Subject: To Wake Up in 2013

Written By: Dundee on 09/05/18 at 4:36 am

Randomly fell on this old InThe00s thread: http://www.inthe00s.com/archive/inthe00s/smf/1141752806.shtml
The answers are pretty interesting so I'm asking the same question to y'all but this time what 5 years ago is in 2018.
Do you think if you were to wake up in 2013 for some reason, you would notice any minute differences you never noticed?

Also, I can't resist posting this looking at this thread's name ;D ;D

Its interesting because looking at that thread, for the most part people in 2006 didn't feel as though 2001 was that different but from a 2018 perspective they were quite clearly two different eras. So I wonder what differences people will find in the future between 2013 and now that we just don't realise yet...

2013 felt like a different world from a 2018 perspective. Donald Trump was just an old billionaire. Pop and Indie was dominating while non-trap rap was also dominating like Macklemore, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, etc. The One Direction craze was real in 2013. I remember in early 2013 that people in my school still used slide phones. Smartphones were more prevalent in late 2013. The politics felt more peaceful compared to now. The memes back then were more text-oriented than the "spicy" and "dank" memes we have today. If I were to wake up in 2013 and then dab in front of people, they would think I'm crazy.

I think i’d notice the lack of Twitter memes and abundance of rage comics and bad luck brian-esque memes :P.

2013 was weird it was not early 2010s and not yet mid 2010s

only in the later half of 2013 you would feel it being mid

In the early 10's (including 2013) cellphones were very small even a few of them with keyboard, that would be one of the things that I notice
You can see in a thread that I made

2013 was the year that set up the mid '10s.  In fact I would say 2013 and 2014 were the two most similar years this decade.  2013-16 were all very similar for that matter.  There was a sense of escalating tension that has culminated in where we are now.

Please refrain from posting about shifts and eras, this thread is about the differences between then and now.

Politically, 2013 had more in common with 2012 than it did with 2014.

2013 was the last year before SJWs, the Alt-right, legal recreational marijuana sales,  the rise of the "incel", and the rise of ISIS.

2013 was an ultra dark year for me, so I think I would notice I was in that year because I'd most likely wake up in the hospital  :-X

2013 was probably one of the first years I started hating the pop culture, especially much of the music and fashion. I simply started losing hope in life. Could have been earlier, but at least 2012 and before had some 2000s hangovers.

Because the Core 2010s were in full swing by 2013 ;D. I agree, I preferred the culture of the 'Electropop Era' from 2008/2009-2012 over the Core 'Hipster' Era of the 10s from 2013-2016/2017, any day of the week!

I hated 2013 pop culturally.

I thought that Vine and the whole twerking thing were idiotic. I was also never really a fan of Frozen.

Ehhh, 2013 wasn't that bad. It was very similar to 2004 in a way, in the sense that 2013 had a pretty decent balance between early 10s & mid 10s cultural influences. Also, I'd have to disagree with the last point, Frozenmania I've always associated moreso with 2014, than 2013, due to the film coming pretty late within the year & amassing massive cultural following for much of the 2013 Holiday Season & into much of the year of 2014. Heck, one could argue that Frozenmania lasted well into 2015, potentially even 2016 ;D. It was this generation's 'Lion King' essentially.

Even though 2017 was when Trump became president, I would still say that it was part of the core 2010's because Charlottesville was the culmination of the SJW vs. Alt-right drama of this decade.  Additionally, it was the last year before Generation Z really had an identity as a generation (tide pods, Parkland, XXXTentacion's death).

If I were to divide the core 2010's, it would be like this:

2013: Core 2010's pop culturally, but not really core 2010's politically.

2014-2016: The core years of this decade both pop culturally and politically.

2017: Core 2010's politically (Berkeley, Manchester, Portland train incident, Charlottesville), but probably not as core 2010's pop culturally as 2014-2016.

Please let me know your thoughts on my breakdown of the core 2010's.

2013 being somewhat like 2004 - I can see that. I can also see it being like 1983 or 1992 in a way, as those were the first core years of their respected decades.

Frozenmania lasting until 2016 - where I live, I still saw some little girls wearing Frozen dresses earlier this year.

I thought creating a thread about the differences between now and 5 years ago where people could contrasting the two years was a good idea, but I'm very disappointed to see how it quickly it turned into another goddamn "where the cultural mid-2010s start" discussion, as if there aren't a million threads like that going on right now.

This board is just getting very tiring to read at times in how extremely repetitive the discussions are getting and how the same subjects are mechanically respitted each time.

Thus I'm closing this.

2013 felt a lot brighter and cheery to me than now in general. I would notice a difference in music and fashion of course. Also I think 2013 is when YouTube forced us to use Google+. I delayed linking my account to GP for a while but I think this was the year you couldn't even comment on a video without GP.  ::)

That reminds me. I really though GP or some other SM platform would come and dethrone Facebook but that never really happened.

I'd say I'd notice a couple differences. Being a tech head myself, the first thing I'd notice is how different smartphones look. The screen would look super muddy on most phones and the bezels would be pretty huge. And it would perform much slower. Also skeuomorphism design (3D look) wasn't even fully dead in 2013, IOS 6 still had it and a couple other interfaces were still lingering on, so you could say 2013 was the last year skeuomorphism had any real presence. I'd also notice Windows 7 being everywhere on all computers, Windows 10 not existing. Also no 4K or even 2K TVs around very much, they existed but most TVs were still 1080p. Then I would notice hashtags being used everywhere on Facebook and other platforms. I'd notice all the indie songs, electropop songs, non-trap sounding rap songs. I'd notice Miley Cyrus sticking her tongue out everywhere and making naked music videos.  :P

I miss 2013.

Also cars in 2013 were nearly identical to today. However 2006 vs. 2001 was a huge jump.

Only slightly more future-looking, but pretty much the same.

2013 was not that much different
but it depends on what part you are talking about

Late 2013 had most of the mid 2010s in its infancy just about to break ground
