations play less British and American stuff. Selena, Demi, Miley etc. Disney stars plus T. Swift, Gaga, Adele and Justin B. were huge here. Not anymore. No news about any of them or the current Disney stars anymore.

If a song is in English it's usually local/Continential or American. We had some UK TV series, not anymore and US shows are just fillers. The most watched are the Turkish TV soaps. ;D

I am not boycotting anything, I'm just not interested in post-2014 music from US/UK but also Balkan artists. I prefer LatAm and Spanish music now.

Maybe this fatigue with all things British & English is just an Eastern European thing. I'm learning Spanish, French and Dutch and I still see the British and US politicians on their websites. Kinda annoying as I want to escape from the political madness but I digress. ;D

Learn an East Asian language if you want to get away from Western politics imo :P

I'm in the UK right now and went to a city that voted 70% for Leave (Coventry) as a visible minority. I've got balls of steel.  8) Jk it's not like I'm going to a US Republican area where they have guns and methheads or whatever. :o

I find this a little concerning, especially considering recent news about Turkey. It seems like that there's a backlash against liberalism that's taking place in Eastern Europe.

Not only against liberalism but against anything Western really. Thinking is we have closer cultural ties to Turkey than to Western and Northern Europe . I  think it's not really true, ppl are just disappointed with the way they're treated in Western Europe. Polish and other more Northern Slavic people are also turning anti-West (but NOT pro-Russian).

I dislike that the East is getting more and more conservative with each passing year.

Then I don't imagine they'll be expecting any NATO help.

Well the West is also turning xenophobic towards their fellow (Eastern) Europeans. Unfortunately. There were some PEGIDA protests in Germany for ex. The articles on Daily Mail etc. are xenophobic/racist towards the East (depending on your definition). They don't dare attacking Muslims or Africans, despite not really liking them as well. No outcry because maybe most E.E. don't read British news and non-Balkan Slavic people are not very welcoming themselves (Czechs and Russians tend to be very unwelcoming and chilly, they make Germans look as extroverted and welcominng as Latinos). It's just that Eastern Euros are the UK's punching bags. ;D Of course the Daily Mail is far-righters' daily of choice, but it's frightening how Middle Britain accepts all the xenophobic propaganda.

BTW the UK was voted as one of the least expat-friendly countries, so it's no surprise. Of course no one beats the Portuguese and the Spanish in being welcoming in Europe. From Northern Europe, Ireland takes the crown. ;) I'd say Scotland might be actually friendlier than England, but the stats are for the UK in general. ::) Londoners are aloof and in my experience I found people on the streets in Paris nicer in general, despite the slightly worse service. I can vouch the Czech Republic is really that unwelcoming, but not all Slavs are the same. Balkan Slavs are relatively welcoming (no stats, but not much worse than the welcoming Greece and Romania). I think most of the unfriendly countries are with bad weather, but there are exceptions like Ireland and Canada having that, yet being welcoming.

Most and least expat-friendly countries as voted by expats: http://mb.cision.com/Public/11208/2476635/9833aaf16686f56d.pdf

I'm surprised the USA scored so low compared to Canadians. ;D Most US Americans I've met are nice if too loud and boisterous. Canadians are usually more mild, but elsewhere on US sites I've heard they're called reserved by US people. Colombians and Mexicans are indeed friendly.

Well there's this place in Saigon I heard of, where you can get anything you want. So 'Nam has its attractions.

Hey, how's Winnipeg for a living? It's supposedly one of the best places for me, along with those US areas: Duluth, Twin Cities, St Louis, all the way down to New Orleans (AstroClick Travel says so  ;D). But since Canada has better healthcare, less guns and better social security I'm no longer certain the US is good for me. Canada seems less focused on the rat race. I HAVE worked in 2 huge US-based corps. here in Europe and I felt like a slave worker. A huge open office layout where individuals were just work drones.  ;D

Any jobs in Winnipeg? I'm a Business/Communications graduate (US degree). I'm interested in art, singing/acting, graphic design and copywriting. My other option in Canada is Quebec but my French is not as good.

Haha just kidding. TBH, I don't know much about Winnipeg except that it's nickname is Winterpeg and it has some of the coldest winters in the country. It is the home of Canada's labour movement. Other than that, I've heard mostly racially tinged comments about the city and its crime/drug problem :-X But that's only one part of the city. The rest looks like a very affordable city with an urbane downtown environment, which is impossible to find in North America these days.

TBH, any city outside Toronto/Vancouver is going to have a laid back atmosphere. I grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, which is just one hour outside Toronto (although much longer during rush hour - so not many people work in Toronto) and it's really laid back. One of my friends described it best: when asked where you work, the Hamiltonian says "bartender" and leaves it at that, while the Torontonian says "bartender, but it's only temporary, I'm a third year chemical engineering student " ;D

I found this about Winnipeg's art scene. Sounds like a good match

Similarly, we have a thriving Arts community, with lots of musicians, artists, performers and writers. There is always something to do, or a group/club you can join.
