Subject: 2016: Mid or Late

Written By: mc98 on 10/03/18 at 7:48 am

I'm not sure if this is decadeology but I just want to know if you guys think what period 2016 belongs to. For me, 2016 is kinda both.

Mid even though it showed signs of what's to come in the late 10's (Donald Trump getting elected). 2016 is the peak of the culture that started in late 2013, and the late 10's culture didn't begin until late 2017.

Is Both

The mid 2010s culture peaked around the time Pokemon Go was a fad and faded when Donald got elected

I think early 2017 is when late 2010s culture started. 2017 as a whole felt more late than mid. Late 2016 is the bridge from the mid 2010s to the late 2010s.

Here's how I break out 2016 as a whole:

January - September 2016 = Mid 2010s
October - December 2016 = Late 2010s

I would push the bridge just a little later.  I would say probably August 2016 to August 2017 was the bridge and that era has qualities that fit both eras.  From August 2017 on 100% late.  2016 before August is still mid '10s.

It felt late the morning of the election we were in a new era lol

But if you wanna pin point the non beta  REAL start of the late 2010s then around the time  when TRL came back Late Aug/October ish.
Its not because of TRL it just so happened to come back around the time it felt we were in the late culture of the decade.

I would say when Cardi B released "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)" which was around that same time was when things felt 100% late '10s.  I agree though that the election was the real dividing point.  It just took about another 6-8 months or so for the mid '10s status quo to fade completely away.  One of the biggest songs of 2017 was "Something Just Like This" by the Chainsmokers, which I would say sounds a lot more mid '10s than late '10s.  Hipster culture was still pretty big when 2017 started.  It was noticeably in decline by the end of 2017.

Early 2017(January - April) was the time when I was sure the late 2010s has been established. At least 80%.

Donald Trump enters the White House
The death of Vine.
Bad and Boujee ushering the music world into the new era of Trap domination.
The Chainsmokers changing their sound into a softer form of EDM (Paris).
The release of Nintendo Switch.
Calvin Harris abandoned his Progressive House sound.
XXXTentacion entered the spotlight and gave more attention to Soundcloud.
XO Tour Llif3 marks the start of the emo rap trend.
Damn by Kendrick Lamar is the most trap flavored of his entire catalog.
The DIY Slime that took over Youtube for some reason.
Fidget Spinners becoming the next Rubix Cube.

Late 2016 did felt more late than mid and showed signs on what'll be popular in the late 2010s, but it wasn't established yet imo. Late 2016 was when the mid 2010s was on life support. Early 2017, the plug has been pulled for the mid 2010s. By mid 2017, it was the burial.

Late 2016 had a similar vibe as 1996, the End of that eras culture in a sense, The 2010s culture felt like they were kicking and screaming in 2017,  despite us being in a new era the day of the election, I am still going to say Fall 2017 would be a better spot to pin point when it started feeling different vs when it actually happened.

I pin point to mid 2017 when things started feeling different. 2017 as a whole felt very foreign from the rest of the 2010s.
